Joe Johnston Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving Talk Captain America, Red Skull , HYDRA and The Cosmic Cube!

Joe Johnston,Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving talk about Captain America The Red Skull, HYDRA and what sounds like it could be The Cosmic Cube!

Joe Johnston Hugo Weaving and Chris Evans sat down with EW.com for a video interview. Unfortunately, I am unable to embed the video for you to view. What I have done instead, is transcribe portions of the interview. I left out the questions and answers from Johnston and Evans that we have all heard over and over.

This from EW.com...

You guys are just beginning to shoot this movie. Correct?

Johnston:
Correct.

EW: How far along are you into it?

Johnston, Evans and Weaving:
(In Harmony) Two weeks.

EW: What has it been like to play Captain America?

Evans:
It's been fantastic. It's a little, you know it's intimidating. You know, coming to the set and seeing the magnitude of everything and remembering who you're working with, the caliber of the director and actors that you have around you, it's, it can be daunting at times. But I'm trying to just look at it as another job.

EW: You're playing sort of the embodiment of all that is great about the country.

Evans:
Sure.

Weaving:(talking to Evans and smiling)We don't want to pressure you or anything.

EW: And your playing Red Skull.

Weaving:
Johann Shmidt is an ex SS officer who has his own branch of the German Army under his command. He's a scientist who is interested in developing armaments and also developing and harnessing the power of a, of a, sort of unusual energy source which has spiritual connections.

Johnston: And whats the name of his branch?

Weaving:HYDRA.

Johnston:HYDRA.

Hawksblueyes: This sounds interesting. Was Weaving refering to The Cosmic Cube before mentioning HYDRA?

Christ, they're putting a lot of stuff into this movie. I hope it works.
InTylerWeTrust - 7/26/2010, 3:07 PM
Im with Tyler, I hope they dont overdue it like they did Spiderman 3
Bronson - 7/26/2010, 3:08 PM
Maybe instead of the cosmic cube they work in the Infinity Gauntlet that we saw a few days ago as the power source.
WakeUp - 7/26/2010, 3:11 PM
@Tyler

Right!?!?! I hope this S.O.B. is 3hrs long!!!!
Talontd - 7/26/2010, 3:11 PM
YES!
zoo - 7/26/2010, 3:13 PM
WakeUp: With The Red Skull it will be the Cube. He has been obsessed with it forever.

Talontd: I don't think Marvel is worried about keeping the films a certain length. TIH and Iron man were both fairly long movies.
Hawksblueyes - 7/26/2010, 3:13 PM
Very nice ... Yet another movie we are all waiting for ... :)

Tyler- Wakeup- Talentd - They could just be hinting at things in the movie so when they make the avengers it all comes together ... High hopes my friends ... High hopes
thegreek - 7/26/2010, 3:13 PM
Hugo weaving is awesome in my book:

Starsapphire - 7/26/2010, 3:16 PM
Awesome find HAWKS! :)

As TYLER said, I really hope that they dont put too much into this movie and screw it up - this is our only chance to see Cap in WWII and it's him who should be the focus. I'm even more concerned that they'll just send Cap off to fight the Red Skull and that'll be his first and final mission...once the army let him out of the whole USO thing, they need to skip ahead a few years to show us that he's a battle hardened soldier. Not a one hit wonder! :P
JoshW - 7/26/2010, 3:16 PM
Changed my name recently, so i'm not a newbie! I'm loving these new developments in cap, and i'm more fixated on teh red skull character! is gona be frickin fascinating how he's gonna look :)
Shocker - 7/26/2010, 3:16 PM
I was at the hall H panel in person during the whole Marvel thing and might I just say FREAKING AMAZING! I'm a DC Green lantern fan all the way but I have a feeling from what I saw of that they're butchering my favorite superhero. Anyways I will confirm that the cube is in the film, we saw a clip from the movie of Hugo (Red Skull) finding the cube. It was great!

Ace0477 - 7/26/2010, 3:16 PM
Thats a lot of stuff.
ToughGrappler - 7/26/2010, 3:18 PM
Don't [frick] up THE INVADERS JOE!

