EXCLUSIVE: CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 Writers Share Thoughts On Potential Future Villains

While they don't reveal who we'll see in Captain America 3, Captain America: The Winter Soldier writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely do share their thoughts on why some villains are harder to adapt than others, naming one specific example before revealing one they'd love to introduce...

When I managed to speak briefly with the writers of Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and 2016's Captain America 3 earlier this week, I made sure to ask which villains they would like to introduce in a future movie. They obviously couldn't say too much, but did reveal one character they're not sure we'll ever see on the big screen and another that at least one of them would be interested in introducing...if they can ever find a way to make it work in the tone established in this particular corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Christopher Markus: That's a little tricky because some of them are theoretically very good. Some of them have great concepts but are really tough to pull off visually. Like Flag-Smasher who wants to destroy nations, and that's a terrorist and seems like a guy you could work with, but he literally has a cape and flies on flying skies, and then you're like, 'Ok, do we take away everything?' and then he's just a guy and we're not fully portraying the character. They're tricky to bring across. I always wanted to do MODOK., but it seems like we're leaving our grounded political arena way behind when you've got a giant floating head on a rocket chair.

Stephen McFeely: Exactly!

Christopher Markus: I'll do it one day, I'm telling you people!

It was clear talking to these guys that they love comic books and are very enthusiastic about the character and his supporting cast. Be sure to come back later this week for the full interview with the screenwriting duo as they talk about not using the Red Skull in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, whether or not Bucky had regained his memories by the end of that movie, their thoughts on deleted scenes, not backing down from Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and much more.

Captain America's villains aren't exactly the most exciting, but I have faith that these guys can make the villains very interesting for Cap 3, just like Pierce and Winter Soldier were.
Pasto - 7/23/2014, 1:49 PM
Could've sworn Abary asked you to make an article about the Red Skull...

YOU HAD ONE JOB, WILDING!
marvel72 - 7/23/2014, 1:53 PM
give us baron zemo, red skull, baron von strucker & crossbones.flag smasher would great to see as well.
RetroFit - 7/23/2014, 1:55 PM
All they had to do was introduce Baron Zemo in the 1st movie and have Cap destroy him. Then they could have trotted out BOTH Red Skull and Baron Zemo (son) at any point in the future. Now it makes ZERO sense to introduce Baron Zemo. And he's my favourite Cap villain of all time.
Omarvls - 7/23/2014, 1:55 PM
Make CAP 3 EPIC

I want to finally see Cap

1. His Chain Mail/Dragon Scale battle armor with his winged helmet
2. going into battle on a Sky-Cycle
3. Take his fighting from Winter Solider and multiply it by 10
TChalla - 7/23/2014, 1:56 PM
Nice! Can't wait for the full interview!

ANY Character from a comic, regardless of how fantastical they are in the comics, can be adapted to the screen if done with a innovation and Ingenuity.

Including MODOK.

We're talking comic book movies here, it's okay to leave the ground.
npamusic - 7/23/2014, 1:57 PM
Baron Zemo people.. and bring back Batroc.
npamusic - 7/23/2014, 1:58 PM
I'd love to have

1. Baron Zemo - Main Villain
2. Crossbones - secondary villain
3. Batroc the Leaper as a third.
Klone - 7/23/2014, 1:59 PM
[frick]ing Zemo.
Nomis - 7/23/2014, 1:59 PM
And I would love to see Baron Blood vs.Cap.

MightOfMagneto - 7/23/2014, 2:01 PM

They will Nolanize them too.. Just like what they did to falcon and zola.

It's not a bad thing anyway.

Try pleasing the fanboys too much and you end up with Cap looking like a cosplayer in the Avengers.

They taught Whedon a valuable lesson with the Winter Soldier.
Objectivelybiased - 7/23/2014, 2:02 PM
Eh, already introduced is Crossbones, Winter Soldier, Red Skull, and Baron Von Strucker maybe. All of which are floating around the MCU in one way or another. I just think if they focus on the first three and add maybe one more henchman type villain ...the story will be great. This rings especially true if they just do the natural progression from the last two films and the Avengers films with Cap becoming more of a symbol for national security in some way and leader of the Avengers (blind speculation based on nothing though I expect at the end of Avengers 2 for Cap to either be seen as a hero OR a terrorist ...and Stark to be on the other side. I am more apt to believe that Stark would be seen as the villain at the end of AOU), Rumlo seeking revenge, Bucky still finding out who he is, Steve and Agent 13 relationship going deeper, Sam Wilson getting more hero time as the Falcon, and the Red Skull somehow resurfacing. You do not need to add much except further escalation of the great story already being told ...and leading up towards what is probably the best way to end the trilogy: Cap dying (supposedly), Bucky or Sam taking the shield for the time being, and everything just being super bleak going into A3.

