Michael Shannon Talks MAN OF STEEL; Compares Zack Snyder To Martin Scorsese

Michael Shannon (General Zod in the upcoming Man of Steel) recently revealed that he has been warned by Warner Bros. to be a little more careful about what he reveals about the secretive Superman reboot. So, talking to The Playlist recently, he made sure to let slip nothing more than praise for the British actor who will don the iconic suit in 2013's Man Of Steel. "Henry [Cavill] is a fantastic Superman, he’s got a little edge to him and he’s smart, clever and I had fun working with him."

However, Shannon also had plenty of good things to say about director Zack Snyder too, best know to comic book movie fans for helming 300 and Watchmen. "I think Zack is the master stylist, visually, I mean he’s up there with Scorsese in my book in terms of visual composition, orchestration, etc." That's quite the compliment! He then went on to finally reveal that, "the whole thing is edgy in a way like when Nolan took over the Batman franchise." Whether this is down to Christopher Nolan's role as producer is unknown, but be sure to sound off with your thoughts below.

STARRING:

Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman
Amy Adams as Lois Lane
Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent
Diane Lane as Martha Kent
Michael Shannon as Zod

RELEASE DATE: June 14th, 2013.

SOLD! This movie is going to be better than any Nolan crap I have had to endure over the last 8 years.

I love Shannon but yeah, comparing Snyder to Scorcese is a bit much.

On a related note, I just watched Take Shelter (starring Michael Shannon) 2 nights ago and it was an excellent, very unsettling movie. Highly recommended.

Snyder being compared to Scorsese?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Oh man I nearly dropped laughing so hard.

I guess after WB told Shannon to stop revealing too much he decided to make it up to them by comparing Hack Snyder to Scorsese.
TheGreenRanger - 2/8/2012, 8:20 AM
Maybe he means SuperMan is now a hipster? Skinny jeans and all.

YAY! Edgy... Lost any hope I still had for this one... *sigh*
RyKnow - 2/8/2012, 8:24 AM
Even though I'm really trying hard to get excited about this movie, this is it's immediate weakness; words I've been hearing from people involved such as dark, edgy and gritty. Yes, it worked wonders for Batman because they're films that need to have that style. Are they trying to make another Batman movie, but replacing Batman with Superman? It's like making The Crow have the same kind of atmosphere and visual presentation as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man - in other words it's wrong.
At least Superman Returns had the right essence, whatever you think of it.

@ RamonSuarez - I absolutely agree with you mate. Well said.
RyKnow - 2/8/2012, 8:27 AM
On a side note, as far as comparing Snyder to Scorsese;

If they were both artists who drew pictures, Scorsese uses freehand and draws from his mind, Snyder uses tracing paper over someone elses work.
Alexandre - 2/8/2012, 8:30 AM
what makes ppl think this is going to be better than anything nolan has ever made, this was in part written by nolan so mind you, we are going to get another film by nolan just directed by another guy
marknjoanna - 2/8/2012, 8:32 AM

SuperFan1980 - 2/8/2012, 8:40 AM
Good Lord! What is up with all the freakin Snyder and Nolan bashing on here??? Give it a chance people! I'm thrilled to see them working together on my favorite hero of and I'm extremely excited to see the results. Henry Cavill seems to be the perfect fit and hopefully this will re establish Superman as THE greatest big screen comic book hero of all time!
rbfn04 - 2/8/2012, 8:44 AM
Sure @Superfan1980 Edgy Superman is the right move to make. Look how coll douchy Supes is in DCnU...
SuperFan1980 - 2/8/2012, 8:50 AM
@Just1Superguy - Yeah, guess that kind of goes without saying. LOL!
TheGreenRanger - 2/8/2012, 8:55 AM
I heard the Avengers are making a cameo in this.
lntrn8 - 2/8/2012, 8:57 AM
And now . . . the visual genius and master stylist, of composition, orchestration directed by Ralph Scorsesee:

Ranger14 - 2/8/2012, 9:02 AM
"Good Lord! What is up with all the freakin Snyder and Nolan bashing on here???"

