BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY To Stay At #1 During Labor Day Weekend

Guardians of the Galaxy opened at #1, took a couple of weeks off, and then regained the top spot. Well, the James Gunn helmed sequel now looks set to rule the Labor Day holiday in North America as Rocket Raccoon and the gang take aim at a very impressive fifth weekend...

This summer has not been good in North America in terms of box office takings, but that's working well for Guardians of the Galaxy as it looks set to take advantage of a quiet August by storming to the #1 spot again this weekend. The movie has been pegged as the clear winner of the Labor Day weekend, and after taking $3.5 million today, it looks set to earn $19 million in total during its fifth week of release. The Marvel Studios movie faces little competition from The November Man (starring Pierce Brosnan) which will open in second with $15 million. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles meanwhile is set to take third place with around $13 million. Variety's report doesn't even mention Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, so that one is sitting firmly in "flop" territory right now. Guardians of the Galaxy should have $277 million on Labor Day, and it has already topped Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the year's highest grossing release. It should also be the first to surpass $300 million, and saves 2014 from being the first year that North America hasn't had a movie which has earned over $300 million since 2000. What are you seeing this weekend?

Let's all have a moment of silence please and remember all of the ignorant troll comments in the past saying that this would have been the end for Marvel Studios, and would have bombed because there is a talking tree and raccoon that no one knows about.... :)

Disney overhype and no competition is the only reason this movie is doing well.

Friday Update #2: Early reports indicate that Guardians of the Galaxy is on pace for a $19 million 4-day Labor Day weekend, and possibly a bit more as the holiday frame unfolds. The Disney/Marvel pic will overtake Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the year's top grossing domestic release today (Friday).

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is pacing for a $16 million extended weekend. The film remains a solid choice for families, a perfect recipe for the holiday.

Universal's As Above So Below is on track for a $12 million 4-day opening after its $470,000 Thursday night start.

Meanwhile, The November Man will likely end up around $11.5 million Friday through Monday. The Pierce Brosnan flick earned $1.7 million in its first two days this week, setting it up for a 6-day bow around $13.2 million.

Now all I have to do is sit back and wait for the MoS fanboys to start spouting their hate over GotG...

I present to you a more manly
Amazing512 - 8/29/2014, 7:00 PM
My two most anticipated comic book films of the next few years are probably Avengers: Age of Ultron and GOTG 2.
DoubleD - 8/29/2014, 7:00 PM

@DoubleD; We all thought MAN OF STEEL would hit $300M, but it didn't. Don't count your chickens before they hatch.
HurricaneXavier - 8/29/2014, 7:03 PM
Maybe Man of Steel would of hit its numbers if it deserved to.

Don't get me wrong, I like the movie, it just wasn't as great as I was hoping.
Starfox - 8/29/2014, 7:03 PM
I need to go see this again.
