According to Variety, Godzilla looks set to earn around $90 million this weekend. That's based on early estimates for today as tracking indicates that it will kick off its North American run with a mighty $35 million. That includes the impressive $9.3 million from late showings on Thursday, and with an estimated $31+ million on Saturday and $22+ million on Sunday, there's a very strong chance that the Gareth Edwards helmed remake will break the $90 million barrier. In 1998, the version starring Matthew Broderick opened with only $44 million. This take on the classic monster is doing well overseas as well. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is expected to pass $700 million today, while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is nearing $600 million.

Now, those of you who follow me on Twitter will know that I loved Godzilla, and I really can't recommend checking it out this weekend enough. If you go in expecting a brainless two hours slugfest between Godzilla and MUTO, you'll likely be disappointed, but Edwards brings the titular monster to life incredibly here and the final battle is well worth the wait. It's not perfect, but it IS one of 2014's best movies yet. Take notes Pacific Rim fans; THIS is how it's done!

Movie was somewhat dissapointing but my friends are dragging me to go see it again saturday. Ugh

I didn't even have a problem with amount of time Godzilla had, my big thing was the horrible focus on dull characters. I give major respect to the Director for what he was trying to do, but he miss the mark on how to do a slow burn.
DeathstrokeTerminator - 5/16/2014, 5:53 PM
Aaron TJ's character was so lame in this movie.
DeathstrokeTerminator - 5/16/2014, 5:56 PM
But it was still Epic!
McNyagano - 5/16/2014, 5:56 PM
@DeathstrokeTerminator

He was soo wooden, it was off putting to say the least.

I hope Whedon can coax out a better performance out of him for AOU.
JoJo1982 - 5/16/2014, 6:00 PM
Just saw it
The movie I'd disappointing!!!

Like y make a Godzilla movie if he's only in the movie for a lil bit more than 10 minutes in a movie that's 2 hours long
thejackwagon94 - 5/16/2014, 6:01 PM
Completely necessary Pacific Rim diss. That sure added to the article. I was certainly hoping to see the nuclear terror side of the Big Guy, and was kinda disappointed they jumped straight to the ass kickin' world saviour, but damned if it wasn't still awesome. I really liked the effort they put into giving both Godzy and the Mutos lots of personality.
SpiderFraud - 5/16/2014, 6:02 PM
Aaron Taylor-Johnson was the real villain of this movie...G-Man really saved the day.
Philimander - 5/16/2014, 6:04 PM
That's great! I really liked the movie and have been a Godzilla fan my whole life and watched almost all the movies except some from the millennium series. I do agree with some of the complaints about the characters but it was still a great movie. I really liked that they kept the soundtrack from 2001: A Space Odyssey that they used in the trailers in one scene because that's my favourite movie of all time.
Spidey91 - 5/16/2014, 6:06 PM
so you could say that Godzilla...stomped on the competition?
Shredder - 5/16/2014, 6:07 PM

Movie achieved what it set out to do. Leaving me wanting MORE.

Bring on the sequel!
VIRILEMAN - 5/16/2014, 6:08 PM
"WITH AN AMAZING 90 MILLION DOLLAR WEEKEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Says Josh. The same amount The Amazing Spider-Man 2 got but was some how reported on like it was not much money at all.

Why do you keep editorializing your news posts Josh? Not that I'm complaining. I actually find it refreshing from the normal, dry way of reporting movie numbers as they come in.
Philimander - 5/16/2014, 6:08 PM
And also I don't understand the complaint about Godzilla not being in the movie that much because he's in it a lot! Just because you can't see his face the whole time doesn't mean he isn't there. Also in the original which is f'ing great he's only shown for 17 minutes and in this movie it's a lot more just you don't see his face all the time li you did in the original.
Shroombeast - 5/16/2014, 6:09 PM
I [frick]ing love this movie. Sequel please!
TheRationalNerd - 5/16/2014, 6:09 PM
I haven't seen the film yet but I think it's more of a suspenseful thriller with action. It's like we're getting (if not a realistic) a more thematic message that is being expressed/represented within the film itself. "Let Nature take it's course." , "Let them fight"---stuff like that really hypes me up for this film. It seems more than just a regular "blow em up, dice em up" monster flick it's a metaphorical symbol of how nature can truly save your a** if you let it do what needs to be done it hour interfering with it. As well as the conflicts that will come along with trying to interfere with it as well. It's just deeper than a lot of people think based on all the action scenes within previous Godzilla flicks. Even if you watch those you'll see that There's at least 2-3 action scenes involving the creature.

i saw yesterday and love it!