Sucker Punch alone justifies the Snyder bashing! :-P
Hando99 - 2/8/2012, 9:05 AM
Can people not read between the lines whatsoever? He obviously means that this Superman reboot is more adult, serious and set in the contemporary real world just like Nolan's Batfilms. And the Scorcese comparison? I can see that he means visually they are so original in their own way as well as how they both incorporate music into their films, i think Shannon is just pointing out how they are BOTH epic at creating visualy stunning scenes but they are not similair.
lntrn8 - 2/8/2012, 9:06 AM
Totally unrelated to topic (I think), but related to Supes. Like one point vid trying to make, hope Superman mythos keeps its integrity.

MrReese - 2/8/2012, 9:20 AM
"the whole thing is edgy in a way like when Nolan took over the Batman franchise." SOLD!!!! XD
SkateandDestroy88 - 2/8/2012, 9:21 AM
All right Man of Steel news. It's a shame there aren't gonna connect the universe with this one but,
This movie is gonna be off the hook !!!!!!!
TheGreenRanger - 2/8/2012, 9:22 AM
Intrn: That was the most annoying video. Cool guy with a watered down Zima and loose tie. Dont you ever post again.
McGribble - 2/8/2012, 9:24 AM
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the comparison to Scorcese is based upon his signature story telling style. I do not think he was comparing their bodies of work, but rather the fact that you can instantly tell a movie made by either of the two directors. It is likely why he chose to say "in terms of visual composition, orchestration, etc..."
lntrn8 - 2/8/2012, 9:25 AM

I'm so excited for this movie
batmanrises - 2/8/2012, 9:36 AM
A rush to judgement based on an actor's interview?? Never :P

Fanboys are never satisfied with anything. We get a Superman who has never faced a opponent aside from the Phantom Zone criminals (which to be honest, was limited by the technology of the day) who gave him a real opportunity to cut loose and show why he is the most powerful superhero there is - and here it seems like we're being primed to get an actual example of that and people are jumping the gun thinking this will be "dark and gritty" because of one word one single actor from the movie uses. Ridiculous.
GrayFox1025 - 2/8/2012, 10:59 AM
I think by "edgy" he means that we are going to see superman kick some serious ass, or at least that's what I get from it.

I agree with MrEko, the term edgy is confused with dark and gritty, most likely only because Nolan's name is tied to the film.

CBNerd - 2/8/2012, 11:25 AM
I liked sucker punch...It was mindless entertainment of hot chicks, fighting and explosions at its best.
Nubase - 2/8/2012, 11:40 AM
a few words by shannon and some peeps are worried lol
this movie will deliver us the superman movie we have been waiting for, a action flick, not a emotional flick.

i think the word edgy is good to hear, l would have been more worried if he said emotional.

With the cast of actors that are proven actors in thier own right, the screenplay co written by nolan and produced by nolan added with the visual style of zack zynder who nolan personlly choose himself to direct the movie, hopefully we will get the movie that ALL comic book fans will enjoy.