Personally I reckon HYDRA is perfect for present day CAP in CAPTAIN AMERICA II???

Shocker @ What was your name b4 lol?

Ace0477 @ Very cool! :)

JOSH @ Thats what I think too, they gotta pack a good few years in the WWII stuff in this movie!
LEEE777 - 7/26/2010, 3:19 PM
HAIL HYDRA!!

And FVCK YES to the Cosmic Cube!!!

Josh: Thanks bud. I don't think over crowding is going to be a problem in this movie.

necrosage: What are your tutoring rates? That is what you're getting at isn't it? ;}
Hawksblueyes - 7/26/2010, 3:27 PM
Chris Evans is a perfect fit for Cap. I'm really glad he was cast :)

I find it funny though - that when asked "What has it been like to play Captain America?", Evans' response is 'Fantastic.' :D

I'm so excited for this - I can't wait to see the footage.
Joker08 - 7/26/2010, 3:29 PM
more news on Howling comandos please
HULK2099 - 7/26/2010, 3:31 PM
Nicely done, tthey are actually taking pieces from what happened on the comics, and making a cool adaptation, looks very good so far!!

=)
JLAvenger23 - 7/26/2010, 3:33 PM
Why the [frick] is the human goddamn torch playing Captain America? This is the worst thing since Ben Affleck playing Daredevil. Re-[frick]ing-cast.
comicbookfan12345 - 7/26/2010, 3:35 PM
@necrosage: I have a favor to ask you. Start cracking down on everyone who says 'casted' instead of 'cast' when referring to the past-tense of 'cast". So many people here say it... And it drives me mad.
Joker08 - 7/26/2010, 3:36 PM
@Joker08, Haha! I didn't notice that he said fantastic!
BIGBMH - 7/26/2010, 3:41 PM
Actually I also saw Evans in full costume atleast the WW2 costume. And it looks pretty epic, they have done a great job so far with what they've got. Also Red Skull oes have a nice little band of minions :) In Nazi uniforms of course.
Ace0477 - 7/26/2010, 3:43 PM

Wait in the comics did Red Skull have anything to do with HYDRA? just wondering.

GUNSMITH - 7/26/2010, 3:51 PM
Cool. I can't wait to see the first images of the film. This is huge a huge endeavor for them. Not only do we have Cap and Red skull but also the Invaders and Howling Commandos plus the connection to THOR and the eventually set-up for Avengers
Aki87 - 7/26/2010, 3:52 PM
Seriously, "your" does not equal "you're."
blinkuldhc - 7/26/2010, 3:53 PM
Unrelated topic..When in the Hell are they going to take down that damn Scott Pilgrim trailer!!F*CKING ANNOYING!!!
Intruder . - 7/26/2010, 4:01 PM
Wow their talking about HYDRA being in the film, the invaders are in the film, plus the cosmic cube! This film has the makings to be legendary.

Im surprised how far filmmakers are willing to go these days to making a great CBM film. I mean we have elements in this film that i thought i would not see for at least a decade, things like the cosmic cube or the invaders. Plus we got a pic of the infinity gauntlet that Thanos uses a little while ago...

I mean WOW! if this is indeed in the Avengers or even Thor i will be for 1) Happy as shit that its made it to the big screen and 2) Surprised that its made it to the big screen.

I say i am surprised in all honesty i never thought something like this or the cosmic cube would make it to hollywood because not alot of people outside of comic book fans really know what that is or really figure its that important.

In all honesty im doubtful that we'll get doomsday in a superman movie in the next 7 years or Darkseid in a film or another crack at a real Galactus (not a [frick]ing nimbus cloud) or even an Apocalypse in an xmen movie or something.

Those are thing that i just dont see happening, not because they might not translate well into film, but because its just something i thought i would never see...

But thats what i said about the cosmic cube not appearing in this film, or Hydra or even Namor (which apparently he is in the film according to Joe Johnston)

I like where this film's heading and im dying to see some footage :)
chris915 - 7/26/2010, 4:02 PM
@Joey Misfit...he helped establish it during WWII but that was one of Marvels earliest Retcons....so its good to see them keeping true to the current continuity.
Aki87 - 7/26/2010, 4:05 PM
Cosmic cube for captian america. Infinity gauntlet for avengers???
Morgatron - 7/26/2010, 4:08 PM
@BIGBMH: ;)

@ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN THE CAP FOOTAGE: Does the Red Skull look convincing? I was hoping for a CGI face due to an overwhelming fear of having to relive this again...

