Joss Whedon Reveals Why He Didn't Use The Skrulls Or Kree In THE AVENGERS

The director confirms that neither the Skrulls or Kree appear in the upcoming movie and reveals why exactly he made the decision not to use an alien race with some established backgrounds, making their identity an even bigger mystery.

With a little over a month to go until Marvel's The Avengers is finally released in cinemas, speculation is still at an all time high when it comes to exactly who or what makes up Loki's mysterious army. Talking to Entertainment Weekly at the SXSW festival, director Joss Whedon has stamped out the Skrull/Kree rumours once and for all, going so far as to reveal why exactly he chose to use neither of them in the film.

"I will say only this: It is not the Kree or the Skrulls. Those two aliens are Marvel mainstays and have enormous backstories. They have a big life of their own that just could not be contained in a film where I already had seven movie stars."

"The Skrulls — they can shape change. That’s a whole thing. I’ve already got Loki. He’s got magic. Once you got magic along with your Iron Man and your Black Widow — it’s a real juggling act."

The reasoning behind Whedon's decision makes sense. Regardless of whether the army which is in the movie ends up being a race from the comic books, would you still like to see either the Skrulls or Kree show up in a sequel? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

STARRING:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Tom Hiddleston as Loki

RELEASE DATE: April 26th, 2012. (UK) May 4th, 2012. (US)

Annihilation wave!!!!! i told you all!!!!
sexfoodcomics - 3/10/2012, 11:47 AM
Thanos has a big part in the Annhilation story line (in the mini series) and uses Annihilus's army for his benefit. it all makes sense. look at the design of the aliens, they look very biomechanical bug looking. especially that huge thing chasing iron man.
sexfoodcomics - 3/10/2012, 11:48 AM
and look at the big blue Gem in lokis staff!!! THanos is using loki to get that gem. he is playing everyone begind the scenes.
antonio - 3/10/2012, 11:48 AM
Skrulls would be great, but not for a first film(they would be misused, imo). In order for them to be properly used, it has to be an event. An infiltration if you will. They've gotta be disguised as someone or some group of people(mainly S.H.I.E.L.D. agents). Shit Nick Fury doesn't even know about.

If they are not Skrulls or Kree and they truly are from the comics, I am gonna go out on a limb and say they are The Atlanteans.
Jobu - 3/10/2012, 11:48 AM
Annihilus? I am really hoping they set up Thanos though.
sosa4693 - 3/10/2012, 11:48 AM
Loki's army is definetley one of the beings from the 9 realms, maybe the frost giants
superotherside - 3/10/2012, 11:49 AM
Finally, hopefully this will put this debated issue to rest... lol... I wonder who it is though... not that it really matters.
TheDickRises - 3/10/2012, 11:49 AM
isn't skrull ff property and own by fox?
Deadpoolican - 3/10/2012, 11:49 AM
i am the alien army
Dev7 - 3/10/2012, 11:49 AM
Damn Whedon is doing ALOT of interviews for Avengers. Avengers better be the biggest and best comic book movie ever with all this talking from Whedon.
BackwardGalaxy - 3/10/2012, 11:53 AM
They are clearly Romulans from the future.
antonio - 3/10/2012, 11:54 AM
@Sosa Loki was trying to destroy Jotunheim so there is no way in hell it could be The Frost Giants.
Seejay - 3/10/2012, 11:56 AM
Perhaps they are frost giants, after all.
sinchsw - 3/10/2012, 11:59 AM
stillillwill - Marvel is spending 300 million on Avengers. WTF are you talking about? Do your research.
dellamorte1872 - 3/10/2012, 12:00 PM
aliens from the "WHEDON" arc on A.XMEN (the ones residing on THE BREAKWORLD)
sinchsw - 3/10/2012, 12:00 PM
Dark Knight Rises = $250 million. But we all have to remember it's about the story and care put into the movie, not just the money. So either way. STFU!
Lert - 3/10/2012, 12:04 PM
Joss news today is throwing himself under the bus!...
finaljustice671 - 3/10/2012, 12:06 PM
Awww weaksauce
arsonjack - 3/10/2012, 12:08 PM
so basically he couldnt be bothered to put any effort and jus went for alien characters that's low key so he would avoid any backlash. not very admirable.
stumbleMaster57 - 3/10/2012, 12:10 PM
lol @JonasWepeel
revloveR - 3/10/2012, 12:11 PM
so, its not because someone else owns the rights to them?
Lert - 3/10/2012, 12:12 PM
Its no wonder why he was talking to a "brick wall"- but im sure this movie will be---fine!
NOLANITE - 3/10/2012, 12:12 PM
(Hailing Nolan) Okay Im done!

