THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: Marc Webb On Lizard's Lab Coat

Fans have wondered where Lizard's iconic lab coat is, and now director Marc Webb promises that fans won't be disappointed! He also comments on what made the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko creation a good choice of villain and more.

While Marc Webb has decided to go for a slightly different look for The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man (inspired more by Steve Ditko's work than the animalistic version made famous by the likes of Todd MacFarlane), that hasn't stopped fans from wondering whether the iconic villain will don his equally iconic white lab coat. "That's a good question. Be patient, grasshopper," Webb teased in a recent interview with MTV Splash Page. "[Regarding] the lab coat, be patient...you won't be disappointed."

As for Curt Connors motivation s and what made him the perfect choice of villain, Webb revealed: "For the Lizard, Doctor Connors has a missing arm, which sets him on his path. There's this symmetrical theme in Curt Connors being the literal embodiment of the movie's theme: we all have a missing piece. How we look to fill that void is how we define ourselves. It made sense. After I figured that out, it was a logical choice. Obviously, Curt's morality is looser than Peter's turns out to be, but their motivations are quite similar," he added. "They just evolve and manifest themselves in different ways."

STARRING:

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy
Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors/The Lizard
Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben
Sally Fields as Aunt May
Denis Leary as George Stacy

RELEASE DATE: July 3rd, 2012.

BlueMex - 4/18/2012, 12:43 PM

Spidey91 - 4/18/2012, 12:43 PM

pyrodude93 - 4/18/2012, 12:47 PM
@Bluemex - dude, it's more close to the ditko version.
superotherside - 4/18/2012, 12:53 PM
Hopefully he'll have pants and a lab coat so that people will stop talking about about why he doesn't have his manhood. That's why I'm sooo glad Hulk has pants! :) It is plain freaky when they don't... like ewwwwww...
Stumblin - 4/18/2012, 1:00 PM
@superotherside, many reptiles keep their junk inside their bodies so it wouldn't matter if he had pants or not.
spidey1994 - 4/18/2012, 1:01 PM
I'm going to guess, YES!!! WE HAVE THE LAB COAT!!!!!
SpiderBat209 - 4/18/2012, 1:05 PM

Ironman 53 that's creepy:/
SpiderFan35 - 4/18/2012, 1:09 PM
I'm getting tired of these directors and their teasing cryptic bs. Why is it better to release tons of pics and info that displeases fans if they have the fan-pleasing stuff on deck?

They seem to love the "See, it was going to be in there all along, we just made you wait to see it, meanwhile you spent a year being pissed off that the movie was going to suck". Great marketing strategy. smh.
Stumblin - 4/18/2012, 1:10 PM
@PatientZero, what can I say? I'm a master at cold blooded naughty bits. HA!
marvel72 - 4/18/2012, 1:11 PM

Stumblin - 4/18/2012, 1:17 PM
@PatienZero, that sounds about right, I'm not really sure myself...
thewonderer - 4/18/2012, 1:18 PM
Well thank you for the lab coat but the Lizard design still looks like shit
Stumblin - 4/18/2012, 1:18 PM
@LOGANXX36, you're adorable.
MovieMann - 4/18/2012, 1:19 PM
@ ironman53

The lizzard talking to spiderman on film with That mouth would look so cartoony.

the ditko version works better for FILM

LOGISTICS LOGISTICS my friend
xstryker - 4/18/2012, 1:31 PM
Anyone who based their opinion of whether the movie was going to suck or not on something as trivial as a labcoat is completely retarded. General audiences base their opinions like this: Is Spider-Man in it? Does it look action-packed? Any interesting actors or actresses in it? Fanboys, of course, want to see how much stuff from the comic gets screen time, and that's a good criteria; but we shouldn't get too hung up on little details because it makes us look like idiots who'd rather see an accurate movie than an entertaining one.

I think the suit looks great, Gwen looks great, Dennis Leary as a very hostile Capt Stacy creates one of those classic Peter Parker relationship problems, and Webb obviously sounds like he's thought out the characters well so they won't seem flat. I'm not sold on the look of the Lizard, but I'll give the movie a chance to convince me otherwise. And if the action and dialogue are good, a few visual flaws won't be deal breakers for me anyway.
Spidey31 - 4/18/2012, 1:31 PM
@stumblin You mean ectothermic animals? Just learned that in Bio today:)
SpiderFan35 - 4/18/2012, 1:45 PM
supersaiyanfan1: Thanks for the update buzzkillington lol. RIP Dick.

@xstryker: Yeah well some fans are more hard core than others I suppose. I understand not everything from the source material can be duplicated in a movie, but at the same time if they chnage too much then it starts to approach the "loosely based on" territory.
CaptainObvious - 4/18/2012, 1:46 PM
@itsbarry- Webb a better director than Nolan? Let's see here. Webb has only directed 1 film while Nolan has made 7 with another out this summer. Nolan has gotten Oscar nominations and many other awards while Webb was only nominated for a Golden Globe once.

Also, why would audiences get tired of superhero movies when a DC film comes out, but randomly become interested again when a Marvel film comes out afterwards? Your bias is showing.

Anyway, I wouldn't have such a problem with the absence of a lab coat if the Lizard looked like the Lizard. We should have gotten a terrifying reptilian creature, but instead we got Goomba leftovers.