I am sure they will do fine without a brand new big baddy ...unless they add Dough Boy.

I came here just for the red letter on the title.
ScionStorm - 7/23/2014, 2:03 PM
Baron Zemo already! Let Agent Carter fill in some blanks. Then Zemo all over Cap 3 so we can have a Thunderbolts movie/Netflix series. Oh yeah, and... we all know Zola survived. Guy that smart does risk something like that unless he has an exit strategy. In mind, he's already transended death.
MrMartinMarvel - 7/23/2014, 2:05 PM
No need to over think it, just do Baron Zemo. BOOM, done. It would be cool though if they did something with at least the concept of Flag-Smasher, maybe they could have an anti-patriotism terrorist group called "The Flag Smashers" or something like that.
patrat18 - 7/23/2014, 2:05 PM
Zemo or we riot.
Gandhi - 7/23/2014, 2:06 PM
Here's your plot twist:

On Cap3 Steve discovers that his parents were really illegal immigrants from Germany, he is not really an US citizen. How about that?
ScionStorm - 7/23/2014, 2:06 PM
@Nomis I was hoping Baron Blood would make an appearance on Agent Carter.

Captain America has probably got one of the best rogue galleries out of the avengers.

There is a lot to choose from.

But I think Baron Zemo would easily be the best choice.
0megaDaGod - 7/23/2014, 2:10 PM
Dandy - 7/23/2014, 2:10 PM
Of course we'll almost definitely get Crossbones back as a villain again and Winter Soldier will likely play more on an Anti-hero role.
0megaDaGod - 7/23/2014, 2:11 PM
ScionStorm - 7/23/2014, 2:12 PM
@MrMartinMarvel Flagsmasher as a terrorist in grey padded military-grade suit and black homemade cowl to mask his identity. At some point in the movie he attaches a ruined flag over his shoulders, paints it black and appears on broadcast with it slung over his shoulder. He ditches it in his fight against Cap.
GliderMan - 7/23/2014, 2:13 PM
There's so many villains that would work!!
DrKinsolving - 7/23/2014, 2:17 PM
I don't know, Baron Zemo, Doctor Faustus, Crossbones....

I think they should keep Falcon and Widow in the 3rd one too, it'll be cool to see what happens after Avengers: AOU
MrMartinMarvel - 7/23/2014, 2:18 PM
@ScionStorm That could work too, but they said that they didn't want to make him a powerless terrorist, because then they wouldn't be entirely representing the character. Then again making him into a terrorist group is probably just as bad, but still. lol
mmadadamm - 7/23/2014, 2:19 PM
baron zemo with viper and crossbones as his right hands then bring back redskull for cap america 4
deepee3 - 7/23/2014, 2:20 PM
So disappointing to read their comments. The last thing I want MCU movies is to be stunted by the need to 'ground' the characters. Flag Smasher doesn't have to fly about on skis. MODOK can be completely terrifying and visually gripping. Hopefully these guys can shake off this need to hamper their imaginations.

We need fun and fantasy in these movies.

Stop being so damn wimpy.
mmadadamm - 7/23/2014, 2:20 PM
get rid of widow her character takes up too much screentime, i'd rather see mrs. marvel or janet
DrKinsolving - 7/23/2014, 2:21 PM
Does Marvel have the rights to Taskmaster?

Ragnaroknroll - 7/23/2014, 2:22 PM
It makes me happy to hear them talk about MODOK. I hope we get to see him some day. But beyond that yeah Crossbones (obviously), Zemo, Faustus, Zola, Batroc, Madame Hydra, and bring back the Red Skull already. They've got loads to work with - for several more movies actually.
Nomis - 7/23/2014, 2:22 PM
@ ScionStorm - That could work since she's British.

And hopefully Union Jack would make an appearance on her show.
ScionStorm - 7/23/2014, 2:23 PM
I still want the Dell Rusk story at some point. That would be the best way to return Red Skull to the MCU, showing that he has returned to earth for a while now, quietly gathering power Stateside under a new identity, silently watching the downfall of SHIELD at the hands of his old adversary, spectating the exposure of his old organization. Smirking to himself, the leak he supplied, the suspicions he infused on his national defense meetings with Fury. It was time for his old friends to come out of the shadows. They just needed a little push.
Ragnaroknroll - 7/23/2014, 2:24 PM
@deepee3 - I agree with you but I think eventually we will see MODOK. The desire is obviously there. They just need to come up with the right way to introduce him.
Nixaliz - 7/23/2014, 2:24 PM
They could show him killing Zemo in a flashback
Ragnaroknroll - 7/23/2014, 2:24 PM
I wish Weaving wasn't such a snob about coming back as the Red Skull. I guess he'd rather voice Megatron for Bayformers.
