EXCLUSIVE: CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 Writers Confirm That We WON'T See The 1950s Psychotic Cap

When Captain America: The Winter Soldier screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely mentioned the psychotic 1950s Cap as a potential future villain earlier this year, many assumed that it meant we would see him in the next movie. Well, we can now confirm that definitely isn't the case...

Earlier this year, Captain America: The Winter Soldier screenwriter Christopher Markus briefly mentioned the possibility of using the psychotic 1950s Cap as a villain in Captain America 3. Despite never directly stating that, it didn't stop a lot of people jumping to the conclusion that that was the villain that the next movie (currently set for a May 6th, 2016 release) would focus on. When I got the chance to talk to both Markus and writing partner Stephen McFeely earlier today, I asked about those reports, and they set the record straight on the matter once and for all, making it clear that the off the cuff remark doesn't mean we should expect to see this particular bad guy.

Stephen McFeely: [Laughs] Chris, would you like to put that to bed?

Christopher Markus: Yes! That was a smart remark, off the cuff. What I love about that whole run, the whole existence of that, is the sort of single minded desire to retcon everything into continuity, you know? 'But there was five issues in 1950 where he was a jerk!' I know he was a crazed college professor who had plastic surgery, but I think we can honestly say that he will not be making an appearance.

Stephen McFeely: You know, there's probably 20 minutes of movie there. There's something interesting about a guy who so desperately want to be [Captain America] and be a tribute...I just don't think it's a whole movie.

It was clear talking to these guys that they love comic books and are very enthusiastic about the character and his supporting cast. Be sure to come back later this week for the full interview with the screenwriting duo as they talk about not using the Red Skull in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, whether or not Bucky had regained his memories by the end of that movie, their thoughts on future villains, not backing down from Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and much, much more.

sKeemAn - 7/22/2014, 1:43 PM
Glad thats debunked. It would've been good for a few minutes but not the whole movie.
Doopie - 7/22/2014, 1:43 PM
nah, he'll be black instead :)
isee - 7/22/2014, 1:48 PM
Iron Man 3 should have ended with You Shook Me All Night Long. Would have made phase 2 so much better.
KingOnslaught - 7/22/2014, 1:48 PM
Yeah it sounds cool on paper but i don't think it would translate all that well to film
charlie2094 - 7/22/2014, 1:51 PM
Awesome stuff, full interview should be great :)

This is good, some interesting concepts there but not something I'd really want to see in Cap 3
TopCat89 - 7/22/2014, 1:53 PM
Interesting idea, but wouldn't want to watch an entire movie based off it.

Reminded me of Hugo Strange's obsession...

DrKinsolving - 7/22/2014, 1:54 PM
@isee

Iron Man 3 definitely needed some AC/DC and Black Sabbath
MrMartinMarvel - 7/22/2014, 1:54 PM
That's good, it leaves more room for this guy…

Civil War!!!!
EzioKenway1225 - 7/22/2014, 2:01 PM
we will never get Civil War onscreen imo or not anytime soon cause they still arent enough heroes in the MCU for it and plus that story has alot to do with secret identities and if u think about it, none of the heroes in the MCU so far have one
JillyMcBeam - 7/22/2014, 2:02 PM
Somewhere in Michigan a Gusto touches himself every time Pasto comments first.
DrKinsolving - 7/22/2014, 2:03 PM
@EzioKenway1225

True, I wish they would explore secret identities more in the MCU

@DrKingsolving

definitely, it would have felt more like part of the trilogy. Instead we got weird voiceover from Tony that was never in the previous movies :(
dmm5 - 7/22/2014, 2:07 PM
Imagine in Iron Man 3 Tony giving a tour of the Hall of Armor revealing the Iron Legion with AC/DC's Thunderstruck! :D

The psychotic Cap and Bucky would have been a lot of fun. Both took the ss serum without the Vida rays which made them anti-semetic and racist beating up blacks in Harlem to draw out Cap and his new partner the Falcon. He and Bucky were both stronger than Cap but in the end they were defeated and refrozen.
EzioKenway1225 - 7/22/2014, 2:10 PM
Almazing-i really like ya buddy but its not gonna happen, sorry

Drinsolving-i think thats where Daredevil comes in
MercSoul - 7/22/2014, 2:15 PM

Crabnado - 7/22/2014, 2:29 PM
that just leaves room for Nuke or US Agent.
JackSass - 7/22/2014, 2:31 PM
I always wondered about that, but I never thought for a second that there would be a movie appearance.
Omarvls - 7/22/2014, 2:31 PM
Russo Boys need to make an EPIC Cap 3
If Marvel intends to compete with Dawn of Justice
FerFogs - 7/22/2014, 2:32 PM
Good.

Would screw the whole de-freezing weight.
Barchiel - 7/22/2014, 2:33 PM
It's kinda like people thinking that Thanos will be the villain of Avengers 3 lol.

Fools.
Kurban - 7/22/2014, 2:33 PM

Absolutely agree. Interesting idea, but it should be a One-Shot. It shouldn't be the main focus of a Cap movie. Hell, set it in the 1950s if you want. It'd make sense.
MarkV - 7/22/2014, 2:35 PM
um, yeah, no
Joe6Pack74 - 7/22/2014, 2:36 PM
I think in CA3 Cap should fight communist teachers unions and destroy common core. He should also smack people on welfare across the mouth.
MrBlackjack - 7/22/2014, 2:37 PM
I didn't know people thought he was going to actually be the villain.
Pasto - 7/22/2014, 2:37 PM
Joe6Pack72, our darling red-blooded american man.
Marvel1997 - 7/22/2014, 2:46 PM
Would anyone here also wanna see Grim Reaper alongside Hydra like Earths Mightiest Heroes?
Reclaimer - 7/22/2014, 2:53 PM
I've always thought MODOK played by Peter Dinklage would be a great villain for a third film, furthering the conspiracy, moving Cap into cyber-warfare and just by simply not being a mirror reflection of Cap himself.
SuperCat - 7/22/2014, 2:56 PM
People really thought he'd be a villian? Goofy character.
Dunejedi - 7/22/2014, 2:58 PM
As soon as they're done with Cap 3, I want Markus and McFeeley to get to work on Black Panther. One of them can take a nap and the other can have a sandwich then, BACK TO WORK!!!
