Guillermo del Toro Offers a Brief Update on the JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Project

In a recent interview with Total Film, director Guillermo del Toro dropped a few new details about the movie adaptation project of Justice League Dark (tentatively titled Dark Universe) he's attached to, including the story arc he'd like to concentrate upon in the movie. Check it out after the jump...

Following the release of Mama in the United Kingdom, Total Film recently chatted with the producer of the Andres Muschietti-helmed horror outing, Guillermo del Toro (Blade II, Hellboy movie series, Pan's Labyrinth). And with the famed director's recent attachment to DC Comics' Justice League Dark adaptation project - currently titled Heaven Sent Dark Universe - of course the website didn't skip the chance to question him about his "comic book passion project." Certainly, del Toro remained secretive about the vital details, but here's what he had to offer about the project's development. "I am going to be presenting my storyline to DC and Warners of where I want to take this universe," he said. "We do have a writer, but until that is firmed up, I have to keep it a secret. I hope it happens."

It may come up as no surprise, but the Pacific Rim director admitted that he's always been a big fan of the characters related to the team. "It's going really, really well. It's like meeting old friends. I grew up with Demon Etrigan, with Swamp Thing, with Deadman, so these are characters that are near and dear to my heart." When asked about the story arc we should expect to see in the movie, Guillermo del Toro explained that he prefers one that pulls in the characters' origin tales, rather than the arc currently ongoing in the comics. "I'd love to use the origins that are proper to each character. I love the idea of Jason Blood as a paladin and a knight...I love the entire Constantine mythology, the Dead Man mythology, the Alec Holland Swamp Thing mythology. These are really rich things to well, and to dig." What do you think of this? As usual, be sure to sound off with your thoughts on the space provided below.

Justice League Dark is a team of supernatural heroes within the DC Universe, brought together by Madame Xanadu and led by sorcerer John Constantine. It is an ongoing DC Comics series, first announced as part of the company's universe wide overhaul, and was written by Peter Milligan, with art by Mikel Janin. The title launched on September 28, 2011. From issue nine, writer Jeff Lemire became the principal writer on the series.

Until they have set photos I don't believe this movie will happen.
Carl - 2/26/2013, 2:56 AM
If its as faithfull as his hellboy movies, [frick] it.
TokenNerd - 2/26/2013, 3:07 AM
I can't wait for this, hoping it does happen and that the production and writing team have more luck with this than JL has!
Luigi - 2/26/2013, 3:09 AM
This sounds exactly like Hellboy
woodsy100 - 2/26/2013, 3:11 AM
No one actually thinks this is going to happen, do they?
IronDean2099 - 2/26/2013, 3:11 AM
I wonder if they'll use Keanu Reeves. It makes sense to, assuming he'd do it. Otherwise you have to retell the characters origin with a different actor. With all the other random characters that people won't know much about as it is, I'd say get all the help you can and save screen time for the others.
jimoakley666 - 2/26/2013, 3:26 AM
Hopefully they'll do Constantine correctly this time as a sharp blonde scouser and not some thick sounding surfer yank.

this is the proper way to go. the JL characters outside of Batman are all cornballs. so instead of making their movies Dark to match his. make a JL Dark instead.

if made properly will shit on Marvel Studio's vese.
TheHawkWithin - 2/26/2013, 3:38 AM
This will never be made, dont get your hopes up.
Spideyguy94 - 2/26/2013, 3:44 AM
@jimoakley666 I'm a scouser and our accent sounds terrible on movies and tv. But I wouldn't mind Constantine having one for the movie.
Shamo - 2/26/2013, 3:46 AM
@thehawk, what makes u say that? with Batman finished and the sucess Marvel Studios, Fox and Sony have all had with their multiple comic franchises it's very clear that WB wants to utilize theirs as well and get a piece of the pie.

and GDT has always spoken about his love for those characters.

