When news broke that Patty Jenkins was off Thor 2, the obvious big question was who is going to take over for her. Marvel had narrowed their search down to two directors in Daniel Minahan and Alan Taylor. Now today, according to Deadline, Marvel have settled on Alan Taylor to helm Thor's next solo motion picture journey. Taylor's credits include Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and Nurse Jackie.

From Deadline:

Marvel Studios has found its Thor 2 director. I’m told that Marvel has set Alan Taylor, who was widely rumored to be on the short list to replace Patty Jenkins. Jenkins got the job but then fell out over differences with Marvel on the sequel.

Taylor joins returning scribe Don Payne, who will again return to write Thor's tale, along with stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Tom Hiddleston. Thor 2 will be released on November 15, 2013.

Well he did direct great episodes of three awesome shows. Still a big gamble, but I am willing to see if can handle the jump to the big screen.
nailbiter111 - 12/24/2011, 11:36 AM
cheap and uninspired choice, congrats marvel on saving money.
Viltrumite - 12/24/2011, 11:38 AM
Truthfully, I'm extremely worried about this film. Everything I've heard about Iron Man 3 so far has filled me with confidence. This...not so much.
6of13 - 12/24/2011, 11:43 AM
New Avengers trailer!

And I think the next project for Marvel should be The Black Panther.

Just because this guy has not directed a big action movie doesn't mean he can't do a good job for the Thor sequel.
WolvieCBM - 12/24/2011, 11:43 AM
Cheap? Maybe. Uninspired? Definitely not. He directed one of the best LOST episodes ever, worked on MAD MEN, BOARDWALK EMPIRE, GAME OF THRONES, THE SOPRANOS and much more. I say, bring it!
PantherX - 12/24/2011, 11:45 AM
Cool, I wonder how long this chump will last for.
bleedthefreak - 12/24/2011, 11:46 AM
Shane Black worries me more than this guy, and I love Shane Black.
superotherside - 12/24/2011, 11:47 AM
Interesting choice. Looking forward to how he takes the franchise. :)

I'm with Viltrumite on this one.

On the other hand Merry Christmas to all you CBMers and a happy new year!

What a hell of a year it'll be though!
bleedthefreak - 12/24/2011, 11:52 AM
lmao, its a Christmas miracle @superotherside.

Frankly, I'm more worried about the Don Payne part of this announcement than the Alan Taylor part.

Don't care who directs Thor 2, once it turns out a descent flick in the end thats all that matters.
sKeemAn - 12/24/2011, 12:17 PM
He is a pawn in the bigger scheme of Marvel.....Plus he's cheap
aRandomSinisterClone - 12/24/2011, 12:21 PM
Hope he does a good job. He never directed a movie before, he only ever did tv. Thorns one of the best CBM ever,I want Thor 2 to top it.
INSTANTJUSTICE - 12/24/2011, 12:22 PM
I hope this makes Natalie Portman happy, If not, f- u- c- k- her.

Thor. Damn autocorrect.
ManOfKrypton - 12/24/2011, 12:26 PM
I love Game of Thrones... So this could be a good thing, I shall reserve judgment for now... I think this is a much better choice then Patty Jenkins!
Linta - 12/24/2011, 12:28 PM
He directed two critical acclaimed episodes on Game of Thrones season 1.................good choice Marvel

Marvel Taps Alan Taylor To Helm THOR 2

Taps as in tapped that ass for a few bucks?

It's official; MARVEL will keeps it's film at medium level with no desire to go big and/or epic.

Maybe it's not completely their fault. The big Directors, writers and some actors may be snobbish when it comes to CBMs and don't want to partake. I don't know. But they don't even seem to be trying too hard. I would understand if these cable TV show guys have proven themselves on a major film level. But they haven't.

Whatever. THOR was a good movie. THOR 2 is off the radar for now. No interest.
mattattack - 12/24/2011, 12:36 PM
Thor sucked and I'm sure this will suck too unless the script grows some balls.
Wildaniel - 12/24/2011, 12:38 PM
I guess hes a good choice. Patty Jenkins would have been awesome!!!
Ghostfire - 12/24/2011, 12:47 PM
Oh well, Jenkins would've been awesome, but she's still on board for a future Marvel project, so will see what that project is. As for Taylor, who knows he might suprise us with a good sequel. You never know!
aztecRaingod - 12/24/2011, 12:56 PM
The movie will be epic and this guy will do a terrific job. He knows something about an old world style, like the medieval imagery of "A game of thrones". I am sure he will seamlessly apply it into a Norse theme.

All you haters and Negative Nancys should get a life or a Xanax prescription.
Geeksiah - 12/24/2011, 1:13 PM
What's wrong with saying Money?

Lets face it.. Thor two is actually the Avengers.
Same with Cap and Hulk..

That said if Avengers makes Money and It will because no matter how good it is it's gonna make its money back in two weeks with Us and International sales and go big on DVD.... it literally cannot flop no matter how bad it is.

