DREDD Screened At Cannes; Described As "DIRTY HARRY Meets DISTRICT 9"

Dredd was screened at the Cannes Film Festival for distributors and we have a vague description (from one of the execs behind the film) of both of its tone and what those in attendance apparently made of what they were shown.

IM Global's Stuart Ford (the company that financed Dredd alongside Reliance Big Entertainment) tells Deadline of today's screening of the movie, "The reaction was great. It was as packed as any screening I’ve seen in Cannes. There were people sitting on the floor in the front and the back of the room." He also goes on to claim that despite the fact the air-conditioning at the screening broke down, no one walked out. A good sign of its quality? He also calls it, "an edgy, cool film with a rocking soundtrack," and says that in comparison to other upcoming superhero movies it, "appears very fresh and distinctive. It’s Dirty Harry meets District 9." Well, he's bound to be a little bias, so stay tuned for any other reactions we get. However, they're apparently having no issues with selling the film at the festival, so it might just end up being one of the biggest surprises of 2012!

Of course it is.
LucasMend - 5/17/2012, 2:39 PM
Knew it, looking forward to it
jazzman - 5/17/2012, 2:44 PM
ok this sounds good but i agree with alot of people we need a teaser or trailer.
connor110693 - 5/17/2012, 2:44 PM
its surprising there still isnt a trailer....but 2bh its probably for the best, some movies release to many trailers or trailers that reveal to much nowadays this could be a smart move. The only thing that could go against it is if anyone outside fans know this is coming out, in which case a trailer is needed.
marvel72 - 5/17/2012, 2:45 PM
dirty harry meets district 9 = sounds promising.
mikebunt - 5/17/2012, 2:45 PM
This could turn out to be an awesome movie. But I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't make a lot of money.
RorMachine - 5/17/2012, 2:45 PM
Yes! I realize he's a studio exec but at Cannes, if nobody walks out it's a great sign..those people are ruthless. So if it went down well there I'm very optimistic.
CorndogBurglar - 5/17/2012, 2:46 PM
This sounds promising. I really hope this is good. Dredd is a character who is long overdue for a proper showing on the big screen.
ralfinader - 5/17/2012, 2:49 PM
Seriously, if they have screened the damn thing at cannes, where is the damn trailer?

Also, it is saying something if nobody walked out at a film at Cannes.
Talontd - 5/17/2012, 2:50 PM
"It’s Dirty Harry meets District 9."

That is the PERFECT description of what a JUDGE DREDD movie should be!!!

Officially excited about this!

Silly helmet.

I hope this is at least R-rated, anyone knows?
INSTANTJUSTICE - 5/17/2012, 2:54 PM
It's been classified as R.
jazzman - 5/17/2012, 2:55 PM
@DanteSparda

its going to be r-rated
Bandrews1 - 5/17/2012, 2:58 PM
Well this has brought back my interest, I guess this could end up being a sleeper hit this year. But for the love of god, can we get a freaking trailer already, or some form of promotion.
dreddhead123 - 5/17/2012, 3:04 PM
Not sure if this site should do this as a new article but a poster for the film has been leaked!

http://www.lyricis.fr/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Dredd-3D-2-Cannes-2012.jpg

Yep, that is the first OFFICIAL poster online! :)
xfan320 - 5/17/2012, 3:12 PM
Yea, the helmet is almost total crap.. too bulky and those crossed lines/eyes? on the visor look ridiculous!!

I actually love the original dredd on MOST of its execution...
dreddhead123 - 5/17/2012, 3:15 PM
The X lines on the visor is how the helmet looks. The design of the helmet is 100 percent faithful to 2000AD's Judge Dredd although you could argue the shape of the helmet - how it fits on the head in relation to the size of the face - could be different. Here is another photo which showcases the uniform and helmets:

@yoss you have really bad taste in movies! How can anyone not like dirty harry!

"I actually love the original dredd on MOST of its execution…"-xfan320

but it's not the 'original' Dredd.
dreddhead123 - 5/17/2012, 3:20 PM
Problem is Mega-City 1 is not District 9. Quite a laughable comparison. Last time I read 2000AD's Judge Dredd - yesterday - MC-1 was not a shanty town.
Mercwitham0uth - 5/17/2012, 3:20 PM
Huh, wasn't expecting anything positive. Guess I'll have to wait and see for my self on the movies release day.
SHHH - 5/17/2012, 3:20 PM
xfan320 - 5/17/2012, 3:22 PM
@dreddhead-- I get that it's faithful to the design, but the fitting is all off..(like you said)

The crossed lines in the visor are OBVIOUSLY where the bridge of the nose fits, but they instead just put a giant black piece of plastic there.. and the top corners=eyes.. it looks good but fits like utter SH!T! Still wanna see it tho..just disappointed
INSTANTJUSTICE - 5/17/2012, 3:23 PM
"Problem is Mega-City 1 is not District 9. " -dreddhead123

He didn't say it was, dreddhead123/SCOJO, don't twist his words just because they're positive. He's marketing it in terms of style of film-making and what people are familiar with not saying Mega City One is District 9. He is a PR man.
dreddhead123 - 5/17/2012, 3:24 PM
If Mega-City 1 looks reasonably futuristic then a shanty town version could work. It's not the ideal way to do the city (arguably a very flawed approach) but the film is done on a small budget so visual compromises have to be made.

