THE AVENGERS Takes $80.5M On Friday; Record Breaking $175M Expected For The Weekend
A $67M opening? Pfft. Turns out that figure was waaaay off. Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble has exceeded expectations with a $80M at the North American box office yesterday and is expected to gross a record breaking total of $175M by Monday.
Deadline reports that the total taken on Friday by Marvel's The Avengers is in actual fact $80.5M; not the previously reported estimation of between $65M and $67M. This includes the $18.1M taken at midnight showings and puts the film on track for a record breaking $175M total through Sunday. This falls slightly short of the past Friday record of $91M set by Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 but does mean that the Joss Whedon helmed Marvel Studios film will take the record for highest grossing opening weekend ever. It also guarantees that it will have surpassed $500M by Monday and that doesn't even take into account the fact it opens in China and Russia this weekend too. Currently, The Avengers has made $334.3M internationally and is on track for $575M worldwide.