I knew it! Ive known all along that Whedon was going to go with Play Doh!
SpideyQuad - 3/10/2012, 12:15 PM
The Infinity Gauntlet was hinted at the ComicCon for a reason. I say the movie will usher to "The Mad Titan" Thanos
antonio - 3/10/2012, 12:17 PM
I think Thanos will be the post-credits reveal. That would be a huge markout geek moment!
thetrojan - 3/10/2012, 12:20 PM
its called avengers assemble for a reason
this is just to establish the gang
and it will take two and a half hours to do that
and during the gathering we will see our classic fights between them while loki plays his role
then right at the end an alien invasion by lokis army will occur
big battle at the end and just when you thought it was over

some bigger f****r will appear and the avengers will shit themselves...

and we can all get excited for the definite avengers 2
the money involved in this movie will not let it fail
thetrojan - 3/10/2012, 12:27 PM
i am dissapointed though..

but could marvel be attempting some kind of continuity?
will the avengers be used to launch some of the suggestions, like thanos and the infinity gauntlet?
i have mentioned before that my kids who are only eight know all about thanos from the kids cartoon versions..

i know they are doing it with spiderman, but how soon do you think the film companies will attempt an iron man or a captain america reboot...

i might be dreaming of the impossible but it was nice and fuzzy for a moment there.
TheDickRises - 3/10/2012, 12:29 PM
namor and skrull still ff property its odd seeing them in other property

thanos, ultron, kree, master of evil is good for sequel
cant wit for giant man, wasp, black panther
DioFoRio - 3/10/2012, 12:29 PM
ALF FTW!!!
thetrojan - 3/10/2012, 12:29 PM
i know they are doing it with spiderman, but how soon do you think the film companies will attempt an iron man or a captain america reboot...

I meant to add that i dont think it will be for a very long time and meanwhile they know they have a captured collectors market who will buy the lot...so..continuity
AvengersRock - 3/10/2012, 12:30 PM
The Skrulls would have been great, but if they set up Thanos, that will be even better!!!
HulkbusterNYC - 3/10/2012, 12:33 PM
Listen to what he said people.. Using the Kree or Skrull in this movie wouldn't have worked.. With such huge backstories for both races, they wouldn't have been portrayed correctly and the way all of us would like to see.. I think it's great that Marvel and Whedon didn't just try to cram them in there to make a fast buck.. Instead they're saving the Kree Skrull War to be done RIGHT.. That my friends I feel is good news from a fan boys perspective.. When we do see it I want it done the right way..
Mucklefluga - 3/10/2012, 12:33 PM
Its not gonna be frost giants gguuuyyyysss
capMO - 3/10/2012, 12:34 PM
would've loved both the skrulls or the kree as the villains, but I think he's very right about both their backstories, there's already A LOT to get into 1 film when dealing with a team like the Avengers.. cant wait until apil 26th :D

Check out my blog Capmocomics.blogspot.com!!! Superhero comics are the topic, and though mostly Marvel, any kind of comics can feature. Take a look, comment, criticize, applaud, whatever comes to mind when reading it!!!

Atlanteans... I hope
GUNSMITH - 3/10/2012, 1:02 PM
PROBABLY CUSTOM MADE ALIENS FOR THE MOVIE...

Comedian666 - 3/10/2012, 1:04 PM
It's NOT the frakking Annihilation Wave either, people! Annihilus and the Skrulls are all part of the Fantastic Four license...they ahve Skrulls, Annihilus, Blastaar, the Negative Zone, Galactus, Silver Surfer, Terrax, Firelord, all the rest of the Heralds, Doctor Doom, Diablo, Mole Man and the Moloids (so it's not them either in case anyone wanted to throw them into the guess for some insane reason), the Mad Thinker, the Frightful Four, the Red Ghost, Immortus, Puppet Master, Psycho Man, and Overmind, I believe. There may be more, but I am pretty sure they have all of those included...
vtopa - 3/10/2012, 1:05 PM
BRING US NOVA.
rockerdude22 - 3/10/2012, 1:12 PM
Maybe the mystery villians are both Annihulus and Thanos, with the army as the Annihilation Wave. Think about it, in the comics, Thanos teamed up with Annihulus during the Annihilation Wave story. Loki is said to have made deals with "gangsters", meaning more than one, for the army. Maybe these so called "gangsters" he makes a deal with are Annihulus and Thanos. Yeah, having both of them in one movie may seem overkill, but if this is the case, I trust that Joss will do it right.
Hawksblueyes - 3/10/2012, 1:18 PM
Comedian666: You need to look that list of yours up somewhere else.
AlanWarlock - 3/10/2012, 1:25 PM
No Thanos. Unless a big gloved hand appears at the end to retrieve a Cosmic Cube, though I think they'd probably rather not repeat themselves with the Cube.
LP4 - 3/10/2012, 1:25 PM
Hahaha cool, now all the skrull people can finally shut the hell up

Lol
