Spider-Man has been a HUGE part of my childhood. He's not my favorite superhero just because of his powers and his abilities, but the troubles that he goes through everyday. Trouble in highschool, looking for a job, trying to balance his personal life as well as his superhero life. I can realate to most of those. Spider-Man is really an everyday person, like us. He's a guy who has problems we can relate to. So that's what makes him my #1 superhero. So, thank you, Mr. Stan Lee for creating a character who not only is a BIG part of my childhood, but he's also the character that motivated me to become a comic book writer. Thank you again. :)

Stay EPIC, my friends!

It couldn't really be anyone else! Spiderman has been one of the tent pole comic characters since his conception.

Oh, and lets not forget Mr. Steve Ditko, too. He also helped created Spidey. :)

The FF is his greatest creation! WTF is going on here! It was the success of the FF, AND ONLY the success of FF that gave him the impetus to EVEN STAY in the comic book industry. He was going to bale if the FF failed.

The FF by a long shot! Without the Fantastic Four , there is no 'Stan- the- man'! C'mon! ( Spider-man is 2nd)

Spidey made an impact on the way that people viewed literary teenagers, though. I know that Johnny Storm helped break the stereotype, but Peter was the one to completely shatter it.

headlopper - 12/30/2011, 1:34 PM
@Intruder- True. Stan made hero's for the ' for the real world'. He put them in our cities , with our problems- i.e. family issues, addiction challenges, personal insecurities, family deaths, unemployment, social prejudice, turning green and huge then trashing a city(joking), etc...

That's why Marvel character's are so much more relatible , I mean how many people here are from Krypton or are a billionare's kid who's parents got murdered in an alley?

Just sayin'.

I met and assisted Stan at the Baltimore Comic-Con last year...the man is EVERYTHING that you want him to be..and MORE :)

And to be absolutely fair:
Stanley Martin Lieber's greatest creation was Stan Lee

Okay guys, here is the old guy revealing himself. I bought Amazing Fantasy which had Steve Ditko's hand all over it for the few issues it was out there before Spiderman. The stories were reminiscent of the old Twilight Zone TV series and I was really into that stuff back then. Spiderman was brought on to help sales of Amazing Fantasy since I guess I was one of the few who liked the former format. It was so wildly successful, that Spiderman #1 soon followed. I really love me some Stan Lee, but Steve Ditko has to get major nod on this one in creating Spiderman.

For my money, Stan re-ignited the comic books back in the early 60's with the Fantastic Four introduction. I am a DC fan also (figure that, someone who likes both), but, quite frankly, the DC stuff in those days was pretty lame until Stan came along with Marvel and made the super heroes human beings with emotions and flaws instead of perfect little solders. The Fantastic Four under Stan's direction was first comic to represent that refreshing change. So my vote is split between Spiderman as the most recognizable, but Ditko must share in that fame. Give Stan 100% for the Fantastic Four intro and the great comics and characters that soon followed. Stan, you are the man. Nuff said.

Characters mean nothing, what writers do with characters means everything. So saying either Marvel of DC is "better" in any way shape or form is redundant imo. Obviously you can prefer to read about certain characters over others but both companies have produced awesome and rubbish stories based around every character in their stable.

Anyway, yes Spidey was always a clear winner (I voted for Daredevil myself) but he deserves it.. because this great character has had some of best writers around him for many years.

@Intruder

"Haha.. funny, because I only started appreciating Spider-Man, X-Men and Marvel in general right when I started hitting puberty. lol

Uber fans of Batman and Superman are still children at heart, it's what the geek community refers to as "manchilds". ;)"

By older, I meant adulthood. Hitting puberty is still very young. I'm not saying liking Spider-man makes you immature. Personally, I just lost interest the older I became. Peter Peter is forever a teenager so I stopped relating to him the way I used to.

Superman and Batman have lasting appeal because they represent ideals and virtues.

What I like about Spider-man is that he's one of the few heroes that makes not flying more fun. And he's a classic superhero. In the movies, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Captain America aren't really superheroes as an occupation the way that Superman, Batman, or Spider-man are with their alter-egos.

SPIDER-MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not surprising though. Why was this poll even made? Seriously, everyone knows it's Spider-Man.
SageMode
SageMode - 12/30/2011, 4:35 PM
Thats why Ive always gravitated more towards Marvel as a whole instead of DC. More grounded, more relatable, more interesting, more complex. DC may have created the Superhero with Superman, but Marvel perfected it with Spider-Man.

I'd still say the Fantastic Four. It's both my favorite and supposed Stan Lee's greatest creation. Without them, I will never be interested in any American comic book.

BUT I understand how people love Spider-Man. I'm not a fan, but I always like everytime that guy makes an appearance. So...it's fair.
