BOX OFFICE: As Summer Ends, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Wins With $281 Million

The summer season for movies is officially at an end, as is the Labour Day weekend. Guardians of the Galaxy has emerged as the clear winner, and with little to no competition next weekend, the Marvel Studios movie may remain on top. Hit the jump for the latest details!

Deadline have the latest numbers for the Labour Day weekend, and while this summer's box office takings are down 14.6% from last year, Guardians of the Galaxy came out on top with an impressive $22.9 million from the four day holiday and a whopping $281 million since opening last month. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles performed pretty well this summer too with a total of $166.3 million, but you have to remember that just because the summer is over, neither of these movies will be leaving theatres any time soon. Marvel's latest movie is currently the highest grossing release of 2014 domestically, and some believe it will pass $320 million by the end of its run. Next weekend should help as it faces competition from only The Identical, a pretty crummy sounding movie starring Ray Liotta about what would have happened if Elvis's twin brother had survived. Good luck!

It's moments like these that make me believe that the movie-going public is changing for the better. But then I see them doing everything in their power to make sure TMNT outgrosses How to Train Your Dragon 2 domestically.

Baby steps, I guess.
