DARK SHADOWS Set For A Disappointing $28M; THE AVENGERS Nears $1B Worldwide
Tim Burton's latest film was originally set to open with a fairly impressive $35M - $40M, but tracking now has it pegged as considerably lower than that while Marvel's The Avengers looks set for a $100M weekend, putting it on track for that $1B mark by Sunday.
Despite initial estimates of a $40M - $50M weekend, Dark Shadows is now expected to gross a disappointing $28M domestically, despite last night being on track for $35M - $40M. This is a shock for Warner Bros. and analysts, especially after the success of the last Tim Burton/Johnny Depp team-up, Alice in Wonderland (which grossed over $1B worldwide). It made only $10.5M yesterday, and with a budget of $150M-$175M, one can only hope it now performs better overseas. Unsurprisingly, the weekend will belong to The Avengers. It's set to make $28M today, with a weekend estimate of $100M or more. Ticket sales are still incredibly high, so it's likely that Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble will have no trouble crossing this figure and breaking the records set by Avatar and The Dark Knight. Disney claims that the film will cross $300M domestic on Saturday, with a $355M total by Sunday. With a current international gross of $533.3M (that's a global cume of $888.3M) it looks likely that it MIGHT hit that $1B mark by close of business Sunday.
