Deadline reports that Paramount has taken the somewhat unprecedented action of starting an advertising campaign for Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Why? Well, the movie has received three nominations at the 2012 Academy Awards for Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Visual Effects. It is not usual for studios to finance TV spots for films nominated for the more prestigious gongs such as Best Picture, but the fact that this multi billion dollar franchise is an important part of their future plans may go some way in explaining this decision. Transformers was also nominated for the three awards listed above but missed out on them all, while the follow up, Revenge of the Fallen failed to nab the Oscar for its single nod in the Sound Mixing category.

A Paramount spokesman told the site the following: "As you know the Academy is comprised of many branches representing the various disciplines in the filmmaking arena. Because not everyone may be an expert in sound or visual effects, we hope that this spot will encourage voters to carefully consider their choices and take into consideration the craftsmanship of each category when voting…this is the culmination of years of hard work creating cinematic sounds and images that are now iconic – we wanted a form of Academy outreach that did that work justice and we simply felt that to see and hear it was very important." HelaGood - 2/2/2012, 3:31 PM
BWAAAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA!!

yeah... NOT worthy
nowtheresaBATman - 2/2/2012, 3:34 PM
Micheal Bay should win an Oscar for this! And as it's handed to him have it explode in his face!
marvel72 - 2/2/2012, 3:34 PM
it should go to rise of the planet of the apes but saying that transformers 3 would be a worthy winner.
HelaGood - 2/2/2012, 3:35 PM
where's the thumbs down button...???
Lawliet - 2/2/2012, 3:36 PM
bumblebee for non-talking Autobot!
forthesakeofnow - 2/2/2012, 3:39 PM
how exactly is this not worthy?

the movie was awfully directed, written, acted and edited but its difficult to fault it on the three specific categories it has been nominated for.
HelaGood - 2/2/2012, 3:41 PM
@forthesakeofnow well...the film DID have sound... and yes there were visual effects... but none of those elements were/are award worthy. slapped together. big mess. sloppy work. NOT worthy.
forthesakeofnow - 2/2/2012, 3:42 PM
@teabag thank you at least someone else isnt in misplaced hate-mode
Ranger14 - 2/2/2012, 3:43 PM
That's the thing about the Oscars, it isn't about who or what's the best. It's about who promotes and spends the most promoting their nomination. It's more political than anything, though Teabag does have a point.
forthesakeofnow - 2/2/2012, 3:43 PM
@helagood

id argue the visual effects where incredibly well done and award worthy, for the 6 frames they were allowed to be on screen for each shot.
Cerebro - 2/2/2012, 3:47 PM
Didn,t know their was an Oscar for Biggest Turd.
HelaGood - 2/2/2012, 3:47 PM
@Ranger14 agreed on the politics/money point.

@forthesakeofnow although i disagree, i respect your opinion.
forthesakeofnow - 2/2/2012, 3:47 PM
it does make me laugh that drive is nominated for sound editing and moneyball for sound mixing and yet the rest of the nominees overlap perfectly. id like to sit down with the voters and find out their reasons for that
forthesakeofnow - 2/2/2012, 3:49 PM
@helagood

cheers, all im saying in that end is that its difficult to argue the technical quality of the sound and visual effects, maybe in a movie with a little more artistry to it those nominations might seem more worthy
forthesakeofnow - 2/2/2012, 3:52 PM
@teabag

when im king im going to force bay to make a 90 minute transformers film, with no dialogue apart from "NOOOOOOOOOO" and no non-diagetic sound or music, and its going to be one continous take like Sokurov's "Russian Ark" lol
HelaGood - 2/2/2012, 3:53 PM
@forthesakeofnow point taken. quality is also subjective. so awards of any kind boil down to personal taste, or politics and money. there is truly no pure scale for quality. you can see that on every thread here when you see the Nolanites vs. Marvel battle. everyone is a critic and they are also 100% correct. everyone. ;)
forthesakeofnow - 2/2/2012, 3:54 PM
just one long battle scene with a "the artist" like silent movie/no talking plot going on at the same time in the trenches.
misner89 - 2/2/2012, 3:55 PM
LOL WHERE IS THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN TRAILER 2
Supes17 - 2/2/2012, 3:55 PM
Come on guys, I know that the films had terrible plot structures..
But those robots looked [frick]ing real!
Watching Optimus Prime tear robots to shreds was an etertaining moment at the theater. It had the best visual effects this year.

Planet of the Apes can grab this Oscar with its sequels, but this is the last chance for Transformers.

