In an interview with Empire Magazine, Scarlett Johansson has talked more about how Black Widow (first introduced in 2010's Iron Man 2) fits into Marvel's The Avengers. Praising writer/director Joss Whedon's ability to write strong female characters and commenting on Widow's role in the superhero ensemble, check out what she had to say below.

"Joss said to me, 'I want to do everything I can to keep this from being,' in his words, a sausagefest.'" I said, 'That's disgusting, but okay.'"

"I knew that I didn't want to play a love interest. That's not who Widow is. I think Joss understood the importance of having a female perspective. He's a very sensitive guy. He works really well with women. He obviously can write for them! He loves strong and independent women and he's got a certain understanding of, and an appreciation for, women who take charge of the situation, of themselves - so it was clear to me that the character would not be underwritten."

"I don't think Widow things about proving herself. She's incredibly confident. She has no interest in being on anybody's good side. She's not looking to be top of the class. I don't think there's any ego involved there. She leaves that ego stuff for the big man in the iron suit, I guess. I think she's just incredibly practical."

" He works really well with women. He obviously can write for them!"

I agree with that 100%, when it comes to female characters, its the perfect job for Joss! The movie serenity, dollhouse, buffy (Ive heard that she was an inspiration to Kitty Pryde from the x- men)

I think he will make BW a good character in this flick (even if she may be much different in the comic version). With russian accent or not, I think she will make a good job thanks to mr. Whedon

KeithM - 3/30/2012, 5:50 AM
@Owlman: She's a spy, so no she shouldn't have a Russian accent - it would give the game away rather easily don't you think?

Or are you one of those who think Russian spies should have a thick accent so we can tell they're spies?
Wildaniel - 3/30/2012, 6:23 AM
Joss Whedon does great with female characters! I know that ScarJo as Black Widow will be awesome!!!

But still I dont mine seeing her hook up with Steve or Winter Soldier in the future, lol.
Wildaniel - 3/30/2012, 6:24 AM
Also it seems that Maria Hill will have a bigger role in this movies then we thought. Theres alot of stills of her and in some of them she is beat up a little, lol.
GingerBird - 3/30/2012, 6:24 AM
Worst casting choice ever.

@marvel72, Black Widow is in Iron Man 3. It already has been confirmed
elessarundomiel2382 - 3/30/2012, 6:46 AM
@owlman, yes she used to have a russian accent. However reading the comics this day and age, can you actually tell if she has a russian accent or not. In all her years in the US she wouldve either lost it by now or purposely put on an american accent to blend in. It would be good for her to have a russian accent in a Black Widow movie where she takes on the Kremlin and the KGB

"I knew that I didn't want to play a love interest. That's not who Widow is."

yesss
Fogs - 3/30/2012, 7:09 AM
The russian accent wouldn't make sense for a top sky like her. I can understand it IF that was the reason.
Ha1frican - 3/30/2012, 7:24 AM
Buffy 2.0.... Not in a bad way either :)
Ha1frican - 3/30/2012, 7:27 AM
Azazel1 whoa what?! Firefly and Serenity are awesome. You may not like little things like "Dialogue" or "character development" but those of us that can comprehend those things do..
Ha1frican - 3/30/2012, 7:28 AM
Omg can you imagine if they made her as badaas as River from serenity... one can hope.
avengingson - 3/30/2012, 7:42 AM
Yeah she needs to 'bone up' on her Black Widow back story... The Widow's banged Hawkeye, Daredevil, and Bucky, just to name a few off the top of my head... But I'm glad there won't be a silly romance angle.
hoodedjester - 3/30/2012, 8:05 AM
They are really pumping out the interviews and marketing on this movie. At least they know they will make back their money on this one unlike John Carter - too bad, it wasn't that bad of a film.

Avengers is gonna be #%$^ing awesome
marvel72 - 3/30/2012, 8:09 AM
@ elessarundomiel2382

to get the RIGHT Black Widow the movie needs to be, at least, rated R. BW's a playah... much like Hawkeye. but, i guess, they're goin with new, more family-oriented characters, here..and understandably so, with everything at stake.
Minghagz - 3/30/2012, 9:33 AM
Everytime she talks about BW she just reveals that she doesn't know what the [frick] she's talking about. She clearly has not read up or done any research on the character. Miscast for sure. I'm with Grif on this one, I hope she dies.
ralfinader - 3/30/2012, 11:55 AM
@JillValenfield - Kitty was his inspiration for Buffy. Kitty has been kicking around since 1980.

She described the Black Widow I want to see in this movie, NO LOVE SUB-PLOTS!
mgeoff88 - 3/30/2012, 4:03 PM
I think Joss Whedon will make Black Widow what she should have been in IM2.

A well written, strong female character, that is much more than just eye candy.

I hope Black Widow doesn't actually end up being a bad guy. I kind of have a feeling she might be though.