AmazingFantasy - 2/26/2013, 4:29 AM

Jollem - 2/26/2013, 4:36 AM
bizarro says this won't get made
jimoakley666 - 2/26/2013, 4:37 AM
@Spideyguy94 - Both my maternal grandparents (well, nana was from Birkenhead, but what's a bit of water, eh ;-) ) and my missus' family are scousers so I'm fully aware of the accent. I'm just over the way on the Dee estuary in North Wales.

Though it doesn't have to be all Brookside vs John Bishop though. I'd point out some famous scousers in Daniel Craig, Jason Isaacs, David Morrisey, the 8th Doctor, Paul McGann, and 4th Doctor Tom Baker, who don't all knock it back like Paul O'Grady. A bit of the old Mersey slur would be nice though.

YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

Jer3miah - 2/26/2013, 4:46 AM
I like where his head is at, and I love him as a director. But he seems very interested in death and necro characters. Kinda strange. O_o
xXkryptoniteXx - 2/26/2013, 4:56 AM
[frick] yeah for Jason blood/Etrigan movie. I've been saying that from the start, and that's a good property that WB/DC can establish for a live action film. Del Toro you are the man!
marvel72 - 2/26/2013, 5:17 AM
it would be great if this comes off,but we are talking warner bros here.

i can see this joining the flash in development hell.
InfiniteMonkey - 2/26/2013, 5:35 AM
I wish he was pushing At the Mountains of Madness instead.

This one is too way off for now.
TheGlove - 2/26/2013, 5:36 AM
I really hope this comes off, could be the best comic book adaption to date with Del Toro on board. What a sweet film this could be.
Jollem - 2/26/2013, 5:41 AM
PsyGuy - 2/26/2013, 5:43 AM
Why does this have more steam than the JL Movie????

but YES to everything YES
Nomis1800 - 2/26/2013, 5:48 AM
I hope PACIFIC RIM is a MASSIVE success so that WB can give him a lot of money to make this as well!!! This whole project sounds awesome, it would be really nice to have something like this opposed to all (i.e. most) those happy superhero installments and such.
TheIconicMan - 2/26/2013, 5:49 AM
In Guillermo del Toro the whole universe trusts!
HellsHammer - 2/26/2013, 5:52 AM
Please God!
bbarber2323 - 2/26/2013, 5:55 AM
Speaking of death...Jer3 miah is still around...ugh. Its been nice not having you here.
IronManny819 - 2/26/2013, 6:06 AM
God, I hope this happens.
ShadowOfTheWeb - 2/26/2013, 6:07 AM
make it so DC. Make it so.
longbowhunter - 2/26/2013, 6:13 AM
I'm a huge fan of DC's supernatural and horror stuff. Spent last night reading Books of Magic while at work. This movie getting made would be like having a wish granted.
xstryker - 2/26/2013, 6:25 AM
If they can do this, maybe they could do an Animal Man movie - and if so, they should go straight for the Oscar.
MementoMori - 2/26/2013, 6:34 AM
I'm still more than pissed off with what DC did to one of my all time favorite characters, John Constantine. I read that Hellblazer was ended, and could have cried. This sounds promising, but always thought of John as more of a loner than a team guy.
Godzillafart - 2/26/2013, 6:36 AM
Seems like a lot to tackle in one film, but I'd love to see Del Toro give it a shot. Some great characters here.
mrHJK - 2/26/2013, 6:39 AM
This sounds really awesome. Hope it happens and soon, unlike 90% of his projects.
SpideyQuad - 2/26/2013, 6:42 AM
I don't know, I just can't see this getting green lit when they can't even get the regular Justice League straight.
Chewtoy - 2/26/2013, 6:47 AM
People, if Pacific Rim is a success, this will never happen... Because "Pacific Rim 2" and any further sequels will take up his time.

And, let's face it... The odds of it happening at all are pretty slim. GdT has to have one of the lowest percentages of potential projects making news that actually end up getting filmed. (At least by him, if you include the Hobbit.)
ComradeGrey - 2/26/2013, 6:49 AM
Warner Brothers. This will get [frick]ed up somehow.