Ultimately, I had my fingers-crossed for something like this - which I couldn't imagine them doing without the aid of computer effects...

Joker08 - 7/26/2010, 4:09 PM
Joey Misfit@ From Marvel.com :

" The man most responsible for the creation of Hydra was Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, the Prussian aristocrat who served as wing commander of Nazi Germany’s infamous Death’s Head Squadron, and later as leader of its Blitzkrieg Squad of commandos. Infuriated by Strucker’s defeats by American commando Sgt. Nicholas Fury, and by Strucker’s refusal to execute the entire population of a French village, Adolf Hitler ordered the Gestapo to find and assassinate him. Strucker escaped Germany with the help of some of its men, and more importantly, with that of the Third Reich’s second most powerful leader, the Red Skull. The Skull eventually intended to challenge Hitler himself, and assigned Strucker to build a power base for him in the Far East. The embittered Strucker had no intention of serving anyone but himself, however, and severed ties with the Skull on becoming the Supreme Hydra. "
InSpace - 7/26/2010, 4:09 PM
Come on Johnston do this character and film real justice. You do great with WWII films and pulp action. This character goes hand in hand. I can't wait to see this film, I want to see all the sweet images and trailers NOW!!! lol...Of all the characters I'm curious about Red Skull AND Namor...these are two important characters and they deserve the most attention to detail.
Aki87 - 7/26/2010, 4:10 PM
blinkuldhc: If you're refering to the fact that "your" has not been corrected in the article, it may benefit you to know that I am unable to edit an article once it has been moved to the main page.

It may also benefit you to know that I was aware of the difference between the two words before it was originaly pointed out to me by necrosage. I simply missed it proofreading the article.

It has been noted. I can't change it. Now get off my ass about it. ;}
Hawksblueyes - 7/26/2010, 4:12 PM
Joker08@ i put that 2nd pic up before haha u got it from me lol. its actually a full body pic. but i do want red skull to look like that :)
Shocker - 7/26/2010, 4:19 PM
Hey hawk'sblueyes: You're article is pretty cool
LMAO
Juggernaut - 7/26/2010, 4:23 PM
Actually sorry to bum you guys out but in the footage he hadn't actually become the Red Skull yet. So I'm guessing it might have something to do with the Cosmic Cube because the monk told the Red Skull that no human eyes could be set on it. And as the monk said that Red Skull in human un transformed or scared form was mezmorized by the cube and the footage ended.
Ace0477 - 7/26/2010, 4:24 PM
@InSpace thanks for clearing that up.
Joey Misfit - 7/26/2010, 4:24 PM
LMAO! Thanks J'u'g'g's! ;D
Hawksblueyes - 7/26/2010, 4:25 PM
@Shocker: I found it on Google Images - from CBM, I just didn't pay attention to anything else :) I'm dying to know how he's gonna look now that we've learned so much about Cap's appearance - and now so many have seen him... I'd kill for him to look like that pic. I'm just not getting my hopes up, considering it's gonna be a prosthetic mask.

But I know someone here know'!
Joker08 - 7/26/2010, 4:25 PM
WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Cosmic Cube!!! HYDRA!!!!! THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO BE EPIC!!!! :D
UnfriendlySpidey - 7/26/2010, 4:27 PM
@Ace: So they only showed Hugo then? Just his normal face?
Joker08 - 7/26/2010, 4:27 PM

Juggernaut - 7/26/2010, 4:29 PM
Yeah just Hugo's normal face, I wish they had shown him as the Red Skull but you got to understand they aren't even at the CGI stage yet. Who knows maybe he was supposed to be the Red Skull in that scene and they just hadn't done the CGI yet. I don't remember if the monk said "Red Skull" or "He's here!"?
Ace0477 - 7/26/2010, 4:31 PM
HYDRA!!! AWESOME! I also can't wait to see Zemo and Arnim Zola! Plus HYDRA is something they can continue into the modern day for a Cap sequel.