That means Cap 2 and Thor (the Real films are throw always they will make money no matter who directs them and lets face it.. Directors don't direct Marvel films.. Marvel does (and that;s why they are so good)

Bodwulf - 12/24/2011, 1:14 PM
And movie goers everywhere said " who? "
RR51 - 12/24/2011, 1:19 PM
redleaf - 12/24/2011, 1:32 PM
At this rate, Avengers 2 will be directed by an intern.
logicoflame - 12/24/2011, 1:33 PM
Joss Whedon was in the similar boat. Gauranted Joss will be in dense after Avengers. Taylor is great , check out his Throne epis
Spidey31 - 12/24/2011, 1:47 PM
I'm kinda glad marvel studios dosent have Spidey rights, who knows what Disney would have done with him.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 12/24/2011, 1:48 PM
Basically his job is to say "yes, sir" to every marvel exec.

I kid, solid hire. Now, let's hope the majority of this movie takes place in Asgard and not a town that consists of a single block.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 12/24/2011, 1:49 PM
By the way I'm really digging the new layout CBM keep it up. It's actually a little more user friend on my phone.
Spidey31 - 12/24/2011, 1:49 PM
Marvel studio movies have been okay ever since Disney took over, notice how tony stark isn't really as playboy like he was in Ironman 1?
nowtheresaBATman - 12/24/2011, 1:51 PM
good
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 12/24/2011, 1:55 PM
@Spidey

The reason for that is they still want to be able to promote these movies in their theme parks. It's kind of hard to sell movie merchandising based off a character who is a boozer and is promiscuous with the ladies. The thing is, they don't need to get extremely adult with Marvel movies, they just need to not pander which I felt they did with Thor and Cap. Both were good movies, that had the potential to be great.

Apparently the Avengers is supposed to be a little "darker" but I don't think it has to be dark to be good. Just give us a good story that makes us care about what is going on. Don't spoon feed us some generic plot that has the hero's kicking ass just for the sake of kicking ass. Give us real drama, and don't dumb down the story. I think the Avengers will be great, but I worry that it might be trying too hard, and it could lead to it being a little incoherent. I hope I'm wrong because that movie is key to a lot of CBM's going forward.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 12/24/2011, 1:57 PM
But then again in Iron Man 2 he did get wasted at a party and urinated in his suit. I thought that was a little childish, and low brow. Definitely not a scene that Disney can show in the shops in their theme parks, but nothing too adult there either.
Spidey31 - 12/24/2011, 2:04 PM
Fanboy- I see I just like how Sony is going with the realistic feel with spideyand it seems to be working based on the comic con footage they showed which was I have got to say AMAZING!
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 12/24/2011, 2:11 PM
@Spidey31

I heard that the footage was amazing. Spiderman was witty and seemed to actually enjoy his powers. I can't wait to see some new footage. It will be the surprise hit of the summer. I hope they release it a few weeks earlier though, because I don't think it will do as well as it can opening two weeks before TDKR.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 12/24/2011, 2:12 PM
(btw, definitely jealous you go to see that footage, I wanted to go to comic con, but I had to go out of town for a conference that weekend).
TheMarmoset - 12/24/2011, 2:14 PM
Marvel Studios have always had a great eye for talent with both directors and actors. And despite them being praised for nearly every single person they have hired, some of you still aren't pleased?

May I remind you all that Patty Jenkins was 'cheap' too and nobody had a problem with her. Oh, that's right. She directed a decent movie nearly a decade ago. The guy they just hired has worked on some of the best American television shows of the past decade. Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Sopranos, Homicide: Life of the Street, Lost, Boardwalk Empire, Rome, Deadwood, Sex in the City, and Oz as a resume is far better than Monster. A movie that was only good because of Charlize Theron who probally wouldn't be in Thor 2 anyway.

OverlyManlyMan - 12/24/2011, 2:14 PM
I agree with Spidey31
PaulRom - 12/24/2011, 2:15 PM
Good choice. May be cheap compared to choices like Peter Jackson or Guillermo del Toro, but Taylor's Game Of Thrones experience convinces me that he'll do a good job. Let's see how long he lasts before he leaves over creative differences.
TheMarmoset - 12/24/2011, 2:17 PM
You people didn't even know who Patty Jenkins was when she was announced and now she might as well be Chris Nolan. I will never understand the infatuation with her on this website. Are you guys thinking Patty Jenkins is the same person as Kathryn Bigelow or something?!
TheMarmoset - 12/24/2011, 2:24 PM
They were never going to get people like Peter Jackson, del Toro, JJ Abrams, and all these other big names who are busy on other projects. Most superhero movies tend to get unknowns anyway. Marc Webb, Chris Nolan, Sam Raimi, Jon Favreau, Kenneth Branagh, Joe Johnston, Zach Snyder, Matt Vaughn,Bryan Singer etc. None of these people were A-list directors when hired to do their respective superheroes.
mgeoff88 - 12/24/2011, 2:34 PM
I was excited to see what Patty Jenkins could do with Thor 2.

When that fell through and Alan Taylor was mentioned, I was hoping he would get the directing gig. His film credits(TV) speak for themselves.

With him I think we'll get a great sequel.
