Vulture has conducted an experiment of sorts in order to find out which Avenger received the largest amount of screen time in Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble. They used a stopwatch and timed the entire film, making a note of when the characters listed below were on screen. They didn't time every split second cut of footage, instead making a note of the scenes in which they most prominently featured in. What follows are their results.

Hawkeye: 12:44

Thor: 25:52

Bruce Banner/The Hulk: 28:03

Black Widow: 33:35

Iron Man: 37:01

Captain America: 37:42

So, for those of you who had assumed that the film would be "Iron Man and The Avengers" (understandable after Robert Downey Jr. was given the spotlight in most of the trailers, TV spots and poster) it was in fact the First Avenger who had the most amount of screen time...just! The site go into much greater detail about the scenes they all featured in, so be sure to click on the link below to read the article in full. Perhaps most surprising about these timings is the varying amount of time each Avenger got, especially when it felt pretty equal during the film itself! The Avengers served as an introduction of sorts for Hawkeye (as the only character not to have prominently featured in a previous solo movie) so it's perhaps not that surprising he received the least amount of time. What do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

STARRING:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson
Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill
Tom Hiddleston as Loki

Thor was awesome.

I was happy we got to see his strength, more use of lightning, and fighting without Mjolnir!! Yeah Whedon!!!
NoAssemblyReqd - 5/8/2012, 4:12 AM
I remember Renner's jokey comment that he wasn't sure he was in the movie. If you think about it, he has very little screen time with the whole team. For most of the big battle, he's alone on a rooftop.
orgasmicslug - 5/8/2012, 4:12 AM
Cap may have had the most screen time, iron man may have had the witty lines but Hulk made the best use of the time he had. He was outstanding.
Destroyer7 - 5/8/2012, 4:20 AM
What about Loki
Berger45 - 5/8/2012, 4:22 AM
DoomXfactor - 5/8/2012, 4:22 AM
I actually would have wanted Thor to have more screen time but I'll take 25 minutes. Hmmm maybe if he would have had the helmet lol
DoomXfactor - 5/8/2012, 4:23 AM
More Thor next time please
NeoBaggins - 5/8/2012, 4:25 AM
The important thing is that it felt pretty even. Everyone had their story. And I like the loner vibe given to Barton. A little less screen time makes him more mysterious and badass.
Chewtoy - 5/8/2012, 4:29 AM
Thor had less because it took the longest amount of time for him to show up. Once he arrived, there was no shortage of him.
thunderforce - 5/8/2012, 4:29 AM
I don't care too much about the time as long as the story flowed good and it did . @ckal yes Thor was awesome headbutting Iron Man was badass also breaking out of a trap meant to kill the Hulk also badass . Awesome battles against a 400% juiced up Iron Man and an uncontrollable Loki mind [frick]ed Hulk all Badass .
SuperSomething616 - 5/8/2012, 4:30 AM
Apart from Hawkeye seems pretty even to me!!!
jaewest215 - 5/8/2012, 4:35 AM
Why does it matter? You all need some vagina.
RunawaysHD - 5/8/2012, 4:38 AM
Not a big difference. I thought Hawkeye had more time? Seemed like it. He was pretty darn good!
vtopa - 5/8/2012, 4:44 AM
MOre Thor and more Hawkeye next time please.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 5/8/2012, 4:48 AM
What?! Cap's who I was bitching about in my review not getting enough time!!! WTF?! I guess it's when he's on screen, it's just mesmorizing I don't pay attention enough.

CorndogBurglar - 5/8/2012, 4:51 AM
@ bar20

uh, Cap is the heart and soul of the team, and aside from the very first few issues, always has been. Why shouldn't he have more time than Thor?
Bar20 - 5/8/2012, 5:05 AM
orndogBurglar

Because i love Thor more then cap,

captain america is giving me the feeling that he is the weakest link in the team
BlanketMan - 5/8/2012, 5:06 AM
Uh-oh, don't let Downey (or his agent) see these numbers! :)
R888 - 5/8/2012, 5:07 AM
I thought everyone was even, everyone got their screen time, hawk eye my favourite a bad guy at start and then kicking major ass in the final battle.
Hulk, iron man, cap and thor were all awesome
Groge511 - 5/8/2012, 5:13 AM
I felt they all did get a decent amount of screen time each and all got a moment to shine. Most of you will hate me for saying this but I do think Captain A. didn't really seem to do much in comparison to the others. He didn't really have a HUGE role to play in helping. I'm not saying he's not nesecessary, of course he is, I just think he could've done more, especially in the fighting. Great leader though, giving all the orders ;)
Nilso - 5/8/2012, 5:14 AM
This team would have been lost without Cap in the field. Weakest link? Idiots!
R888 - 5/8/2012, 5:15 AM
Can have this guy next in the avengers next :)

marvel72 - 5/8/2012, 5:19 AM
i had a guess before i clicked the article,i thought iron man but captain america just piped him to the post.
brewtownpsych - 5/8/2012, 5:19 AM
you're kidding me with this thread right?
DanielGrimaldi - 5/8/2012, 5:35 AM
War Machine?
EarOne - 5/8/2012, 5:38 AM
Cap and Tony having the most sound just about right. i still think Thor shoulda had that 'reunion' scene with Jane Foster, instead of just him looking at her photo, in the shield console.

