Kevin Feige Says Tony Doesn't Know Agent Coulson Is Still Alive In IRON MAN 3

For those hoping we'd get a clue to how Agent Coulson survived his apparent death at the hands of Loki in the first Marvel Studios film post-Avengers, you may be a bit disappointed.

When it was first announced that Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) would be returning for ABC's S.H.I.E.L.D. many assumed that it would be as a hologram, Life Model Decoy or that the show would take place before The Avengers. However, when ABC network president Paul Lee stated that the show would takes place after The Avengers there was a puzzling outcry from the Marvel fanbase. There's been small but growing chatter that Coulson might turn up in Iron Man 3 as a quick reestablishing of his character before the pilot aired. However, Feige has lowered the odds of that happening significantly with his response to a question during Marvel Iron Man 3 roundtable Q&A with various press outlets. Does he know that Phil Coulson is alive and on S.H.I.E.L.D., was the question put to Feige who responded, Does Tony know that? No. For those having fun cooking up theories about how Coulson returns, you probably shouldn't expect to get any answers in Iron Man 3.

And as a bonus, parting shot, Feige also praised The Runaways script from Iron Man 3 script writer Drew Pearce calling it "an amazing draft" but a project that Marvel has ultimately decided not to make.

For all the latest on ABC's S.H.I.E.L.D. stay tuned to CBM. I suspect we should be hearing news on the project sooner rather than later. Marvel's Iron Man 3 hits US theaters May 3rd.

jackdawak - 3/5/2013, 6:51 PM
WELL THAT EXPLAINS IT!!
HongKongPooey - 3/5/2013, 6:54 PM
what the hell?! Coulson is alive?!?!? When was this revealed?!?!?!
iZinDiaN - 3/5/2013, 6:54 PM
He's still alive? WTF. LOL.
LAXtremest - 3/5/2013, 6:54 PM
I hope Coulson is used in flashbacks or something.
TayDee - 3/5/2013, 6:58 PM
Well shit, I didn't even know
NoAssemblyReqd - 3/5/2013, 6:58 PM
The fact that Coulson is headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show has been known for months. That it takes place post-Avengers is a relatively new development, but it's still pretty old news.

I wonder if other countries will get the show (assuming it's picked up) at the same time it airs in the States, or if there will be a delay.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 3/5/2013, 6:59 PM
Why is he alive? The [frick]...
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 3/5/2013, 7:00 PM
how the [frick] is coulson still alive. this hack fiege forced whedon to kill him off and now wants him back. death is [frick]ing cheap has crossed over to mcu.
bazinga85 - 3/5/2013, 7:01 PM
They should've left him dead.
NoAssemblyReqd - 3/5/2013, 7:01 PM
Actually, it was Whedon (and his brother) who wanted Coulson back, which is an odd reversal of what usually happens when Joss is writing.
laughterman26 - 3/5/2013, 7:02 PM
coulson can never die, only be slowed down. HE IS THE CHUCK NORRIS OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE.

also im thinking that, coulson was a life model decoy in avengers, they make him like vision/ cyborg or that they give him some kind of super soilder serum, freeze him and then bring him back.some kind of shit like that.
antman8o8 - 3/5/2013, 7:02 PM
they are gonna use that L.M.D. card and run with it...happy to see Phil is back (wait why is he PHIL) but his death had meaning and needed to be done as was explained. still lol come on Marvel!!! at least he isn't Vision lol
2gold - 3/5/2013, 7:03 PM
Wow..Nick Fury is an epic prick then. Lied to the Avengers, lied to his own agents and now he'll expect them to trust him. Of course Tony knew he was a liar but Phil? That is going to ouch him.
PrinceVegeta - 3/5/2013, 7:04 PM
SPOILER ALERT

DarkKnight23 - 3/5/2013, 7:04 PM
So the avengers were brought together because of a lie?
TheRedSkull - 3/5/2013, 7:04 PM
I'm assuming in the Avengers 2, the group will realise that Coulson isn't dead and hence will cause more turmoil within the group.

It's a great idea, as long as it's handled well. As for the S.H.E.I.L.D show, they better work on how to make his return and fake death good enough. I have faith though
lapress - 3/5/2013, 7:05 PM
ah maN! NO rUNAWAYS?!
TheRedSkull - 3/5/2013, 7:06 PM
And there isn't really strong enough of a referrence in The Avengers to suggest how he survived...so yeah this show has got a lot of work to fill those cracks
TheRedSkull - 3/5/2013, 7:07 PM
@lapress...I know right?...
MarkJulian - 3/5/2013, 7:07 PM
Wow, did you guys really not know Agent Coulson was the lead in the S.H.I.E.L.D. show?

THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 3/5/2013, 7:09 PM
This is so so stupid. The only way to bring the Avengers together was to fake someones death? ughh leave him dead. Makes his death more meaningful.
CampBlood - 3/5/2013, 7:09 PM
clone ?
NoAssemblyReqd - 3/5/2013, 7:12 PM
The opening scene of S.H.I.E.L.D:

Yinsen and Dr. Erskine are having a beer in an odd, smoke-filled bar. In the corner with a box of bowling trophies is old Ben Parker.

