Once upon a time there was belief that The Doctor could only regenerate twelve times thanks to a 1976 Doctor Who episode, "The Deadly Assassin" but that notion has quietly been discarded by the BBC. Nevertheless, number twelve will be an important step for the next run of Doctor Who episodes as the series reached some incredible high points with Matt Smith and attracted some big names to direct and write episodes. However, Smith had decided to depart the long-spanning franchise at the end of this year much to the dismay of fans around the world. Now, debate is running rampant about who should fill his shoes. Take the poll below and voice your opinion about who should be his replacement? Should the series stay young or should The Doctor be old again? Or perhaps a woman?

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH!

Why is Rupert Grint on the list but not Daniel Radcliffe? Either way my choice would be Ben Whishaw as Benedict Cumberbatch has become too well known for him to do the Doctor (not to mention the fact that he's already Sherlock Holmes and Khan).

I think it would be very unlikely for Benedict Cumberbatch to be playing The Doctor at this point. He has lots of projects. So... Imma choose between Rupert Grint or Alan Cumming, both would be extremely intresting. I see Alan Cumming going on the David Tennant route because they both look a like.

I agree, cumberbatch is way to popular. My money's on an unknown.

Grint is only somewhat viable choice on that list and I think even that's pushing it. I mean, Helen Mirren? Seriously? I won't even dignify that suggestion with all the reasons it's ridiculous. I'm just hoping it was meant as a joke then all is forgiven. :-)

-Alan Cumming, Benedict Cumberbatch, Idris Elba and Sacha Baron Cohen will all never happen either!!!

My choice, Jamie Murray (Dexter, Spartacus, Warehouse 13, Defiance) :

who cares it will just be be another white anglo-saxon male. Dear god that the doctor would be brown, female, or not even human looking.

I chose Alan Cumming, I'd rather not have someone who's already busy and forcibly loved by the fan community or people that got a role because they look young.

I think Alan Cumming is the best mixture between an older man with a young spirit.

That said, none of these - get another unknown.

@The Sisko

The fact thet Timelords look human and you want them after fifty years just change that. I thinkthat would turn off fans faster than anything.

I would love to see James McAvoy as the Doctor. Other than that I really don't know who I want to play him.

john hurt is my guess at this point. Jaime Murray as the 12th Doctor would be a dream come true, but highly doubtful as whoever does the casting on Dr Who will insist on another white male.

Rupert Grint is your best option here. Cummings would be cool.:
But it will be an unknown. Also, if the doctor can regenerate 12 times and this is the 12th doctor then this is only his 11th time to regenerate. Because the first is the first, the regeneration didn't start until the second one

@SWelch I want the writers to give us the unexpected. So us something different with next doctor. Whether that means a truely alien doctor i do not know.

Eddie Izzard or Philip Glenister as the doctor!

Benedict won't do Doctor Who. He is too busy with movies. Even Sherlock got postponed cause of busy schedule.
Ben Shaw looks apt for the role. He was cool in skyfall.

@SuperDude001 i just watch the show occasionally I do not read theories or speculations, much. I know the doctor can not cross his own time stream. But given that the doctor travels all over time it is not impossible to believe the doctors secret is that he knows about one of his future regenerations, possible his final one.

The 12 regeneration limit is a thing of the past so we don't have to worry about that.

I want some one like Matt Smith a completely unknown actor (well at least to me) And all the actors in the poll don't fall in to the category. Especially Sherlock Khan and Stringer Heimdall Pentecost Mumbles Mandela Bell. Great actors but too goddamn known.

It's gonna be an unknown or someone who's not "big", the BBC are a bunch of cheap mother[frick]ers, they wont get someone who could have potential schedule conflicts, especially if they're doing other movies and projects, they'll want and go for someone's who committed. Just hope the series goes back to the tone it was under Russell T Davies, haven't been able to get back into it since Tennant left back in 2010.

Bill Nighy would be an excellent change of pace.

dafuq, They'll cast some unknown person, they'll would never cast an Idris Elba. Lmao, this article is a spoof. But Rupert Grint is the less comedic choice here.

All those choices are dumb, also the doctor will never be a woman.

How about Ben Daniels, the guy that has been seen hanging around the Who set a ton and is all but confirmed to be the guy.
