Box office results aren't exactly exciting news. I mean, it's not like the debut of a new trailer or the reveal of a new piece of casting information. However, it's hard to deny that following the progress of Marvel's The Avengers at the North American box office this weekend has been something of a thrill. With estimates having the film down as making anything from $150 million to $175 million, the Joss Whedon helmed superhero ensemble has exceeded expectations again and again. Following the announcement yesterday that the film would gross a record breaking $200.3M (although that was by no means a guarantee as it could have ended up falling slightly below that number) Deadline reveals that Disney ended up taking as much as $55 million on Sunday. This takes its weekend total to an amazing $205 million and its worldwide cume to somewhere around the $650 million mark. Marvel's The Avengers is now guaranteed to join the $1 billion club, but where on the list of all-time highest grossing films (find it HERE) do you think it will end up? Can it beat Avatar?! Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

UPDATE: Disney has confirmed that Marvel's The Avengers made $56.8M yesterday, taking its total for the weekend up to roughly $207.1M, its foreign total to $447.4M and global to $654.5M.

STARRING:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson
Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill
Tom Hiddleston as Loki

Batman27 - 5/7/2012, 3:20 AM
I hope it beats Avatar that film was horrible. This film deserves everything it's getting. I haven't had this much fun since I first watched Jurassic Park.
GH - 5/7/2012, 3:24 AM
Let's sink that damn Titanic already and go on to conquer Pandora!
Bodwulf - 5/7/2012, 3:27 AM
Made more in three days than Cap or Thor did the 3 months they were in theater! MONSTER!
A favorite line from the Avengers, Shakespeare in the Park.
Nightmare7 - 5/7/2012, 3:33 AM

Batman27 - 5/7/2012, 3:34 AM

[frick]ing awesome

Batman27 - 5/7/2012, 3:45 AM
It really won't have any real competition until MB3 and Prometheus. Will Smith is pretty damn popular. Prometheus looks like it will be really good actually.
fattieacid - 5/7/2012, 3:45 AM
COME ON BATMAN FANS! LETS GET CLOSE TO A BILLION DOLLARS!!!

Destroyer7 - 5/7/2012, 4:04 AM
The Avengers will beat Titanic 3D and Avatar
R888 - 5/7/2012, 4:07 AM
What happens if dark shadow beats this?
beetheb - 5/7/2012, 4:11 AM
It will beat neither Avatar nor Titanic worldwide, it doesn't have anywhere near the clout overseas it would need to do that. I think it has a legit shot at unseating Deathly Hallows 2 at #3 though.

My predictions:
Domestic: $520 Million
Foreign: $850 Million

Total: $1.37 Billion - #3 all-time worldwide
R888 - 5/7/2012, 4:14 AM
Hopefully it stays on top for next week even though I don't care about this box office, I gald its making tons of cash
Jamesx51 - 5/7/2012, 4:16 AM
Great news... Go Marvel
beetheb - 5/7/2012, 4:17 AM
Kes: Good call on the $200 Million weekend, and you may be right on $1 Billion in the next week or 10 days.

Matter of fact, I'm upping my earlier prediction to $1.7 Billion worlwide. I've underestimated how it would perform like 3 times now, think I'll get with the program and overestimate slightly.
animeex - 5/7/2012, 4:21 AM
Yea! I said no less than 175 to and probably 200+ opening weekend. I figured it would do the higher! I think this assures a sequel!
thunderforce - 5/7/2012, 4:23 AM
I say it will end up third .
darkmetal - 5/7/2012, 4:26 AM
This review is a big reason this movie is kicking ass like it is! Girls enjoy the movie as much as guys!
What the writers, Director, the cast and everyone else did with Avengers is truly incredible!
thunderforce - 5/7/2012, 4:33 AM
You know with the success this movie is having the next Avengers movie can even have a larger budget so the sky no space will be the limit .
BlackSun77 - 5/7/2012, 4:37 AM
Beat those Pandoran Blue monkeys into submission.
beetheb - 5/7/2012, 4:45 AM
Seriously, Avatar has $2.7 Billion worlwide. The Avengers will not beat it, and that's a guarantee.
jazzman - 5/7/2012, 4:45 AM
this is so great. more money it makes more new characters Marvel Studio could bring on the big screen.
BlanketMan - 5/7/2012, 4:46 AM
Saw it for the 4th time on Sunday, and when an 11:30 AM Sunday matinee is completely sold out, you know something special is going on. The usher said every showing on Friday night through Sun morning was a sell-out (playing on 8 screens there). The only question is, where does it go from here? The 2nd weekend will tell us a lot. Even a steep 60% drop would still give it $80 million next weekend... I'm hoping for closer to $90 mil!
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 5/7/2012, 4:46 AM
This movie deserves the success it is having. This is by far the GREATEST COMIC BOOK MOVIE EVER!!!!Joss Whedon did not disappoint. The Hulk stole the show and every character got their time to shine.I've seen this movie three times this weekend and I'm going to see it again this Friday.I also hope they save Thanos for the third Avengers movie.Ultron or Kang would either be great for Avengers 2.Ahh yes,THANOS looked great at the end credit.THANOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jazzman - 5/7/2012, 4:46 AM
@beetheb