and yeah...Fury should be on that list. after all, he's been waiting for his screen time for the past four movies. he deserves it the most.

as for Renner..i think a solo movie on him won't actually sell, but a SHIELD movie, featuring him, ScarJo, Sam J, Maria Hill AND..Gen. Ross (william hurt, or someone new), ruffalo as the SHIELD chief scientist, Carol Danvers as shield's liaison to the pentagon, the Pyms as Banner's team, Sam Wilson as an agent with the code name FALCON and, perhaps, Daisy Johnson, fury's protege with special talents..WITH RDJ cameoing as Tony.

as the villain, since according to the comics, Prof. Stern's seen being examined by the shield science team, he could make the turn to The Leader, here..maybe, later with the help of Abomination's return (he's not dead, in TIH).

hey, this, then, could be the movie that'll lead to another solo Hulk movie.
wow....what about what each hero ate at the end of the movie...can we have an article about that?
darkmetal - 5/8/2012, 6:09 AM
Their screen time was pretty much story driven. Thor was 1st seen in the movie 40 minutes into it. I would say from that point on he averaged the same as Cap and Iron Man.
The biggest point to be made about screen time is each time we saw them, the actor and character they played looked great.
THORGodOfThunder - 5/8/2012, 6:35 AM
Thor got shafted with the amount of screen time he had, that's my only complaint I wanted more Thor lol
MarvelManiac - 5/8/2012, 6:37 AM
@SteveRogersSon - what they ate at the end of the movie was the Schwarma that Tony Start was talking about before Thor transported Loki off world. That was the additional scene they shot after the Avengers Premier on April 11, when they were all gathered. I heard Chris Evans still had his gotee, so his face is hidden during the whole scene. I read that he wore some kind of prosthetic to cover up his facial hair, but you can't tell 'cause he covers his mouth with his hand during the whole scene. It looks like Ruffalo is trying his best not to laugh.

It is a funny scene, and shows that they're having a lot of fun with this project.
MarvelManiac - 5/8/2012, 6:38 AM
Stark, not Start. Sorry!
Bumble - 5/8/2012, 6:41 AM
really doesn't matter to me who got the most screen time. all that matters is is that is the best movie i have ever seen!
BigThor - 5/8/2012, 6:48 AM
@Bgg1175 "Thor was 1st seen in the movie 40 minutes into it. I would say from that point on he averaged the same as Cap and Iron Man."

Agreed, that's why as a huge Thor fan I didn't mind Thor having less screen time.
Shadowelfz - 5/8/2012, 6:55 AM
Ant-Man & Wasp: 0:00

Thats a good thing. Besides being lame characters they would have taken away from the others.
PsyBoy - 5/8/2012, 6:59 AM
I thought it was Black Widow toO! I felt like she was either starring or supporting every scene haha. and that's a good thing!
ROBBEATZZZ - 5/8/2012, 7:03 AM
Tired of people complaining about no "AVENGERS ASSEMBLE" shout..

i mean if you think about it they were not really on the same page yet a lot of issues and dysfunction..they came together @ the end without fighting (other than Hulks cheap shot on Thor lol)..maybe we will hear it in the second film
merrillmind - 5/8/2012, 7:12 AM
Ha ha thats funny after everyone worrying that CAP would be ignored ends up on screen the most. Now seeing how this movie will end up one if not the highest grossing film ever made we better get that 3 hr plus directors cut specifically to movie theatres like Joss promised us and even if we dont we already most of the 30 minutes of deleted scenes from the original 3 hr cut are with CAP. So since Joss said way back when the movie was from CAP's POV originally if you add another 30 minutes or so with deleted scene or a released directors cut then CAP will be head and shoulders above the rest with over an hour of actual screentime man JOSS IS BOSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MadTitan - 5/8/2012, 7:34 AM
Joss made a good job at balancing the appearances of the characters and it somehow felt that almost everyone got an equal footing but i'm happy with that.

it's just right that Cap got a bit more time as it was needed in the storyline and besides you can't have the heart and soul of that freakin' team acting lame and second only to Iron Man. Glad Joss made that point somehow and followed the comicbook perspective rather than sticking to the Disney marketing strategy.

thor came out later as it was in the script so it's understandable that such happened.

bottomline is majority of us love the film and it's what really matters!

MB007 - 5/8/2012, 7:35 AM
Awesome! He's my favourite Avenger! :-)
