BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Tracking To Open With $60+ Million

Marvel have been going all out promoting Guardians of the Galaxy recently, and it looks set to pay off for them now as early tracking for the James Gunn helmed movie indicates that it will open with upwards of $60 million, though some say it could hit as much as $80 million...

All of Marvel's movies have been a risk to some degree, but Guardians of the Galaxy is arguably their riskiest venture yet (well, until Ant-Man). It opens in North America on August 1st, but pre-release tracking indicates that Kevin Feige's latest gamble will very much pay off. Data which came in today (via The Wrap)  projects a three day total of $60 million, a great start for a movie featuring such an obscure group of characters who even the geekiest of comic book fans aren't even that familiar with. However, as you can see below, some believe that Guardians of the Galaxy will do even better than that! Its only competition is James Brown biopic Get On Up, starring Chadwick Boseman, and with a production budget of $170 million, we should probably start getting ready for Guardians of the Galaxy 2. How much do you guys think the movie will earn next month?

Well...I called my boss. It turns out we were all off today. I need to start reading these memos they send to me. Oh well, I caught up on some stuff. I just ordered a sandwich and will watch some ESPN. Might even pour myself a drink.

I'm more interested in the quality of the film being at a high level, but I also want to see a big box office number, thus ensuring a GOTG sequel and continued movies about the cosmic side of the MCU. Also, as others have mentioned on here, this movie becoming an all-around success can only be seen as encouraging from the perspective of other studios, such as Warner Bros., who has been rumored to have plans for a Flash / Green Lantern team-up film.

300-350 FLOP
400-500 HIT
550-600 BLOCKBUSTER

Thor and Cap both opened at $65 million, so anywhere around this figure would be great! Solid numbers for sure, if it achieves at least $60 million and gets a mostly positive response, should launch a new franchise for sure.

Very much expect them to not announce a second film for 2017 at comic-con, instead waiting for this to open and then announce a sequel, assuming it does well enough.
Mrcool210 - 7/11/2014, 12:31 PM
this is the first movie ill see in imax, it better be worth it.
localsonlymills - 7/11/2014, 12:32 PM
I hope the best for this movie. Deserves success for being a genuine, creative film if nothing else.
Arrowhead77 - 7/11/2014, 12:33 PM
so how much $ is Marvel hoping it will make? I know they are not expecting a billion, but I would expect 500 to 600 million, maybe?
EzioKenway1225 - 7/11/2014, 12:34 PM
i know this is much more small scale, but alot of the theaters around the country, even mine, were packed for the 17 min preview and they were stil alot of people who got turned away
WayneCEO1 - 7/11/2014, 12:34 PM
Good opening. It just about confirms a sequel.
TheManFromMars - 7/11/2014, 12:36 PM

yossarian - 7/11/2014, 12:36 PM

Sounds good to me!
Comedian03 - 7/11/2014, 12:40 PM
I'm betting it'll be around 500
SilverShamrock - 7/11/2014, 12:43 PM
@WinterSolider33 -- I feel that way about every Marvel film just before I watch it, but, I agree, I feel even more strongly about this one. It's amazing that two years ago, when the project was announced, I had no knowledge of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and now I've read just about the entire Abnett / Lanning series. The characters seem as familiar to me at this point as The Avengers.
EzioKenway1225 - 7/11/2014, 12:43 PM
also,i ..ahem..acquired the 17 min preview audio and i cant stop enjoy it, i was really on the fence with casting bradley cooper as rocket but he steal the show
Bl00dwerK - 7/11/2014, 12:43 PM
After seeing the soundtrack list I'm even more excited to see it...
Interestein - 7/11/2014, 12:43 PM
Total will probably end up around $500m.

Super excited for the next chapter of Phase II, I can't believe it's already over.
Nomadic1 - 7/11/2014, 12:46 PM
Thor and Cap did about 300 mil or so. If it hits that mark it will be a success. Although, if it can reach 500 mil that would be blockbuster territory for this film.
SuperCat - 7/11/2014, 12:46 PM
Hoping it earns more than that.
TheRationalNerd - 7/11/2014, 12:47 PM
It'll probably hit 690-700 million just like every other CBM this summer so far. lol
TheRationalNerd - 7/11/2014, 12:48 PM
*600-700*
EzioKenway1225 - 7/11/2014, 12:48 PM
the competition now imo is between Apes, Turtles and Guardians,i think TMNT will make the most money, Apes will be the "best" film but my personal favorite will be Guardians, what abut u guys(and gals!!!!)?
DeusExSponge - 7/11/2014, 12:50 PM
I'm hoping it'll earn that sweet sweet $80 million opening, although I do expect it to at least have a $60 million opening as a minimum. Though $75 million would be ideal, and $80 million is the dream team spot!
dethpillow - 7/11/2014, 12:50 PM
@Tronknight - i know... what with all their big city fancy pants anumbericatin' over things.

how do they know what i'm gonna eat fer breakfast tomorrow?
i like to see them adjudicate that one...

you can take your calculators and your digital computers and your Epads and your business law counting degrees, and you can just stick em where the sun don't shine.

square root a 3. i'll show them the square root a 3, godammit.
XF14 - 7/11/2014, 12:51 PM
I'll be there opening day, no doubt.
TheRationalNerd - 7/11/2014, 12:51 PM
-DotPotA
-Expendables 3
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

(Taken Phone Call)

..Good Luck!
TelaVizion - 7/11/2014, 12:53 PM
I hate that Turtles is coming out the following week here in the states. It's gonna steal so much of Guardians' 2nd week shine.
Sipprelle - 7/11/2014, 12:53 PM
That's good I suppose, but you people have no idea how unknown this property still is to the general public. It's looking to do about 65 opening weekend, but most are expecting the total WW gross to max out at about 400-450, it's not going to be anywhere close to 500M. 400 is great for a movie like this, but it's not Cap 2 or anything, it's something that (even with the decent marketing) not as many people are going to see.
