Alex Kurtzman Offers Vague SPIDER-MAN Update; Says VENOM Follows SINISTER SIX

Not too long ago, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 looked like a sure thing. However, a tepid critical and commercial response means that movie is "still in conversation". Hit the jump for details on that, Sinister Six, Venom and a possible Black Cat movie...

In an interview with Collider, Alex Kurtzman was quizzed on the status of The Amazing Spider-Man 3. That movie was originally pencilled in for a 2016 release, with a fourth instalment tentatively scheduled for 2018. Throw in the announcement of Sinister Six and Venom spin-off's, and it seemed like Sony had big plans for this franchise...until the sequel was met with a mixed response by critics AND fans, and earned about $300 million less than the studio predicted after spending a whopping $250+ million on it. "It’s still in conversation," Kurtzman told the site. "Everybody is still figuring it out. It’s all up for grabs, right now. We’re just trying to figure it out."

As for Venom, Kurtzman revealed that the plan was/is for it to come out after Sinister Six and he is indeed still attached to direct. When a Black Cat movie was suggested due to the demand for more female led superheroes, he replied: "Anything is possible. We are always looking for opportunities like that. I can’t say a whole lot about it, but I wouldn’t rule anything out." And if that wasn't vague enough for you, here's what he said about any sort of possible connection between Sinister Six and Venom. "Everything is still on the table, right now. Because it’s a universe outside of the Spider-Man universe, even though it’s connected to it, those movies have to stand on their own. So, we’ll see. We’ll see how it goes."

Everything is still on the table? Sony are clearly rethinking their plans, and with Roberto Orci recently hinting at the fact that the franchise is in limbo, another reboot (or certainly a new team of writers and a new director) are probably very likely for The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Now, who wants to bet that the spin-off's never see the light of day? Sound off below!

Basically . . . . they have no idea what they're doing.

Doopie - 7/17/2014, 4:02 PM
figuring out = praying to god they can make it better
AlexanderLykins - 7/17/2014, 4:03 PM

Here comes the reboot!
Doopie - 7/17/2014, 4:04 PM
I don't hate the TASM films but let's be honest, they could be much much better. dropping Webb and finding some new writers and producers might be a good idea. but what do I know? I'm no Hollywood mogul
Nick56 - 7/17/2014, 4:04 PM
Id rather see a Black Cat movie than a S6 movie, or even venom for that matter.
DaVinci31 - 7/17/2014, 4:04 PM
"I'm kinda looking forward to this."

LOL

To what exactly?
Gyasiman - 7/17/2014, 4:04 PM
Amazing Spider-man 2 made 700 MILLION dollars.............. HOW IS THIS UNDER-PREFORMING!!!
JFerguson - 7/17/2014, 4:05 PM

Phronesis - 7/17/2014, 4:06 PM
As much of a cluster-[frick] The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was, why should I believe Sinister Six will be any better?
WayneCEO1 - 7/17/2014, 4:06 PM
Bring on venom
Doopie - 7/17/2014, 4:10 PM
Josh has made no bones about his feeling toward this film but it's kind of the gift that keeps on giving for him this year lol
Mrcool210 - 7/17/2014, 4:10 PM
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is only 7 million dollars below captain america the winter soldier, sure it may not have performed as well as expected, but if it made that kind of money? it is not in limbo, TASM 3 will come out. Lets just hope its good.
WayneCEO1 - 7/17/2014, 4:11 PM
Isn't this guy Orci's writing partner? If he is I don't want him directing Venom.
Bekss - 7/17/2014, 4:12 PM
@Gyasiman
It cost 600-650 millions
aRandomSinisterClone - 7/17/2014, 4:13 PM
the problem is they're too busy planning 5 movies at once and didnt focus on the current one. that's why we got 3 shitty story lines mixed into one movie. take out rhino and electro and you would have had a great flick. That harry actor was 1000% better then i thought. i bashed his casting and he stole the movie. even in shitty make up.
Omarvls - 7/17/2014, 4:14 PM
2016

Captain America "Operation Rebirth"
Batman v Superman "Dawn of Justice"
Sinister 6
X-Men Apocalypse
DrDoom - 7/17/2014, 4:15 PM
For people wondering why some are saying that TASM 2 underperformed, you have to realize that the movie cost 255 million to make, and had a nearly unprecedented 190 million marketing budget on top of that . . . . and it still made around 50 million less than its predecessor. Sony was banking on this movie ending up as a billion dollar plus hit, and it didn't even break the worldwide total of the first TASM film.
Pending - 7/17/2014, 4:18 PM
Remember back when TASM came out and people were saying that the reason TASM felt so incomplete was cause Sony had a plan and that this was a story that was gonna pan out over a trilogy of films?

