BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Finally Reaches $700 Million Worldwide

It's taken quite some time, but The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has finally reached $700 million worldwide. However, X-Men: Days of Future Past has topped it domestically, making it the first X-Men movie to outgross one starring Spider-Man! Read on for details...

With over $500 million from overseas, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has finally managed to hit the $700 million mark at the worldwide box office. It's has yet to top Captain America: The Winter Soldier (which has $710 million as of right now), while the fact that X-Men: Days of Future Past is closing in on $200 million in North America means that it has topped the Marc Webb helmed sequel to be the #1 summer movie. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will actually end up being the lowest grossing of the five films in the franchise domestically, but Sony must at least be reasonably happy with its overseas performances as it is second behind only Spider-Man 3's total of $554 million. It was recently rumoured that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been pushed back to 2017, and you can read more details on that by clicking here. How many times have you suffered through the movie?

Lol at the title.

This film blew all kinds of ass. You walk into it expecting a good CBM, you leave it feeling like you were pile-drived by the Rock.

"How many times have you suffered through the movie?"

Okay, I chuckled.
Amazing512 - 6/14/2014, 2:43 PM
Cap beat Spidey and Xmen...damn
rebellion - 6/14/2014, 2:43 PM
it deserved to flop but whatever.
Jhuntdaprodigy - 6/14/2014, 2:44 PM
Damn I bet it won't even outgross the first ASM film. That's got to be somewhat viewed as a failure in my opinion, especially when mixed with the critical reaction and the fact that it's the lowest domestic ever.
Kyos - 6/14/2014, 2:44 PM
Good for Spidey... and Emma Stone! I didn't care much for the movie itself, but I'm happy for Emma that this movie is doing kind of well. :)
Mike89 - 6/14/2014, 2:44 PM
wow i forgot this piece of shit was still in theaters.
patrat18 - 6/14/2014, 2:44 PM
Josh is funny asf.

I know I'm one of the few, but I really liked TASM 2. I have one main issue with it that I will probably add in an editorial I'm planning but I have to say, it is the only movie that had me gobsmacked and kind of emotional. I don't give AF about the box office tbh.
Pasto - 6/14/2014, 2:45 PM
The banner for this article looks like Spidey is taunting me...
SuperCat - 6/14/2014, 2:45 PM
Can't wait to skip the third one!
Sipprelle - 6/14/2014, 2:46 PM
How unfortunate. Films that bad shouldn't make so much money.
JoJo1982 - 6/14/2014, 2:47 PM
At the rate X-men is going it should be hitting the 700 million club next weekend(or a few days afterwards)
MrMartinMarvel - 6/14/2014, 2:47 PM
As I've said before, while it's not a horrible movie, it is the very definition of mediocre.

If Cap 2 was released anytime in the summer, it would not have done as well as it did.

Marvel was very smart with the April release date. Nothing good came out weeks after Cap 2 and people kept on going to see it.

So yeah, the Cap 2 box office is definitely not surprising in the least, but of course people will attack TASM 2 and DOFP with statements like "people care more about Cap than Spider-Man or X-Men!"
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/14/2014, 2:52 PM
Good for spidey.

@jojo its going to be tough for dofp to reach $700 million with percentage drops it has had.
Omarvls - 6/14/2014, 2:52 PM
Marvel

3 700+ million dollar films in 1 summer

Damn
(Marvel/FOX/Sony)
0megaDaGod - 6/14/2014, 2:53 PM
Glad you included the part about X Men passing it domestically

The first Spider Man movie almost doubled the box office take of the first X Men movie worldwide if I'm not mistaken

So I have to ask: How badly do you have to fail in order for your Spider Man movie to be even in the same ballpark as an X Men movie? And lets not even talk about Cap

I'd pay good money to see you be quiet for a day.
kinghulk - 6/14/2014, 2:53 PM
TWS IMO was the best out of the CBM's this year followed closely by DOFP then way way way behind is ASM2.
Omarvls - 6/14/2014, 2:54 PM
Sony moved Spider Man 3 to 2017 so they can release
Sinister Six in 2016
They need something new instead of a another Spider Man sequel
Highflyer - 6/14/2014, 2:54 PM
One of spidey's best movies.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/14/2014, 2:55 PM
@Wondercrustybread People do care about Cap then Spidey and fox men. Just accept it. I liked spidey 2 and Cap is amongst the greats in film with comicbook characters.
robster - 6/14/2014, 2:56 PM
And it didn't take quite some time since it hasn't even been out quite some time yet. So a lot of socalled comic fans didn't like it,a lot of people actually did as well. But I guess there are just WAY too many superhero movies coming out these days. I don't even bother watching them all anymore. I pick and choose and see the heroes I like,Spidey is one of them. So Josh isn't a Spidey fan, plenty of people aren't. Plain and simple. But it's good to hear it hasn't actually failed,as some people want you to believe. Underperformed, sure, but that's not failure.

J-R!
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/14/2014, 2:57 PM
I agree @highflyer. ;)
GeekyCheekyChic - 6/14/2014, 2:57 PM
and at what point do they start refunds?
SuperCat - 6/14/2014, 2:57 PM
I don't know if the movie can be considered a flop. Sh*t? Yes.
JamesMan - 6/14/2014, 2:59 PM
I liked it a lot, saw it 3 times. While not my favorite Spider-Man film I think it captures the perfect essence of a Spider-Man comic, over the top, tone shifting up the ass, great romance, amazing action, very human characters, and bright vibrant colors.
Dandy - 6/14/2014, 2:59 PM
I didn't care for the film but hey, I love the character of Spidey so good for him....I guess.
thewonderer - 6/14/2014, 2:59 PM
Jesus, say something good about Marvel's timing with Cap 2 release and people still attack you. Cap 2 deserves the success. It was a good movie. The first good one in Phase 2 so far in my opinion. I personally liked Days of Future Past more but to each their own. TASM 2 wasn't that good but it was decent enough and I definitely don't think its trash.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/14/2014, 3:00 PM
Spidey 2 wasn't as impressive here in the states but that's ok as it has did blockbuster numbers overseas. Not many comicbook films gross over $500 million overseas. ;)

Spidey is still amongst the greats and it grossed more than man of steel. Budget is debatable as Sony are hiding the numbers lol. ;)
JoJo1982 - 6/14/2014, 3:01 PM
@remy

It's pretty much likely
626 million so far..... It should total up tomorrow with 650 million or more

Should be hard to do it before TF comes out in 13 days
0megaDaGod - 6/14/2014, 3:02 PM
Yes, if Cap was released in Summer instead of Spring it would've made less money

We know this because most movies released in April make more than those released in May

In fact, most of the highest grossing movies of the year aren't released in the Summer when kids are out of school and there's a higher chance of making money at the box office

Except none of that is true

If Cap made more opening weekend than both Spidey and X Men, despite kids still being in school. It dropped less on a week by week basis, despite kids still being in school

If we're using our brains, we probably already realized Cap would've made EVEN MORE if it had either of the other CBMs release dates
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/14/2014, 3:02 PM
@rebel then delete that Shit lol. ;)
JoJo1982 - 6/14/2014, 3:02 PM
*shouldnt*
REPOMAN - 6/14/2014, 3:02 PM

It'll end up with more money than Days of Future Past at the box-office; not only that, Sony have full merchandising rights to Spider-Man which they bargained with Marvel for in exchange for TV rights. FOX has no merchandising for X-Men.

So with disc sales and merchandising, Spidey 2 will earn Sony its $1 billion and more.
