After years and years of waiting fans are getting their wish, The Dark Knight Returns is being made in to an animated movie. Part One of the two part movie is set to hit stores this month on the 25th, with Part Two expected sometime in early 2013. News has been pretty quiet on the second movie, until now. TvGuide has released the first still from the animated film that showcases The Joker, who will be voiced by Michael Emerson. Emerson is excited to get the chance to play The Clown Prince of Crime saying, "He's one of those great villains that an actor like me likes to play because he has layers — he has a face for the world and a face for himself. He is, in a way, a villain who is a natural actor. All of that is that is delightful and confounding at the same time." He went on to say that the role of The Joker is freeing because of the largeness of it. That he doesn't do anything part way, everything is cranked up to 11.

Those familiar with The Dark Knight Returns story also knows that Superman plays a part towards the end. Actor Mark Valley has been cast as the Man Of Steel, and joins Emerson as The Joker as well as Peter Weller returning as Batman. The Dark Knight Returns Part Two is scheduled to be released sometime in early 2013.

Michael Emerson!! That guy is amazing
soundwave129 - 9/4/2012, 7:42 AM
Oh hell yes! Emerson is the best possible choice for TDK Returns Joker.
inky - 9/4/2012, 7:52 AM
good move for the joker and sends back images of fear and horror to scare all.
RunDTC - 9/4/2012, 7:55 AM
am I the only person that doesn't like The Dark Knight Returns? Batman is my favorite superhero and I read every Batman graphic novel I can find but I don't enjoy TDKR.
thewonderer - 9/4/2012, 8:00 AM
MICHEAL EMERSON!!!! Thats pure pure genius, best VA choice for Joker since Hamill.

Good god thats incredble
Dedpool - 9/4/2012, 8:01 AM
WHOA!! The art is sick! I so can't wait for this! Good casting too! I would've loved DiMaggio returning but this rocks!
superman7 - 9/4/2012, 8:02 AM
Holy shit! Benjamin Linus is perfect for TDKR joker!
IIIAdamantiumIII - 9/4/2012, 8:04 AM
lol he looks like Clooney
superman7 - 9/4/2012, 8:06 AM
@ rundtc

Part of me hares the story but part of me loves it simply Bc it started to give superheroes their balls back. Even if frank miller just superimposed the frank miller character into batman. (Like he does with every story he's written)
Tainted87 - 9/4/2012, 8:14 AM
I'm curious as to where they'll end part 1, now.

Kind of disappointed, but that was unavoidable. I've always thought Andrew Robinson would do a great TDKR Joker.

The only thing I've seen Emerson in was Saw, and he didn't do a whole lot of talking there.

I can't get into this story. The movie looks good though and I'll pick it up
justified1 - 9/4/2012, 8:26 AM
The book i mean. I don't like the layout
marvel72 - 9/4/2012, 8:33 AM
michael emerson was f*ckin awesome in lost & now he's gonna be awesome as the joker.
Minghagz - 9/4/2012, 8:39 AM
I'm so happy this is a 2 part animated film. Is there a release date for part 2?
monkeyhead78 - 9/4/2012, 8:41 AM
Release yourself already!!!!!!
Tainted87 - 9/4/2012, 8:42 AM
Or Rutger Hauer... don't judge me.
Ryguy88 - 9/4/2012, 8:45 AM
Wait, so Batman retires and then comes back to fight crime again? The Batman I know would NEVER retire;) I bet Chris Nolan wrote this crap!
Ryguy88 - 9/4/2012, 8:49 AM
I also think Emerson is a great choice for The Joker, call me not a real Batman fan but I'm really sick of hearing Hammil's overly cartoony voice doing The Joker every time. A change is nice.
Bobbywoodhogan - 9/4/2012, 8:49 AM
The Joker design looks just like Jack Nicholson. Love it !!!!
Bobbywoodhogan - 9/4/2012, 8:53 AM
Forgot to say I think Mark Valley is a great choice for Superman.
RSDhillon - 9/4/2012, 8:53 AM
Holy what? Ben? WHAT?
I had no idea!
I want to see this movie so much more now!

@Ryguy88 WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU!? You've never heard of the Dark Knight Returns? IT CAME OUT IN THE '80S. No, not Nolan--MILLER. FRANK MILLER.
lntrn8 - 9/4/2012, 8:59 AM
@Ryguy88 - lol you are funny! this cartoon is based off of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns - which re-revolutionized Batman. You did read that book right? I think Nolan was in High School when it came out, so . . . Nolan did not write that.
hoodedjester - 9/4/2012, 9:00 AM
@ Ryguy88 - you gotta read the book to understand why he retired in the first place. It's more of a forced retirement that also explains what happened to the justice league too.

The book is a fantastic read and it will cost you less than 15.00 on comixology if you like reading comics digitally. I'd seriously recommend picking it up. One of the best, if not the best Batman stories ever told
Tainted87 - 9/4/2012, 9:05 AM
I think Ryguy88 was being facetious....
Because people like me hate that Batman retired in the Dark Knight Rises, claiming that the Batman we know would never give up and quit.

But he's missing the fact that this is not in any way, mainstream continuity, and his remark is about as spot-on as saying Superman would never conquer the Earth.
GoILL - 9/4/2012, 9:12 AM
Can't wait to pick up Part 1 on the 25th.
Dedpool - 9/4/2012, 9:18 AM
And Kudos for Mark valley as Superman!!
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/4/2012, 9:20 AM
Haha sweet!
marvel72 - 9/4/2012, 9:34 AM
the problem with nolan's retirement of batman was......

-it took seven years training to become batman

-he was batman six months taking on rhas, scarecrow & the joker.

-retires for eight years

-makes a comeback to take on bane

-then put on the shelf for another 3-5 months

-makes another comeback only to retire again
jimpinto24 - 9/4/2012, 9:39 AM
Joker is one of my favorite comic book villians. Looking forward to TDKR Pt2 next year.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/4/2012, 9:45 AM
marvel72
I think he was Batman for more than 6 months because joker says "a year ago these cops and lawyers would cross any of you" Plus about 1-2 months most likely went by during the dark knight.
Still though, that is a major problem with the Nolan films. He wasn't Batman for a long time.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/4/2012, 9:49 AM
Guys I am pretty sure Ryguy88 was being sarcastic.
