THOR 2 Getting A Last Minute Rewrite From SAVING PRIVATE RYAN Scribe

There's been yet another development in the messy production of the sequel to Kenneth Branagh's 2011 hit. Robert Rodat has been hired by Marvel Studios to rewrite the script for Alan Taylor based on Don Payne's draft. Read on for more.

After Kenneth Branagh decided not to direct THOR 2, Marvel Studios hired Monster helmer Patty Jenkins. The release date was then pushed back to November 2013 and it wasn't too long after that news hit that Jenkins suddenly decided to pull out of the project. After a not particularly long search, the studio settled on Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor to take charge of the production, although it would now appear that there's still some work to do before shooting starts later this year. Deadline reports that Saving Private Ryan scribe Robert Rodat has been hired to rewrite the script for Taylor and is reworking a draft by Don Payne. The reasons for why are unclear, and although this rewrite is taking place at what appears to be a fairly late stage, the writer was named as one of the candidates last December when Marvel's hunt for a new director began. Rodat's other work includes TV series Falling Skies and a rewrite of the critically panned 2008 film 10,000 BC.

JDUKE25 - 1/10/2012, 5:56 PM
Sweet. Just make it longer than 114 minutes...
Ghostfire - 1/10/2012, 5:58 PM
Indeed this is good news.

@kurekurcubic
Pre-production last minute wise.
PantherX - 1/10/2012, 6:02 PM
Dun dun duuuun!!

It can't be too bad though, apparently IM1 didn't even have a script, and look how that turned out.

I know, bad example.
Ghostfire - 1/10/2012, 6:09 PM
@grif
LOL!... "she looks just like my niece!"
SithLord - 1/10/2012, 6:11 PM

Mechagino - 1/10/2012, 6:15 PM
Can someone post a gif of Wolverine when he was in WW2 from X-men Origins? If so, you're awesome.
GUNSMITH - 1/10/2012, 6:18 PM

ScionStorm - 1/10/2012, 6:20 PM

ScionStorm - 1/10/2012, 6:21 PM

golden123 - 1/10/2012, 6:21 PM
@JKM: Ummmm...was that some lame attempt at sarcasm?
Viltrumite - 1/10/2012, 6:26 PM
I'm really hoping this turns out fine, but as it stands, I'm still beyond worried about this movie.
nailbiter111 - 1/10/2012, 6:30 PM
after an AMAZING first act saving private ryan became mediocre.
SuspenseSmith - 1/10/2012, 6:31 PM
As long as this is the last rewrite, we should be good.
SuspenseSmith - 1/10/2012, 6:32 PM
@nailbiter111

So was Thor... perfect match.

I love Thor, but Act I was much stronger than II or III.
golden123 - 1/10/2012, 6:35 PM
@itbegins2005: X-Men: First Class and Green
Lantern proved that anythings possible in the superhero genre.
WellDrawn - 1/10/2012, 6:42 PM
I hope the filmakers now realize that nobody cared about ANYTHING that took place on Earth in Thor 1. The only truly great parts about the first film(aside from a few very funny fish out of water jokes) were the scenes off Earth.
Aside from very brief opening and closing scenes on Earth, the entire second movie should be set entirely in other realms and should revolve around a war on Asgard.

Lots of movies go through this sort of thing and turn out great, lots don't! At this point all we know is that for whatever reason Marvel are unhappy with whatever script draft ..if they even have a full one..on their lap and want a fresh take. No biggy..but coupled with the other problems the movie has had I wouldn't blame a fan for worrying either.
Deschain - 1/10/2012, 6:48 PM
Oh poo, consider the fact that the last few Avenger themed movies have really only been a means to an end (Avengers Assemble).. I really don't think they'll put much though into a sequel... come on now... this one will probably scrape in to rape people of their expendable income just enough to not think we got shafted by a plot written with their eyes closed BOOM!
GUNSMITH - 1/10/2012, 6:49 PM
WHAT WOULD BE COOL: LOKI IMPRISONS JANE FOSTER AND THOR MUST TRAVEL THE NINE REALMS, BATTLE IMMENSE CREATURES AND BEAT IMPOSSIBLE ODDS TO GET HER BACK.
Deschain - 1/10/2012, 6:55 PM
that would be cool Gunsmith.. not gonna happen tho
tazmaniak - 1/10/2012, 7:00 PM
This was to be expected.Whenever a new director is brought onto a film, he/she will want to put their own stamp or vision on the film. And that means giving the script some rewrites, usually with a new writer.
Ryguy88 - 1/10/2012, 7:02 PM
'Some might see "messy" but I see "fine tuning".'

-sincerely, Marvelite
CaptainTall - 1/10/2012, 7:18 PM
Oooo, I love Saving Private Ryan.
95 - 1/10/2012, 7:24 PM
I hope it actually turns out to be a good movie.
redleaf - 1/10/2012, 7:28 PM
Yeah, because you'd lose and end up banned again. LOL
HKFanatic - 1/10/2012, 7:30 PM
Every movie gets rewritten, most of these superhero flicks have 4-5 writers attached by the time they wind up on the screen. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're bad. Usually it depends on if the director has a compelling vision for the hero. :]
batmanrises - 1/10/2012, 7:36 PM
Heh Intruder with the kid gloves! lol

Marvel's cost cutting tactics better not sink this movie damn it....
vtopa - 1/10/2012, 7:39 PM
Messy.
redleaf - 1/10/2012, 7:52 PM
Whatever makes you feel better. I guess your time-out still didn't make you a big boy. lol
redleaf - 1/10/2012, 7:59 PM
She said your jokes need to grow up. lol
ckal - 1/10/2012, 8:05 PM
No shit they hired someone to rewrite Don Payne's script! He sucks! Marvel was damn crazy to let him write it by himself to begin with.

RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 1/10/2012, 8:05 PM
They need more toys.
Ryguy88 - 1/10/2012, 8:09 PM
Intruder, you seem extra irked today, is it because TDKR is already ahead of The Avengers at the box office?
Ryguy88 - 1/10/2012, 8:16 PM
'This film will be better because of Alan Taylor and Rob Rodat jumping on board.'

How do you know what's going to happen?
redleaf - 1/10/2012, 8:17 PM
He has a lot of estrogen. It's important not to take him seriously, kind of like a wife. It's okay Intruder. They're fine tuning. Thor 2 will better than TDKR and any other Nolan movie.
Ryguy88 - 1/10/2012, 8:19 PM
Grumpy old man syndrome does come from too much estrogen.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 1/10/2012, 8:22 PM
Perhaps Patty wasn't down with any of the script changes and didn't want to make the movie Marvel wants. Now that Marvel has a yes man for a directer, they can do whatever the heck they want with the script.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 1/10/2012, 8:43 PM
I just get a very Tim Story vibe from him. This guy has been stuck in television for the past 15 years, and he finally has his chance at a big budget motion picture. He isn't going to cause the kind of trouble for a studio that a more respected and seasoned director might. He doesn't have as much clout as a Kenneth Branagh, thus he won't make ridiculous demands or want the story re written. He will make the movie Marvel wants because this could be his launching pad.

Again, I'm in the minority but I think this gets pushed back indefinitely until the final receipts from the Avengers are in. I think the only sequel that is a stone cold lock to get made is Iron Man 3.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 1/10/2012, 8:46 PM
I'm not saying the movie will be terrible, I'm just saying I see Taylor as the kind of guy that doesn't want to piss the studio off because he finally has his chance, and he doesn't want to blow it. I thought the original Thor is the second best movie Marvel made behind Iron Man, and I hope they don't give us a rushed remake for the sake of a remake.

If the script isn't good, just wait. There is no rush. Who's to say you can't have Iron Man 3, then make an Avengers 2, then revisit Thor 2 after that. Everything about this movie just gives me a bad feeling, from the director changes, Natalie Portman saying she might not be down for a sequel, to yet more script rewrites.
Linta - 1/10/2012, 8:46 PM
hell yes, now bring on the Surtur.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 1/10/2012, 8:57 PM
I think Jenkins and Branagh did. Even Favreau had some, remember he is the reason RDJ got the role of Iron Man. He wouldn't have done it, if not for RDJ. So far Marvel has done well with choosing their directors.

But like I said my only concern with this movie, is making one for the sake of making it. With Thor there is no room for error. If the next movie ends up like Green Lantern you will not see another Thor solo movie for a long, long time. He's not a franchise like Spiderman or Batman, that can withstand a terrible movie because they can reboot it. He's just not a popular enough character.

Anyway, I just hope if everything is not perfect that reasonable heads will prevail and they shelve this until everything is perfect. I'm not saying it will take until 2016, but if it needs to be pushed back a year, year and half to make everything perfect then so be it. Like you say with Batman you don't like what you have seen, I just haven't liked what I heard with a Thor sequel. But I will be glad to eat my words if I am wrong.
80sFace - 1/10/2012, 9:13 PM
They rewrite scripts 15-20 times before the shoot and rewrite during the shoot so it's all good.

Thor 2 -- Jane dies so Thor has to go to Hela to make a deal to bring her back to the world of the living. She sends him on task, to bring something back. That's all I got.

RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 1/10/2012, 9:25 PM
I agree, I don't think that everyone is aware of how big The Avengers will be Intruder. But having said that, once the receipts come back I think they will re shuffle the deck, and prioritize everything to revolve around the Avengers franchise which I firmly believe will be shot back to back. I don't think anything will be set in stone until mid to late summer. I know these properties have release dates, but us comic book movie fans know that is all relative. A lot can change, especially after you find out you have on of the very few, billion dollar franchises on your hands.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 1/10/2012, 9:27 PM
But all I ask of Marvel is don't stretch yourselves too thin. I would rather see quality over quantity. I can wait 3 years or more for well made sequels. Don't shove them down my throat for the sake of making a quick buck.
Talontd - 1/10/2012, 10:23 PM
I'm more concerned that Rodat dropped off the face of the earth after Saving Private Ryan & The Patriot, then came back...10 years later...for Falling Skies?? I kinda dig Falling Skies, but the writing isn't really stellar...

...dunno, maybe it was personal, but he took off just as he was getting hot. Marvel consistently demonstrates extremely shrewd business tactics. It may pay off, may not, only time will tell...but it's certainly not alarming. A new director was just brought on, rewrites are inevitable. Scooping up an obviously talented writer who seems to be just getting his feet wet in the industry again...that's just clever.

Let's just hope he's knocked all the rust off...
Bluestreak - 1/10/2012, 11:26 PM
Um, rewrites usually go on right up until when shooting starts. I can;t see how a rewrite now is "last minute"