it might not beat it, but Avatar aint a good movie.
Ashes2Phoenix - 5/7/2012, 4:46 AM
@Ironman53: Loving the Jessica Jane Clements Gif !
mikebunt - 5/7/2012, 4:50 AM
@ R888 I actually Lol'd at that.
Shaman - 5/7/2012, 4:54 AM
Suck it haters. Suck long, suck it hard ;)
darkmetal - 5/7/2012, 4:57 AM
This movie will not have any competition for #1. Even if Spider-Man were good it would bring in around 390 million max. But all signs say its not.
Dark Knight will most likely do over 400 million but it may come in with less, great or not. DK was a huge success because it was great, and Ledger was the main draw. It became his movie. This one is Bale's who is a great actor but not a great box office draw.
The Avengers is the massive success it is because of its greatness. The movie is loaded with more entertainment than any other sci-fi, action, or super hero movie ever. Other action movies may feel boring now. Especially the ones coming out just after the Avengers release.
Nubase - 5/7/2012, 5:04 AM
and on the 25th May Avengers will be forgotten when MIB3 comes out.

Marvel did their homework, releasing Avengers before all the other summer blockbusters so it will have no competition.

If it wants to reach a billion it has 3 weeks to do it.
brewtownpsych - 5/7/2012, 5:09 AM
not surprised ...
djKiDDvIcIOUs - 5/7/2012, 5:10 AM
A billion is a lock. MIB3 stands no chance in the wake of earths mightiest heros
Ceejay - 5/7/2012, 5:11 AM
Well its done way beyond expectations, mine included for an initial release. But the dangers of a very huge opening in the past has always been followed up by a very huge percentage drop the following weekend!

I have little doubt it'll will pass $1 billion by the end of its run but because Joss Whedon deserves it, I'm hoping it make substantially more around the 1.5 Billion mark. That way it should stay in the top ten for at least a few years.
CrowPirate1 - 5/7/2012, 5:13 AM
they are saying it's probably over 240 million total...

like.. wow.
bropous - 5/7/2012, 5:14 AM
I am SO proud of the House of M!

ONE BILLION PLUS. THAT'S what happens when a comic book fan makes a comic book movie.

DC, just go ahead and give it up. You guys surrendered to Marvel Films when Iron Man I came out. You KNEW this was in the pipeline, and yet you decided to just let Marvel clean the floors with you.

Marvel gave us Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Nick Fury and Maria Hill, all now to face down one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe: THANOS.

And what did DC Films give us? Superman against Lex Luthor, then Zod. Batman against the Joker, then Catwoman and Bane. And Green Lantern, written by committee, facing Parallax. And all failed to challenge the Mighty House of M.

DC HAS the characters to challenge Marvel Films. Question is: Do they have the leadership to do so?
CrowPirate1 - 5/7/2012, 5:15 AM
I friggin loved it. I went three times. hahaha.. friday night, and then sat and sun mornings. sigh.. I need a life. But, I finally was excited to be at the movies again!!

oh, but I had to sit through a preview of Battleship. [facepalm] Can't wait for Chutes and Ladders: The conquest of Earth!!!! and.. Candyland: Evil isn't sweet!!! .. sighs....
Ortonito - 5/7/2012, 5:15 AM
There is no reason why this won't continue to break records by being the first film to break $100m in its second week.

It'd have to drop below 50% for that not to happen, right?

I think this film has got the legs to run for miles yet.
gannicus - 5/7/2012, 5:20 AM
i hope the avengers and dark knight rises kicks avatars ass that film was shit that film and titanic most over rated films ever come on avengers and batman blow these films out the water.
GH - 5/7/2012, 5:30 AM
Have already watch it in IMAX, going for 2D nxt week!

Ain't seen Titanic b4 n dun intent to contribute a cent to it's name, ever!

Saw Avatar once, dun care to see it again!
marvel72 - 5/7/2012, 5:34 AM
fantastic news,if only the x-men & fantastic four had been shown the same amount of love by everyone involved.

if this doesn't inspire warner/dc to attempt a justice league movie,we'll never see one.
Kazaam - 5/7/2012, 5:40 AM
Not Avatar, but it can beat HP Part 2.
Destroyer7 - 5/7/2012, 5:44 AM
@jazzman I agree with you Avatar ain't a good movie...I think Avengers can beat that Avatar
G - 5/7/2012, 5:46 AM
Saw The Avengers this weekend. Did they show The Dark Knight Rises trailer? (Nope!!!) The Amazing Spider-Man trailer? (Nope!!!) I love starting a movie in a pissed off mood. Oh, wait, let me guess.. they were only showing them with the IMAX/3D versions, right?
thalidomide - 5/7/2012, 5:47 AM