Yeah good times.
Mrcool210 - 7/17/2014, 4:19 PM
and also if a movie is "still in conversation" that doesn't mean the franchise is in trouble, sure maybe they are reconsidering a few things, but you don't be that maybe movies that are coming out in 2016 (ant man for example) arn't still in conversation? They could still be changing a few things, Plus we don't know how close they really are when they mean, "Still in conversation" that could just mean they are putting some finishing touches on the script, we will just have to wait and see, but don't jump ship yet, until they announce "officially" that tasm 3 is either cancelled or delayed, then i think we are fine.
DrKinsolving - 7/17/2014, 4:20 PM
Sony, it didn't workout, Just let it go, give Spidey back to Marvel

TheDarkKryptonian - 7/17/2014, 4:21 PM
Why do I feel like in every interview these guys do, they're kinda just winging it?
3DOldskool - 7/17/2014, 4:21 PM
@DrKinsolving

Webb and Garfield should just give up their spots to Raimi and Maguire while keeping the same writers in the reboot franchise.
FastFlames - 7/17/2014, 4:22 PM
@Pending I do remember that hahahaha good times!
JamesMan - 7/17/2014, 4:23 PM
All will be revealed come Comic-Con I'm sure. I'm excited for the Spidey-verse.
JoJo1982 - 7/17/2014, 4:24 PM
Ouch!!!

It's not like the movie bombed
JoJo1982 - 7/17/2014, 4:25 PM
Oh yeah.... forgot who wrote this article
staypuffed - 7/17/2014, 4:26 PM
@DrKinsolving
Dude, not gonna happen.
Bread - 7/17/2014, 4:26 PM
I just want Sinister Six.
TheNightGuardian - 7/17/2014, 4:27 PM
I personally think it's the studio's fault. they've should've hired back Alvin sargent(wrote spider-man2,co-wrote spider-man3 and the amazing spider-man) i think he has the passion for the character and knows how to balance his life as peter and spider-man.. the problem is that kurtzman and orci are more of a sci-fi writers ,not comicbookmovie writers. they wrote 2 transformers movies , 2 star trek movies , and i REALLY liked into darkness.

I think the studio should do this:Remove marc webb from the director's chair ,although i really respect him as a director ,but i think it's too early for him to handle a massive franchise for a character like spider-man,and bring on a director who knows to balance the characters perfectly. the cast is great .. we all know that.
JamesMan - 7/17/2014, 4:28 PM
I think Josh should hand over all reporting duties on Spider-Man to another power user :P
Bread - 7/17/2014, 4:28 PM
@3DOldskool Get over it bro. Those movies are gone.
DrKinsolving - 7/17/2014, 4:29 PM
@JoJo1982

It kind of did bomb for a Spider-Man movie, it was the lowest performance at the Box Office for Spidey out of the whole franchise, Raimi's Spider-Man 1 performed better and it didn't even have 3-D prices.

Also, Sony obviously expected it to bring in more money
DrKinsolving - 7/17/2014, 4:30 PM
@staypuffed

I can wish though, right, haha
JamesMan - 7/17/2014, 4:31 PM
If FOX had three X-Men movies in a row that under-performed compared to the previous films and still kept going (leading to a pay-off) I think Sony will be fine.
0megaDaGod - 7/17/2014, 4:31 PM
I plugged his quotes into Google Translator

Here's what I got:

CaptainObvious - 7/17/2014, 4:32 PM
A Sinister Six film sounds like a desperate, cynical, dumb idea. I would not be upset if it never got made.
DrDoom - 7/17/2014, 4:32 PM
3DOldskool - 7/17/2014, 4:32 PM
@Bread

Please read my post(s) carefully next time before making a response.

Thanks.