Well, unless Paramount "convinces" Michael Bay to do a fourth one lol
SebHope - 2/2/2012, 3:56 PM
Isnt it a bit pointless when the final ballots were posted yesterday. No votes are longer accepted so this will make no difference now.
forthesakeofnow - 2/2/2012, 3:56 PM
@helagood

i get ya. religious extremists, be them on the side of marvel or the side of dc, make me glad i dont read comics and arent on here too often, lol
forthesakeofnow - 2/2/2012, 4:00 PM
@gaston

that "NO!" just proves better writing. i much prefered planet of the apes to transformers but i never once saw caeser as real, as so much had been made already about the motion capture tech and how great serkis was. they should have just shut up about it and let us watch the film thinking it was real like we are meant to be allowed to do
BackwardGalaxy - 2/2/2012, 4:05 PM
Nothing about that movie should ever be praised for anything, lest the studio think we want more of it. It makes me sad and I've lost a little bit of my faith in humanity because this franchise was successful despite some of the worst writing and acting I have ever seen in a movie with this kind of budget. All 3 are unwatchable messes and shame on every single one of you that liked any of them.
dahamma - 2/2/2012, 4:10 PM
I would Vote. Why? Because the Artist of the Film did a SUPERB Job with the sound and visuals. Say all you want about the story and editing but the visual and sound artist were on point on this film THEY should be rewarded, not Bay
forthesakeofnow - 2/2/2012, 4:11 PM
@backwardgalaxy

how many of the current highest grossing films have great acting and writing arguably?

Avatar? Titanic? Pirates? Alice?

lord of the rings, toy story and TDK id say, its not like acting and writing often bring in the audiences. like u say its as much a problem with humanity as it is with hollywood
RorMachine - 2/2/2012, 4:13 PM
Yeah I wouldn't say it's unworthy of any of those awards..just everything ELSE about it sucked.
HellsHammer - 2/2/2012, 4:20 PM
theres no arguing that the last cliip of Optimus at the end of that vid is just epic
DarkKnight23 - 2/2/2012, 4:34 PM
How did Transformers not win an oscar for best visual effects? I admit the scripts are questionable at best but I never get tired of watching transforming robots fight.
heisei24 - 2/2/2012, 5:07 PM
I'll vote it for the sake of ILM,not for Bay.
Supes17 - 2/2/2012, 6:02 PM
@ELgUaSoN:
LMFAO! I cracked up with the second pic
TheBigBoss917 - 2/2/2012, 6:16 PM
Is it April 1st already??!?
Godzillafart - 2/2/2012, 6:36 PM
garbage movie that deserved all those nominations.
Wildaniel - 2/2/2012, 7:00 PM
BEST MOVIE EVER!!! BEST TRILOGY EVER!!!

Also I love the score music from all 3 movies, Steve Jablonsky is the MAN!!!
Alvahnomicron - 2/2/2012, 7:25 PM
Gotta agree with many of you. I don't like the Bay TF movies for whatever reasons(they don't matter). Having said that, on the technical end, these have been STUNNING movies. Production design was amazing even though I'm not a fan of the look of the 'bots, sound design was great, and the effects are tippy-top-shelf(except for the final fight at the end of ROF, somethin' weird was goin' on there)...
Just my opinion...
luckylu - 2/2/2012, 7:37 PM
movie might not be too great but damn the visual effects were [frick]ing great.
LinkHall - 2/2/2012, 7:58 PM
I think the first two should have won, but with ROTPOTA I feel apes should win, shoot I wouldn't have been upset if Andy Serkis was nominated...the girl from Mike and Molly was nominated...tell me Andy Serkis didn't do a better job in apes that she did in Bridesmaids.
AutobotCommander84 - 2/2/2012, 8:31 PM
WETA's work on ROTPOTA is the same thing they've been doing for years, ILM's work on DOTM had them puting thousands upon thousands of pieces together to form the driller. If that's not award worthy, I don't know what is.
Gigacrusher45 - 2/2/2012, 10:04 PM
Guess what everyone. I don't care what you think about the films, they took visual and sound effects to the next level. They practically invented sounds and they put so much work into those robots.

The transformations are insane, every single piece of the vehicle moves somewhere, and looks amazing. They got extremely cheated when Transformers 1 lost to a f-ing Polar Bear from the Golden Compass. That was the biggest load of crap I ever saw from the Oscars (among other things)

They deserve it this time around.
AUSSYACE - 2/3/2012, 1:03 AM
His special effects and attention to detail is excellent...
NeoBaggins - 2/3/2012, 1:27 AM
The Transformers films have the best visual FX.
NeoBaggins - 2/3/2012, 3:31 AM
I assume organic is a bigger challenge than inanimate objects. But that just means the industry has it's homework to do with CGI. The organic CGI is still rubbery and wiggly. I love Serkis' work, but at the end of the day, the CGI is pretty standard in Apes. The impressive thing about the film is the Orangutan. At one point I couldn't tellif it was real or not.

Transformers all the way though. In Revenge of the Fallen, the camera pans around Iron Hide and some soldiers as he transforms from truck to robot. The effect is seamless. Blew my [frick]ing mind.
GrayFox1025 - 2/3/2012, 5:39 AM
The fact that Transformers is nominated just proves how much of a joke the Oscars have become

No Andy Serkis? (understandable, but they need to stop being so biased)
No Alan Rickman? Now, that is just wrong

Only good thing about about this years Oscars is that Gary Oldman is FINALLY nominated, but why the [frick] has it taken so long for him to get nominated?
NeoBaggins - 2/3/2012, 6:59 AM
When Caesar was swinging around the house, the CGI was shitty there too.

And this isn't exactly an FX problem, but since when is San Fransisco populated with about 11 people?
