THE AVENGERS Takes $80.5M On Friday; Record Breaking $175M Expected For The Weekend

A $67M opening? Pfft. Turns out that figure was waaaay off. Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble has exceeded expectations with a $80M at the North American box office yesterday and is expected to gross a record breaking total of $175M by Monday.

Deadline reports that the total taken on Friday by Marvel's The Avengers is in actual fact $80.5M; not the previously reported estimation of between $65M and $67M. This includes the $18.1M taken at midnight showings and puts the film on track for a record breaking $175M total through Sunday. This falls slightly short of the past Friday record of $91M set by Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 but does mean that the Joss Whedon helmed Marvel Studios film will take the record for highest grossing opening weekend ever. It also guarantees that it will have surpassed $500M by Monday and that doesn't even take into account the fact it opens in China and Russia this weekend too. Currently, The Avengers has made $334.3M internationally and is on track for $575M worldwide.

WolvieCBM - 5/5/2012, 7:40 AM
Not sure if the numbers will hold (I sure hope so), but if they do, that means it will break Potter's record.

Anyway, it's a huge success no matter what.
GiantNerd0720 - 5/5/2012, 7:43 AM
People that I know who aren't giant nerds like me are going nuts about this movie.

I have to wait til Sunday. As Grif would say "[frick]ing sucks!".
THORGodOfThunder - 5/5/2012, 7:51 AM

Priest - 5/5/2012, 7:57 AM
So, where's all the people that where talking crap about this movie? I can't wait to read how they rationalize the success of this movie.

My personal opinion is that The Avengers IS the best comic book movie of all time. Someone needs to make a poll about it. I am sure it will win.
genesis609 - 5/5/2012, 8:02 AM

I love the part where Hulk smashes Loki around the ground and calls him a Puny God.The Look on Loki's face.... AWESOMENESS!
GreendaleHumanBeing - 5/5/2012, 8:10 AM
The Avengers is in position to be the number 1 movie for the entire month of May. With solid word of mouth, James Cameron may no longer be owner of the top spot. Joss Whedon, whom some of you doubted during the hiring, has crafted a movie that for the first time in a long while feels truly heroic.
GreyChaos13Zero - 5/5/2012, 8:10 AM
great news, tho I still gotta watch it. soon, I'm in no rush, waited four years, couple more days won't hurt! also, my city is flooded with the bootleg(haven't watched it), funny tho I heard it looks shitty! HaHa?)
Necrophobos - 5/5/2012, 8:11 AM
Well, if 180 million is a possibility, then by next Sunday it is quite possible that this movie will have grossed upward of 350 million stateside alone. And if in just 10 days it reaches this number, imagine what it could do with the rest of it's remaining days.

And 1 billion, from my point of view, is a lock at this moment. What I'm curious is if it can reach 1,5 billion. Now that would be something.
GreyChaos13Zero - 5/5/2012, 8:12 AM
I should also add they said the movie is great tho?)
AlSimmons - 5/5/2012, 8:12 AM
Saturday will probably make even more money. No school so people can catch the matinees.
JordanKing - 5/5/2012, 8:13 AM
I'm so happy right now! Gonna go see it again tonight!
Sparrowsabre7 - 5/5/2012, 8:15 AM
I'm not really sure we should be surprised. Transformers 3 made silly money and that was very poorly reviewed. Still, great news for Marvel =) I wonder what kind of money TDKR will make though, that doesn't have the benefit of 3D ticket prices and they're also lacking the Joker angle. I hope it's successful though.
gannicus - 5/5/2012, 8:17 AM
awesome movie it deserves to make money iam waiting for that DC fanboy on here to make a lame new list lol ah iam sure the dark knight rises will make a ton of money but this movie was awesome.
AstonishingSpiderMan - 5/5/2012, 8:18 AM

Kayo - 5/5/2012, 8:27 AM
Kudos to Marvel Studios and to Joss Whedon
moviesrawesome - 5/5/2012, 8:30 AM
The best part of this film and crucial to its financial success is how instantly re-watchable it is. I've seen it twice and want to see it again. Pretty much everyone I've spoken to about it that have seen it have either seen it multiple times or want to see it again. Incredible!
valeriesghost - 5/5/2012, 8:32 AM
this is good news
AverageJoe - 5/5/2012, 8:36 AM
@ DoubleD. I totally concur. This is an event. The audience's reaction was amazing. I'm going to take my wife, and our 14, 13, and 8 yr olds today. I know they are going to love it. I saw it yesterday by myself(so I didn't have any distractions) and can't wait to share it with them. Sounds weird I know, but it really is that good. Perfect? No, but damn close. I want it to come out on Blue Ray right now so I can watch it at home 24/7.
avengingson - 5/5/2012, 8:39 AM
I'd like to keep it positive, in light of this excellent news. Nah, [frick] it. SUCK IT, HATERS!!! SUCK IIIIIITTT!!!

Priest - 5/5/2012, 8:42 AM
@ Kes,

That's a really good idea. A movie about a super-villain would be something different and interesting.

Seen it twice may see it again next week. Its brilliant, this is the defintion of a comicbook on the big screen. An overlooked aspect is the movements of Cap. Though it was short, his jumping of cars and free running when he leaves black widow and hawkeye was thoroughly accurate. Thats what i've been waiting for, Cap showing his skills. So many unique moments in this film that elevate it beyond any superhero film before it. Joss whedon knows his heroes. Every hero had their moment and were portrayed spectacularly. So pleased with the gross and critical reception been a while since we've had a film with both in this genre.