Thats what we all want don`t we?
blkyank - 2/8/2012, 11:49 AM
My God,all Shannon was saying is that Superman was taking a more edgier tone then the Donner/Singer version then same way Nolan went edgier then Burton.Thats not to suggest that Man of Steel was going to be as edgy as Batman Begins. But once again the Marvel trolls want to jump all over this movie an proclaim it DOA based on snippets of information lifted from interviews with Michael Shannon, the only guy in the MoS production who really has said anything to date. You guys love Marvel, great, but at least wait for the trailer before taking a dump all over this film.
thedude2936 - 2/8/2012, 11:51 AM
First off i want to let it be known im a die hard supes fan and ive been reading the comics since i could pick one up. now with that said i continue to my statement. It's funny to me, when Superman Returns came out everyone was bitching about it being boring and too much like the Donner films(which I've noticed some people on here think is too campy), now that we have a chance to get a more Action packed Superman and a non "campy" story, people are bitching its going to be too dark, or its going to suck because of Suckerpunch, cause it seems Suckerpunch being not good has somehow made people forget about 300 and Watchmen(which I thought was pretty good IMHO) also i agree with MrEko, edgy doesnt necessarily mean dark and gritty like so many of you are jumping to the conclusion of. Also, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster originally intended Supes to be aggressive and taking matters into his own hands to help people out. now as for the realism aspect of it, im pretty damn sure its not going to be batman begins with powers, what i take from Shannon's comment is that the story will be a lot more than superman flying around stopping earthquakes and missiles, instead i believe its going to be superman kicking ass and taking names, much like his golden age counterpart (if he could fly instead of leaping) and his new 52 counterpart, and honestly where is the problem in that? I honestly feel this movie will bring Supes back to the forefront with Batman. also all of you who are wishing that it'll fail (cause i know some of you are) shame on you. How about we wait for a trailer before all of the hating?
marknjoanna - 2/8/2012, 12:06 PM
hey nubase i bet you was excited when superman returns was coming out to and also like me went back and watched superman 1 and 2 to ease the pain i went ahead and bought the box set but still havent put 3 or 4 in lol i just hope this movie dont send me crying back to the box for my superman fix -superman 2 still the best one so far lets hope they beat it
TheRationalOne - 2/8/2012, 12:23 PM
I've been reading this board for a long time, and the one thing I've noticed is that you guys sell out your film makers as soon as they make one movie that isn't up to your standards. Sucker Punch was a bad movie because Snyder tried to write it as well. Cant blame him. If I was constantly directing other peoples stories, I may come up with a few ideas of my own and want to try and make them. Visually, Sucker Punch was fantastic. Story, plot, and scripting, not so much. But Dawn Of The Dead, 300, and Watchmen were all excellent movies. Snyder can direct the F out of a film, he just cant write one for beans. Which he DIDN'T with Superman. If TDKR turns out even moderately worse than the other two, most of you will probably throw Nolan under the bus too. EVERY DIRECTOR HAS A DUD OR TWO.

Not that it matters. Fanboys have tunnel vision and cant remember past the most recent movie. If Superman turns out like Dark Knight, most of you will be lining up to give Snyder a handy.
TheRationalOne - 2/8/2012, 12:37 PM
Ramon, I highly disagree.

I know...you dont care.
xXkryptoniteXx - 2/8/2012, 12:56 PM
Enough praising and enough talk, give us the trailer. Also talk is cheap, I've seen so many talk and praise on set with films that I well not fall for it again. I'll judge onces the movie comes out, and please let it be good and be a superman move I've been waiting for.
RyKnow - 2/8/2012, 2:45 PM
@ Ramon - "I think there is some concern that he'll be able to pull of Chris Nolan script without Nolan's technical brilliance" - That is precisely what's bothered me since Snyder was announced as director. I don't think he's up to it, and his rapidly declining quality of film isn't doing him any favours.

I can't remember who posted that Nolan personally selected Snyder as director (nor can I be arsed to go check) but if you remember, yes, Nolan picked Snyder, but only after 3 other director's* turned the job down, so what does that tell you? Nolan didn't exactly make it a priority to get the script to Snyder.

Anyway, I will go to see the film regardless, although I'm only expecting it to be as good as Ghost Rider, i.e. average. But I want to make it clear, I'm really HOPING that it's gonna be great.

* I can only remember 2 of the three; Robert Zemeckis and Ben Affleck. I'm sure Matt Reeves was in Nolan's crosshairs to direct though.
RyKnow - 2/9/2012, 3:28 AM
@Just1SuperGuy: Well, you get my point though :) (I forgot about Del Toro turning it down). Either way, Snyder wasn't Nolan's first choice.
I forgot Duncan Jones was also considered (he was my preference). That would have been a cracking Superman film; he's a top tier sci-fi director (which I personally think Superman needed) whose previous 2 films were extremely well received, and as the story is co-written by Nolan, it's bound to be multi-layered and complex, something Jones is already well versed in.

AUSSYACE - 2/10/2012, 5:01 AM
Zack Snyder was the BEST choice for this movie...
SUCKER PUNCH was Brilliant...

HENRY CAVILL IS SUPERMAN...