It's imperative there are enough glimpses of a sci-fi city. If it's too low-tech it will be a spectacular failure. Essential MC-1 is a city of the future. If they've nailed that sci-fi look it can work but we'll need to see a trailer to get some idea of the 'look'.
INSTANTJUSTICE - 5/17/2012, 3:26 PM
If it made a $billion you'd still say it was a failure "dreddhead123/SCOJO".
dreddhead123 - 5/17/2012, 3:28 PM
Sure, he is a PR Man. I wouldn't take anything he says as a sign the film is good or even faithful to the source material but the leaked image of the teaser poster looks cool. :)

I'm sure DNA Films' version of Judge Dredd will be a bit more contemporary because the budget is small and the external filming was done in Capetown South Africa. Not really the location you associate with Mega-City 1!

It's best to downgrade your expectations. This is not a 200 million dollars gritty R rated film. It's a 40 million dollars gritty R rated film so the look of the city, the blocks, the malls, the bikes, the other vehicles etc will reflect that smaller budget.
AlexDeLarge87 - 5/17/2012, 3:31 PM
YES!!!!:D

Cant [frick]ing wait!

Give us the trailer please!

Eh, it's set in inside one city-block so we won't be seeing much of those things except in a few 'wides', so I think you should 'downgrade' your bullshit as to what this film is representing and has since the start.
soforizo - 5/17/2012, 3:33 PM
District 9 was crap; expected a much better movie and not some propaganda film.

I'm hoping for this to be better than the one with Stallone, but I don't like this costume as much as the old one. The visor design seems impractical, with the red sticking out blocking part of his visual field.
dreddhead123 - 5/17/2012, 3:36 PM
The timing of this film could be a stroke of genius.* Judge Dredd is the ideal character to change people's perception of comic book heroes. After the Avengers, Batman Dark Knight Rises, Spider-Man 4, Dredd stands out because he's not a conventional superhero.

DNA should make a point that this isn't another superhero comic book character. This is Judge Dredd - Judge of Mega-City 1. He doesn't do 'super-powers'. :) That sort of approach could be used to market the film.

*September will be a tough month to sell Dredd to the public, though.

CorndogBurglar - 5/17/2012, 3:37 PM
@ dreddhead

But your misunderstanding what he said. He NEVER said Mega City One was going to look like a shanty town like District 9. He is comparing the style of the movie. Im not sure where u got that from.
dreddhead123 - 5/17/2012, 3:37 PM
"Eh, it's set in inside one city-block so we won't be seeing much of those things except in a few 'wides', so I think you should 'downgrade' your bullshit as to what this film is representing and has since the start."

My bullshit?

Geez!
dreddhead123 - 5/17/2012, 3:40 PM
"But your misunderstanding what he said. He NEVER said Mega City One was going to look like a shanty town like District 9. He is comparing the style of the movie. Im not sure where u got that from."

Lena Headey (plays Ma-Ma in the film) confirmed MC-1 was like a shanty town. Her exact words:

"And it’s set up in this concrete sort of shanty town — it’s shanty but they’re blocks — concrete favelas.”

http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/judge-dredd/19157/game-of-thrones-lena-headey-talks-dredd

Her words, not mine. And MC-1 is not a concrete sort of shanty town. DNA/IM Global's vison of Dredd's world is entirely wrong.
dreddhead123 - 5/17/2012, 3:47 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if the film is really cheap looking. It's worth pointing out the only person to praise the film is one of the producers!

If someone with no connection to the making of Dredd sees the film and says "Dredd 2012 captures the look of the comic book, the city is similar to the original version" then I'll be fine to admit I was wrong but all the stuff so far has been about a *shanty town Mega-City 1* and this is nothing like 2000AD's Judge Dredd. If the producers were to say: "we couldn't make the city as it looks in the comic because it would cost too much" - fair enough, that is an honest explanation, but if they think they can get away with shanty town MC-1 and Dredd chasing 20th century vehicles, I think they're deluding themselves. I predict a backlash.

Let's see what the trailer brings.

INSTANTJUSTICE - 5/17/2012, 3:51 PM
*September will be a tough month to sell Dredd to the public, though."-dreddhead123

Why?

No tougher than at any other month but there's practically no competition for Dredd in September.

and 'sort of shanty town' is not 'a shanty town' she's not talking 'literally' and she called it a 'concrete favela'. Not the same thing. Subtlety is lost on you.
dreddhead123 - 5/17/2012, 3:54 PM
If she says shanty town then it's a shanty town. I don't see any misunderstanding in what she said.
INSTANTJUSTICE - 5/17/2012, 3:56 PM
She didn't only say shanty town though, so taking her out of context doesn't make it any more true in the 'real world'.
jimoakley666 - 5/17/2012, 4:04 PM
From the sounds of it, the reason there isn't a trailer yet is due to the fact that they were showing / shopping this to potential distributors. That means, once someone picks it up, THEY will market it. And if it's as good as it sounds (no one walking out at Cannes is [frick]ing rare!) they'll market it's arse off.

Sometimes it pisses me off when they market films over a year in advance. You want to see the damned thing there and then but have to wait. I'd rather a big rash of ads a month or two before release. Sometimes you just go past it, otherwise.
BlueHawaiiSurfer - 5/17/2012, 4:15 PM
Really hoping they nail this. Been reading JD since the 80's, can't wait!!
TruePunishment - 5/17/2012, 5:21 PM
I'm going to be pissed if this song doesn't end up in the movie!

How about Urban for Baldur in Thor 2?
TruePunishment - 5/17/2012, 6:53 PM
Haha be my guest!
TruePunishment - 5/17/2012, 7:01 PM
Coolio! I'm kind of surprised Baldur wasn't in Thor, but I guess he would be pretty similar to Heimdal.
TruePunishment - 5/17/2012, 7:27 PM
Indeed!
MrChuff - 5/18/2012, 1:02 AM
@INSTANTJUSTICE - Your constant positive support of the Dredd flick is commendable.
I like you.