Nothing about this movie excites me besides the cast.
SpiderFan35 - 4/18/2012, 1:58 PM
Gotta run Spidey fans, I leave you with this

sexfoodcomics - 4/18/2012, 2:00 PM
I know for a 100% certainty the lab coat will be on the lizard around 30%-40% of the time we see him. We all will see it.
WellDrawn - 4/18/2012, 2:04 PM
Not seeing Lizard wear a trench coat is like seeing the Punisher not wear a skull.... Oh wait.... ohhhhh

Actually, it's like seeing a non brunette lois lane.... Oh wait....ohhhhh
WellDrawn - 4/18/2012, 2:06 PM
Actually, it's mostly like seeing Spidey with yellow eyes...
mayo23 - 4/18/2012, 2:08 PM
@ SpiderFan35 It's called leaving surprises for the actual movie. And why didn't they show images of "fan-pleasing stuff"? Because the lab coat isn't going to be on the Lizard the entire time! Seriously, all I hear is complaining.
GreendaleHumanBeing - 4/18/2012, 2:17 PM

So, you're telling me there is a chance?
GreyChaos13Zero - 4/18/2012, 2:17 PM
so it's gonna be in a scene or two, works with me?)
Spidey31 - 4/18/2012, 2:26 PM
loganxx you are really stupid its amazing, i assume you havent read ultimate spider-man... o yea and it looking action packed is a personal opinion. and sorry the general audience will choose spider-man over the avengers any day, everyone loves spiderman. except you im guessing
Spidey31 - 4/18/2012, 2:28 PM
@itsberry marc webb is good but not better than nolan maybe wedon not nolan
Ha1frican - 4/18/2012, 2:46 PM
@LOGANXX36 did you forget the parts where they made Peter not only an idiot most of the time, but fat in 2. Threw Gwen Stacy out of the window for the unattractive cardboard cutout that is Kirsten Dunst, had atrociously bad dialogue, and had Harry Osbourne be nothing more than an annoyance for 3 films? You must have because otherwise you wouldn't want Raimi back for ANYTHING to do with Spiderman... bub...
Ha1frican - 4/18/2012, 2:52 PM
@Azazel1 depends, as far as story and cinematography go yeah Nolan wins but what Joss has in spades is character interactions and dialogue. Something that Nolan tends to overlook (i can't think for the life of me one thing Batman said to anyone in the Dark Knight accept the interrogation scene) But regardless comparing them is apples and oranges
xstryker - 4/18/2012, 3:00 PM
Logan - I disagree with some points, agree with others, but these are all more important topics to argue about than the friggin lab coat.
DevilHulk666 - 4/18/2012, 3:16 PM
I reckon Dittko at the start, changing to McFarlane at the end
mayo23 - 4/18/2012, 3:43 PM
@ Azazel1 I haven't seen Memento so I can't comment on that, but calling TDK and Inception masterpieces? Hardly masterpieces. Good movies perhaps? depending on who you ask. TDK rode off the hype of Heath Ledger's performance while Inception just rode off of TDK's success.
BlackDynamite - 4/18/2012, 3:43 PM
@DevilHulk666 yessssss

anyway, he has the lab coat on when he injects himself in the trailer so i figured the lizard would have it on in that scene.

SuspenseSmith - 4/18/2012, 3:56 PM
His manhood? What do you think the tail is...
spectre88 - 4/18/2012, 3:59 PM
I'll take that as a yes!
laughterman26 - 4/18/2012, 4:43 PM
@Ironman53 claytin crains the man.
AutobotCommander84 - 4/18/2012, 4:47 PM
@CaptainObvious It's obvious that you've never read the early Lee/Ditko issues then if you haven't realized that the Lizard DOES look like Lizard, just not the McFarlane one.
Ashes2Phoenix - 4/18/2012, 5:55 PM
@BaneKill77: He was a little chunky and stubby.

mynnDAWG - 4/18/2012, 6:21 PM
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
CaptainObvious - 4/18/2012, 6:34 PM
@AutobotCommander84- I actually have read some Lee/Ditko issues and I know what the Lizard looked like then. But that was 50 years ago. What worked then doesn't exactly work today. I don't care if they're being faithful to the original design. Comic book fans may be able to appreciate that, but the general audience will laugh if that's the Lizard they're going for.

By the way, don't make assumptions. Assuming things will get you nowhere.
Ha1frican - 4/18/2012, 6:40 PM
@Banekill77 ^^ does that look like the most flexible/ agile character in ll of Marvel to you?
AUSSYACE - 4/18/2012, 6:46 PM
Those CGI guys are working their Arses off right now adding that Lab Coat to scenes in the movie...
mgeoff88 - 4/18/2012, 6:46 PM
So he will wear the lab coat after all. I just hope it's for more than a couple of scenes.
thewolfx - 4/18/2012, 8:21 PM
lasttime i checked ditkos version had a labcoat and pants
chuckg313 - 4/18/2012, 8:52 PM
@Ironman53 nice pic it just reminds me why the lizard was a cool character to begin with all the cool shots of lizzy's tail and teeth tring to rip spidey apart....with out the threat of his bite he seems a bit lame
thewonderer - 4/18/2012, 11:32 PM
Wow at the people insulting batman

Nolan's screenwriting is clearly by far the best writing in any Cbm. You won't find any cliche or stupid lines in any of Nolans films. They're all have purpose

People forget Joss Whedon wrote the worst line in Cbm history "what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning, etc."

TDK and Inception didn't just ride hype. They had excellent casts and people still recite lines from them. That's how memorable they are. Truly masterpieces
Kalel219 - 4/19/2012, 4:22 AM
@thewonderer

I've already proven you wrong on "You won't find any cliche or stupid lines in any of Nolans films" but I'm gonna do it again

"I'm not wearing hockey pads"

"Nice coat....thanks"

[Driving the Batmobile, Gordon squeals to a stop before Wayne Tower]
Pedestrian: Nice ride!

"Dent, I thought you were dead?"
"Half"
pepe - 4/19/2012, 7:58 AM
Fox and all other a-holes, should give back these characters too Marvel!!! They would have given him a lab coat... Aaaait