In walks Agent Coulson, dazed and confused. The bartender puts down the glass he has been polishing and looks Coulson square in the eye.

"You don't belong here, son."
JDUKE25 - 3/5/2013, 7:12 PM
So Coulson is alive?

Bad enough we get this crap in comics....
CampBlood - 3/5/2013, 7:13 PM
maybe they have spare coulsons being fed a constants feed of the active bodies experiences thoughts and senses and as soon as the body dies another activates essentially giving coulson a form of immortality

kind of a better version of the venture bros set up
OrgasmicPotatoe - 3/5/2013, 7:14 PM
He is still alive because he never died. I think it's fairly simple, now all you guys have to do is wait for the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series to eplain that, so you can tell me.
JatevinM - 3/5/2013, 7:14 PM
The whole Coulson thing has been known for months
OrgasmicPotatoe - 3/5/2013, 7:15 PM
Though I wish he was kept dead. First time I got to know that character was in Thor, in which I thought he was a complete asshole and wanted to put a bullet in his brains the whole time. His and Rachel Dawe's death were the most satisfying (to me) in recent superhero movies.
DocDrop - 3/5/2013, 7:16 PM
All the pilot has to do is open with a scene of Coulson being rushed into emergency surgery where he barely survives & is in a coma, sequestered away for a few months while everyone thinks/thought he was dead, until he wakes up. BINGO! Problem solved...
Pheezmatic - 3/5/2013, 7:18 PM
U all have no imagination!...how can he stay dead if he was never dead to begin with!!??? stoopidys...
IronNuts2 - 3/5/2013, 7:19 PM
Or he was a Skrull spy and they get him back in avengers 2? or does that not jive with continuity?
smartell511 - 3/5/2013, 7:19 PM
Im sure the show will explain
OverlyManlyMan - 3/5/2013, 7:19 PM
Just leave him dead Marvel. I want to SEEEE TRAGEDY!!!!
RorMachine - 3/5/2013, 7:20 PM
No see that won';t work because

WE SAW HIM BREATH HIS LAST DAMN BREATH IN THE AVENGERS!

Cheyne stoking, expired, an ex agent, cold, staring eyes. He. was. DEAD.

So yes, bringing him back is mind numbingly stupid.
AmericanPsychoWolf - 3/5/2013, 7:21 PM
I can't wait to see the looks on the Avengers face when they realize that Coulson's alive.
smartell511 - 3/5/2013, 7:22 PM
Can an Infinity Gem resurrect the dead?? Maybe SHIELD has a gem of unknown origin that they found in Wakanda that can resurrect the dead. Just throwing out ideas lol.
AlexTheKaiser - 3/5/2013, 7:23 PM
@Noassembly

There WILL be a delay, there is always a delay
MarkJulian - 3/5/2013, 7:24 PM
Could you imagine if he just shows up on the show unexplained and the running gag is that we never find out how he survived?....
NoAssemblyReqd - 3/5/2013, 7:24 PM
Unless SHIELD becomes a runaway hit such that the fans demand it, I doubt Coulson will return to the film series. Fury would likely want to keep Coulson's survival a secret from the Avengers for as long as possible anyway.

If they ever do find out the truth, Fury will simply say the same thing he said to Hill, that "they needed the push." By then the Avengers will be a well-established team, so it's doubtful any major upheaval would occur as a result of the deception being revealed.
NoAssemblyReqd - 3/5/2013, 7:26 PM
@MarkJulian I'd suggested that on these talkbacks a while back! They could keep it a mystery for a season or two. It would definitely make for good water cooler talk.
SpectacularJoShFest - 3/5/2013, 7:27 PM
TONY DOESN'T KNOW!!! FUUCK, I DIDN'T KNOW!
I feel somehow spoilt. This makes me want to punch someone.

FightAs0ne - 3/5/2013, 7:28 PM
@Mark That sounds like something that Joss would do.
LucasMend - 3/5/2013, 7:30 PM
Marvel is so pussy. Let him die, he was the motivation they needed to stop loki after the helicarrier attack, now that doesn't matter anymore...
R888 - 3/5/2013, 7:30 PM
Yeah more mystery,so wait the avengers assemble cause of a lied. Tony is not going to be not happy about that.
CaptainObvious - 3/5/2013, 7:31 PM
Now it's just like a comic book. Where death has no purpose and can be easily undone.

The purpose of Coulson was to bridge all the Marvel films together. He served that purpose so leave him dead.
AmericanPsychoWolf - 3/5/2013, 7:32 PM
Oh my god, that baby punching scene! LMAO!
thefirstavenger97 - 3/5/2013, 7:34 PM
@Mark that would be hilarious and annoying. Lol
CaptainObvious - 3/5/2013, 7:38 PM
He is dead. He is a corpse. He is no more. He has expired. He has gone to meet his maker. He's pushing up daisies. He's six feet under. He's kicked the bucket. He's bought the farm. He got the axe. He rests in peace. He is long gone from this world. He has passed on.

Keep him dead, Marvel. Bringing him back is a dumb idea.