Wow, incredible. Haven't seen it yet, but the prediction was about 70 mill tops.
REPOMAN - 5/16/2014, 6:10 PM

Now that Legendary Pictures are set to make tons of loot with Godzilla, I doubt they'll be making a Pacific Rim sequel.

SpiderFraud - 5/16/2014, 6:10 PM
@Philimander

Felt the same way, I thought we got a good amount of Godzilla.
PanochaLibre - 5/16/2014, 6:17 PM
Saw godzilla last night. It was underwhelming! Dialog about as corny as the last Godzilla film. Action is ok, godzilla is the best part. The movie is over long and doesn't reach the emotional peaks it reaches for. Pacific Rim is better by far.
Kyos - 5/16/2014, 6:19 PM
Lazy repost:

I'd have wished for a slightly bigger Japanese element in the movie. Also please don't hurt me for it, but I didn't think Cranston was particularly great in this (I admit I just might have problems with post-Heisenberg performances in general).

Taylor-Johnson was okay, but not exactly the leading man I'd hoped for. Also, given that we already got a lot of focus on the military via Strathairn and Watanabe's scientist, I'd have prefered a civilian protagonist. At least they should have made better use of Olsen.

All that aside: I really liked the movie! I wish they'd done more than a few things differently to some degree, but I still had a great time. I loved the way they used Godzilla. Sure, he wasn't there much, but damn, when he was on screen he did what a king does - he ruled!

Long live the king.
MightyZeus - 5/16/2014, 6:24 PM
Loved the film. I thought it was the perfect introduction to bring back Godzilla. This film was amazing and just spectacular.
I'd recommend seeing the film in IMAX in 3D
Spidey91 - 5/16/2014, 6:25 PM
why would they NOT make the Pacific Rim sequel? the success of Godzilla is the more reason to make it.
MantiniumBorn - 5/16/2014, 6:28 PM
I Loved PACIFIC RIM For its jaw dropping set pieces and for its concept of a narrative...YES...well...Its narrative of a manga cartoon, which it achieves, there are scenes in this film between characters that are literally Manga cartoon cliche's,literally from a manga cartoon,PACIFIC RIM pays homage to that, and for that it deserves serious praise, and thats what makes it special with all that spectacle....its a manga cartoon brought to life,do people watch PACIFIC RIM like a serious movie....

I am looking forward to GODZILLA as it will be a more serious toned Kaiju movie, why cant people like both Kaiju Movies one like a Manga Cartoon and one that takes the notions of the first GODZILLA movie seriously...

I wont a world...where in one year we get a Manga style Kaiju Movie and a serious toned Kaiju movie the following year..

People are so borg....

Spidey91 - [why would they NOT make the Pacific Rim sequel? the success of Godzilla is the more reason to make it.]

Because, in comparison, Pacific Rim underperformed and with Godzilla having similar tropes and themes, and being successful, what would be the point taking a huge financial risk on another Pacific Rim?

The audience have spoken and they prefer their big monster films to feature Godzilla.

SauraLilvera - 5/16/2014, 6:32 PM
MUTO: The Movie is quite the success. When will we get a real Godzilla movie?

XMen DOFP will surely cut Zilla's tail
beane2099 - 5/16/2014, 6:43 PM
If you only want to see monster fights go re-watch Pacific Rim. This movie is more like a disaster film that's about monsters. If 2 hours of mindless monster fights is what you think a Godzilla film is than I suggest watching the original film. Cause that ain't what Godzilla is about primarily.

I liked this movie a lot but when you think about it, the plot has a lot of similarities to the 98 film (I won't say how to avoid spoilers) only it's was done a lot better here.
PanochaLibre - 5/16/2014, 6:45 PM
If I hadn't seen pacific rim, I would've been blown away by this. Fact is, the Kaiju in rim are terrifying.

I was disappointed by some of the choices they made, but I was okay with the amount of screentime for Godzilla and I really enjoyed the film so I definitely like to see a sequel. But with a sequel I expect a bigger budget and with that more Godzilla screentime.
IronLantern79 - 5/16/2014, 6:54 PM
Saw this Thursday night and I LOVE IT! It's true you don't get to see much of The King of Monsters, but what you do see is AMAZING! Can't wait for it on Blu Ray.
