Location: End of the Universe What: Severed Head of a Celestial Purpose: Base for the Guardians of the Galaxy. Has become a place to observe the End of the universe. Crossroads for countless aliens traveling the cosmos. Strategic Purpose: The Cortex Stem, the nervous system of the Celestial can provide travel to anywhere in anytime throughout the universe. The Cortex Stem also connects Knowhere to other Celestials, anywhere in time and space through quantum telepathy. Amenities: Living Quarters, Bar (Starlings), Med Bay, and Observatory The Knowhere is (actually) as stated before, in previous articles, a massive severed head in space. The being that it used to be was roughly 2,000 feet in height. This being was part of a race known only as the Celestials.

Celestials have been part of the earliest most nascent of human origins; first arriving on earth over a million years ago. Manipulating the human genetic code to bring forth two groups of peoples out of what existed from those early humans; The Eternals, and the Deviants. What's important to note is simply that Thanos himself is an Eternal, essentially sharing partial DNA as a descendant of early human evolution. The Celestials played a hand in the creation and seeding of other races as well. From the Skrulls to the Kree (although for the Kree, this is hinted and not completely proven). The Celestials have come to earth on three other occasions. The 2nd time was a huge jump from their first visit, 25,000 years ago. When they surveyed the fruits of their labor, they ended up destroying a contingent of the deviants they had created. The fabled sinking of Atlantis occurred as a result of the destruction waged by the Celestials. The Third time the Celestials came to earth was 1,000 years ago, and that time, the arrival was planned and arranged by other Eternals. The celestial hosts were met by Odin and Zeus who challenged their authority and right to interfere with mans affairs. This is what led to these factions declaring a neutrality toward earth; to no longer intervene or interfere in their affairs. The 4th and most recent return of the Celestials was to judge mankind, now that the mutant gene has awakened; The human race being the only race to ever pass the Celestials judgment were spared destruction. 12 humans left with this contingent of Celestials after their visit. Arishem, the Judge, was the Celestial that presented himself, and the leader of this contingent was only known as The One Above All who remained in their mothership in orbit.

Knowhere arriving to his present end is a mystery. The only possible conclusion that might shed some light is that the Celestials banded together to kill one of their own during the third host visit to earth. The rest of their knowledge in existence has been that of judgment to other worlds. If we breakdown a lot of Marvel's pantheon's we'll arrive to origins that begin with characters derived from Celestial manipulation, on a variety of levels, or from indirect scenarios. An example would be the Kree eventually performing experiments on early humans themselves arriving at genetically enhanced Inhumans. The very nature of the mutant gene existing in humanity starts from the Celestials earliest arrival. This rabbit hole isn't deep enough, let's dig in a bit deeper.

The Knowhere is run and maintained by a sentient talking dog, named Cosmo. Who was originally a test animal sent into space in the 60's by the Russians. Eventually breaking away and drifting into space until eventually reaching Knowhere. Mutating in space, gaining a variety of abilities, from a high level of intelligence (for a dog), to telepathic and telekinetic powers. Cosmo is a highly irregular character that also aids in guiding the Guardians, and later, the Annihilators, on many of their missions. After the GOTG story arc ended with Volume 2 issue #25, during the opening of the series arc of "The Thanos Imperative", the newly named group the Annihilators continued to use Knowhere as their base of operations. The Knowhere will be an amazingly interesting and difficult aspect to bring to life in the guardians film. I'm curious to see if it will be utilized, mentioned, or completely ignored as (potentially) "not-yet-being-arrived-to" in the film. The first appearance of this location is within the GOTG Guide to NOOBS! reading list, found in the Annihilation Conquest: Nova series. If you seek more indepth background on the mysterious Celestials and the roles they've played throughout Marvel history start with Eternals #1, however, the Celestials appear in Eternals issue #2. Funny enough, I just gave a near 9.0 set of issues #2-3 of Eternals to one of my colleagues, Charles Rouse-Rodriguez, just two weeks ago. Much to his fanboy glee; thinking I had extras, but I'll have to find another #3 to complete my collection again.
