I never understood the hype around Avatar how the [frick] did it gross so much. Don't get me wrong I love James Cameron i mean the dude made T2 but besides the visuals Avatar is one dull and crappy film which is not helped by Worthington and his confusing accent (just stick to one dude either go all out Aussie or don't)

Excellent and still hasn't been released in Japan yet. I really hope it knocks Avatar down and being numero uno. Hopefully.

This doesn't apply to Avengers, but you only have to look at some of the absolute garbage that has made the top 10 there for proof that great BO doesn't always = great movie, and that a lot of people would pay to see a turd if it was up on a marquee.

Bosted, yes:) Hey some awesome movies also make a killing, just saying it shouldn't be seen as an indication of quality if a movie happens to bust blocks.

@jimdlux im a nolanite, and i still had nothing but hopes for this. plus, i saw the dang thing twice and its was incredible!
avengers was a true comic book movie. fun, action packed and really well fleshed out. the batman series is simply a fantastic imagining of the themes which provoke the character. very diff. movies, both fantastic franchises.

@RorMachin and Boosted

You are looking at the wrong thing, sales isn't really the big thing to tell if a movie is well watched, tickets are. If you take the price of a ticket today and multiple it by how many tickets were sold, Gone with the Wind is the #1 top grossing film in the world! If you are actually looking for the top "grossing" film...when ticket prices are 1.5 billion dollars a piece, Ghost Rider part 12 will be the number 1 film (sarcasm)

It won't top Avatar or Titanic, but such is life.

Aztec@ Avatar was a fantastic visual experience. Every other element to the film was pretty weak. That's why people here don't care for it. Some of us need more than just visuals to be satisfied with a film.

I don't get why these box office quotes always focus on domestic sales. Who cares how much just the domestic sales are. The "big picture" global sales are the only thing that matters in the long run.

Avatar made 2 billion because it was the first movie in 3D in a really long time. You could have made Green Lantern in 3D back then and it would have made 2 billion dollars just because it was in 3D. Avatar is retarded. Its like Star Wars, but if Luke Skywalker forgot to deliver r2d2 to the rebels. Stupid ass sam worthington forgets to even talk to blueman group about why he's even there in the first place.

@glasspleiades

I've never attacked the Nolan Batman films...just the people who think they are the new Ten Commandments... I agree they are great films, but they will never beat out the Avengers at the Box Office. 1st one made about 340 million, 2nd one made what it did cause of Ledger. Unless they are bringing him back to life, I would be surprised if TDKR breaks 700 million...

Wasn't quite sure what your list was...it looked like a bunch of numbers with dollar signs throughout. not sure what "$1,600,193,400 $198,676,459 1939" was.

sorry

I can't talk shit anymore. I liked this movie. Good to see a Marvel film on this list. It wouldn't be complete with a just a DC movie on this list. Now It's complete. Both great comic companies movies are on this list. But come on now guys please stop saying TDKR wont make money just because you like the Avengers better. It's downright foolish.... I'll have to call my boy Scheaffer on you.

Avatar was visual porn which somehow created cults of people who cried they didn't live on the planet. That's a way it made a lot of money. People who just going back because they wanted to believe they lived there. Insanity played a HUGE role in the rise of Avatar.

Give credit to Cameron though. He took a generic story, added a lot of spice and made himself an insanity stew that people felt they needed to eat to survive. That is pure directing brillance.

From that standpoint, I have no issue with AVATAR being number one. Cameron just knows what he is doing. Titanic's built in romance story is just as generic and stupid, but he knows his audience and knows how to play the audience fiddle better than anyone.