Give me this Zemo or give me death:

MarsAmbassador - 7/26/2010, 4:33 PM
what doesn't make sense is that this movie is just starting to film is coming out 2 months after Thor. They should have been working on this the same time Thor was filming!!!
Avalanche731 - 7/26/2010, 4:34 PM
Juggernaut: That is priceless.

Avalanche: I've had a difficult time pondering that one myself.

Hawksblueyes - 7/26/2010, 4:38 PM
@Ace: In an interview with G4 during Comic-Con - Weaving said that his face wouldn't be CGI - it'd be a prosthetic mask made up of several pieces. So I'm guessing it was final. Thank you for the info by the way :)
Joker08 - 7/26/2010, 4:42 PM
The trailer was freaking awesome! It's scary at the same time too because it was nothing but Red Skull. This does not bode well for Chris Evans. Hugo Weaving is going to steal the show
Avalanche731 - 7/26/2010, 4:43 PM
@Joker08 Actually they did mention that, however his face was regular in this scene, so maybe it was just a regular scene before he had the Red Skull damage done to him.
Ace0477 - 7/26/2010, 4:45 PM
On another note I also saw the footage for THOR and it looks awesome too. Also I saw the entire cast for the Avengers movie for the first time together, and I must say they made some great choices minus the dropping of edward Nortan as HULK. They're going to confuse people. As for Norton he's an excellent actor, however and this is from an inside source from marvel. Aparently he is extremely difficult to work with, he likes to have control of everything. That's why the Incredible Hulk script got so re-written by him and that's why they wouldn't give him credit for it. They just needed someone that would be a team player otherwise the Avengers movie would crumble, and fail miserably.
Ace0477 - 7/26/2010, 4:52 PM
@Avalanche/Hawks: A few possible reasons why there's so much difference between the shooting start dates compared to release dates -

1. Shorter shooting times (Thor was quite a long shoot - Cap may not be)

2. Set construction - Cap may be using more real world locations, so less set construction, design, dressing and logistics are involved.

3. Post production - Thor will probably be using a lot of CGI - Cap less so.

Things like this are all extremely planned out in minute detail, so whatever the schedule is, it's been thought about. Of course, unforeseen delays can blow any plan to cock, but otherwise they must be confident that it's enough.
KeithM - 7/26/2010, 4:52 PM
@Ace - I'm sure you're correct :) I just meant I was pretty sure, based on said interview, that they weren't gonna CG his face :) Thanks again for answering my questions :) & Also - I've had that exact hunch about the Norton thing all along. I'm gonna miss him, but reviewing all we know, the difficulties sound like they were coming in on his end...
Joker08 - 7/26/2010, 4:55 PM
damn...this sounds wicked cool
Anil Rickly - 7/26/2010, 4:59 PM
@Joker08 Anytime, I think from what I have seen this movie is going to be awesome. I don't know if you all saw the line up of Actors, Actresses/Directors in Hall H at comic con on Saturday, but Damn. They must have had a nice reunion party for these guys. Considering the fact that most of them have worked together on something at one point, like Hugo and Natalie. If you get a chance look at the line up, another was Daniel Craig and Martin Campbell. By the way it was an honor to be in the First Appearence ever of Harrison Ford panel. Good Times...
Ace0477 - 7/26/2010, 5:00 PM
KeithM: All of your points are good ones. The CGI is probably huge for Thor.
Hawksblueyes - 7/26/2010, 5:02 PM
God...i hav such a bad feeling about what evans is gonna look like in that cap outfit.....that pointy nose and buck teeth jus dosnt scream Captain America 2 me....
XmutantX - 7/26/2010, 5:06 PM
As far as Captain America my inside source explained the idea to me a little. Before Cap becomes a super soldier he was this string bean kind of man that was just looking for something do with with his life. So what they did was they cast someone small and as the film progresses he will become Captain America. As far as the costume goes my source confirmed that there will be more than one of our favorite Cap suit's and sheilds in the film. So don't get too discouraged just yet, there's plenty of room for hope.
Ace0477 - 7/26/2010, 5:09 PM
However I will have to say and with all due respect, I hope that they trust Joe Johnston with the Cap. franchise considering the fact that all he's done is little pansy movies. :(
Ace0477 - 7/26/2010, 5:29 PM
necrosage: Well, evidently you got over being so agitated with the situation, because you're back and you continued reading.
Hawksblueyes - 7/26/2010, 5:35 PM
yes to the cosmic cube! this might not turn out bad... but i'm still waiting 4 the trailer... oh u lucky guys at comic con!
otherside - 7/26/2010, 5:45 PM
Sounds great. I love the fact that he's the one who is starting Hydra. Perhaps they'll show up in "The Avengers"
JJMeylar - 7/26/2010, 6:17 PM
Ace0477 What do you mean "don't get too discouraged just yet"? lol

