BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Now Looks Set To Open With $90 Million

Guardians of the Galaxy broke records last night with the biggest Thursday opening of 2014, and the latest tracking info and numbers indicate that the James Gunn helmed movie will in fact open to upwards of $90 million, not the originally expected $65 million. Read on for details!

Guardians of the Galaxy looks like a $250 million movie, but with a production budget of only $170 million, Marvel Studios look set to make a very well-deserved profit on James Gunn's superb movie (Kevin Feige and Disney execs clearly realised that they had something special on their hands, hence why they gave a sequel the greenlight at this past weekend's San Diego Comic-Con). Initial estimations had Guardians of the Galaxy opening with $65 million, or $70 million if lucky. Well, the movie - which isn't a sequel and features characters that even die-hard comic book fans aren't overly familiar with - is exceeding expectations, and will have no trouble beating The Bourne Ultimatum's previous August record of $69.3 million. $90 million is now the expected number (after taking around $36 million today), a huge debut for a movie like this in a month where many blockbusters fail to find their footing. Dad wants to wait until tomorrow to see it in IMAX 3D.

Can't stop won't stop.
TheAmbassador - 8/1/2014, 1:35 PM
Figured it would. IMAX 3D was like 19 bucks, but this was the first time I felt like it was worth every penny. I left Cap2 and DOFP wishing I hadn't bothered with it.

Going again tomorrow night
AlexanderLykins - 8/1/2014, 1:36 PM
Also, I just purchased the art of the movie book. My first from the MCU.
McNyagano - 8/1/2014, 1:36 PM
I'm going with 15 people from work tomorrow after work. Beats going to the pub after work.
HurricaneXavier - 8/1/2014, 1:36 PM
Great movie, deserves it.
DrKinsolving - 8/1/2014, 1:37 PM
Great News!! I have to wait until Tuesday

batz11 - 8/1/2014, 1:38 PM
Crazy! I've already seen it twice...if you have a chance to see it in IMAX 3D, WELL WORTH IT! Highly recommend, saw in plain 2D too, IMAX was MUCH better!
EzioKenway1225 - 8/1/2014, 1:39 PM
i am doing the carlton dance right now

charlie2094 - 8/1/2014, 1:39 PM
Impressive numbers!

When you consider even Cap 1 and Thor 1 opened with about $65, $90 million + amazing reviews is a fantastic start to the franchise, perform more like Iron Man.

Haven't seen it yet, but looks like it deserves it

@McNyagano

I went to Germany in the winter, and you can drink beer at the Theatre, really wish they would bring that to the USA, haha
TheAmbassador - 8/1/2014, 1:41 PM
@McNyagano

Do both! I had two 22oz "pints" before I saw this in IMAX 3D, and it was quite enjoyable :)

localsonlymills - 8/1/2014, 1:41 PM
I really didn't see this big of an opening coming haha but I love it! Thoroughly enjoyed this film.

Also I'm impressed they were able to make this on a $170 mil budget. Could've easily gone north of $200 mil
EzioKenway1225 - 8/1/2014, 1:41 PM
man..Chris Pratt has had one hell of a year with The Lego Movie and now GOTG
CaptainObvious - 8/1/2014, 1:41 PM
I really liked GOTG. I'm writing my review right now.

TheAmbassador - 8/1/2014, 1:44 PM
@DrKinsolving

San Diego has 2 theaters I can think of that serve beer, but both are kind of far away from where I am and pretty expensive.

Cheap tip: Bring a female friend with you to the movies, and stuff beer cans in her purse. Cheaper that way

What really got me about this flick is how beautiful and alien it was. Nice to see all those wonderful colorful places. Loved this flick!
ALegendaryPanda - 8/1/2014, 1:46 PM
TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO SAID THIS MOVIE WILL FLOP:

batz11 - 8/1/2014, 1:47 PM
Ezio, if you can see it in IMAX 3D, at least once, do so, it was WAY better than normal 2D or I suspect normal 3D...colors were still bright, but the settings were so amazing in 3D, Gunn didn't do a lot of cheesy "3D tricks" either, used to perfection imo...

0megaDaGod - 8/1/2014, 1:47 PM
@DrKinSolving

You should look up a 'Cinaplex'. They are luxury theaters where they bring you food and drinks in comfy ass recliners. You can get wine, beer and mixed drinks too I believe. Tickets are like 25+ tho
BigMikeReviews - 8/1/2014, 1:48 PM
Real shame it wont dethrone this year's biggest opening weekend which ironically enough belongs to the years worst film: Transformers 4
TheDude - 8/1/2014, 1:49 PM
Question.... So is Nathan Fillion the voice of Howard the Duck?
0megaDaGod - 8/1/2014, 1:50 PM
@ALegendaryPanda

Also, I see Bender is wasting no time trolling up a storm

Apparently...

Humperdink - 8/1/2014, 1:51 PM
Wow.
Well good job Gunn.

I actually loved Slither and I'm glad the guy had his big shot at the mainstream and it worked.

Hats off to ya.
EzioKenway1225 - 8/1/2014, 1:51 PM

@Omega

0megaDaGod - 8/1/2014, 1:53 PM
I like how they said 'You're Welcome' before we thanked them, with full knowledge that we were gonna thank them once we saw the damn movie and loved it

Cocky bastards
DrDoom - 8/1/2014, 1:53 PM
The Marvel brand is unstoppable.

DrKinsolving - 8/1/2014, 1:53 PM
@TheAmbassador

Hahaha, True, aren't that what purse's are for

@0megaDaGod

Nice, thanks, I'll check it out, I've heard that they serve food, didn't know drinks, but I'm sure it won't compare to the prices in Germany, everything was so much cheaper over there