Are you kidding? EVERY bit of news we've heard is completely positive - beyond our wildest dreams! (and I should know, I've been dreaming about it for 40 odd years!)
KeithM - 7/26/2010, 6:17 PM
The Begining of it ALL !!

gunner - 7/26/2010, 6:40 PM
rofl@ these people complaining about noses and teeth now. jesus christ. last night i came on here and i actually saw you fools complaining about the infinity gauntlet and which hand its on.. it never ends with u people. comedy at its best.
z3ro - 7/26/2010, 7:19 PM
I REALLY HOPE this movie explains everything clearly so the audience wont complain about what the hell the cosmic cube is or what Hydra is
MikeHawk - 7/26/2010, 8:03 PM
First, I want to make clear that this has no connection with the movie. I googled Red Skull makeup and this artist had it up on his page. It looks kind of like what a good Red Skull makeup job should look like.

http://compositeeffects.com/blog/images/
BIGBMH - 7/26/2010, 8:53 PM
@necro: The 'you're/your' thing doesnt bother me so much - I mean, I know the difference. I'm sure Hawks does too. I don't even pronounce them the same way - but I'm sure even I've screwed that up due to fast typing at some point... So I usually tend to overlook it... But 'casted' is just stupid. There's no excuse for saying that... That's really the only thing that upsets me grammatically. But why am I even talking about this? :)

@Ace: I'm sure you will never forget these past few days. I would have killed to have been there - seriously, as far as comicbook movie news goes, these have been the best few days in ages :) You got to see the freaking Avengers 'assemble' before your eyes :D
Joker08 - 7/26/2010, 11:11 PM
What an amazing SDCC!
The best I've ever seen!
Wish I could have been there
but I was too busy!

We need to give each other
breaks on our grammar here
in the comments but it's very
imperative to use proper English
and grammar in the articles!

It sounded like Weaving was
talking about the Cosmic Cube
for sure!

HYDRA logo from the EW video:

Internapse - 7/27/2010, 3:31 AM
There is going to be a TON of stuff in this movie!

Invaders, Howling Commandos, Hydra, the Cosmic Cube, Arnim Zola, Zemo (right?). I hope the don't clog up the story.

Didn't AIM make the cosmic cube in the comics? Also, if Red Skull gets his hands on the cosmic cube right off the bat it CAN'T be as powerful as it is in the comics. Maybe he has to learn how to use it? Or maybe they're changing it so that you have to have some machinery to use it, rather than just holding it in your hand and turning all your enemies to dust with a thought?
MassExecutions - 7/27/2010, 6:17 AM
The Red Skull is NOT A SCIENTIST. HE IS A USER. If someone like Zola showed him to mix two chemicals together to kill someone, the Skull will do so, and he'll remember it and use it again. He'll command scentists to make him a cosmic cube, then he'll kill them. No need to explain that he's a scientist, just someone Hitler picked to terrorize Europe and America.
HugeCapfan - 7/27/2010, 7:13 AM
Yeah, but Skull probably thinks of himself as a "scientist".
MassExecutions - 7/27/2010, 9:18 AM
yes HYDRA!!!

Lucaxmen - 7/27/2010, 9:34 AM
Cool. This movie is going to be awesome!
