Kevin Feige Promises "A Major NEW Antagonist" In THOR 2 And Debunks Thanos Speculation

Discussing the success of Marvel's The Avengers and commenting briefly on the different side of Asgard we should expect in Thor 2, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige confirms that the God of Thunder won't be taking on the Mad Titan in his solo sequel.

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has shared his thoughts on the massive box office success of The Avengers (which just yesterday became the fastest film to gross $500 million domestically). "I was just hoping it would beat the opening weekend of Iron Man 2, which was the biggest opening weekend for any Marvel Studios movie. We did 80 or 90 million above that. As the numbers started coming in on Friday night, Saturday night, Sunday night, they just kept getting bigger and bigger, into areas I would never in a million years have believed."

The Avengers was not the finale for us," he reiterates, making it clear that Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble is far from the conclusion of everything the studio has been working towards. "It was a giant, giant marker, but it was never the finale. We are already well into the plan for the next phase of our little cinematic universe." That next phase includes Thor 2, and Feige had this to say about what we should expect from the sequel. "We're going to see the other side of Asgard. It's not all polished and golden in this film. And the events of Avengers will have affected Thor for sure. His relationship with Loki will continue to evolve, and the biggest part is Natalie and Thor returning with Jane Foster."

After Loki failed Thanos in The Avengers, many fans assumed that he'll be heading to Asgard seeking his revenge and a chance to get his hands on the Infinity Gauntlet. Well, the Marvel Studios boss was quick to stamp that rumour out when the magazine put the idea to him. However, he did promise the introduction of an altogether different bad guy for the God of Thunder to face off against (who will presumably be played by Mads Mikkelsen). "No, future, future. But there will be a major new villain. A major, major new antagonist..."

"We are already well into the plan for the next phase of our little cinematic universe"

Little Cinematic Universe.

You gotta love Fiege's humility.
This is why Marvel Studios is rocking right now. They find a balance that serves the fans and the general public. And like the Avengers, as huge of a success it is, it was only the beginning!!! THese guys are thinking way ahead of the curve here.
dahamma - 5/28/2012, 7:03 AM
Surtur!!!! for THor 2!!!
BrotherStarkofMABMindz - 5/28/2012, 7:07 AM
Malekith? Surtur? Enchantress + Executioner?
Rodimus9 - 5/28/2012, 7:13 AM
I wonder who would play executioner. He'd have to be bigger than Hemsworth and able to act.
R888 - 5/28/2012, 7:13 AM
So will thanos be in the credits scene then can't wait
Bring on Enchantress and Executioner :)
thalidomide - 5/28/2012, 7:20 AM
I wish it's Surtur.

dellamorte1872 - 5/28/2012, 7:23 AM
he actually gave it all away. it wont be ENCHANTRESS it'll be a dude from the less glossy side of ASGARD not a world of privilege; it'll be EXECUTIONER!

@thalidomide

The most awesome scene ever in comic book films
thalidomide - 5/28/2012, 7:35 AM
@R888

That's the most awesome but this is the most iconic scene in CBM history :p

Jobu - 5/28/2012, 7:40 AM
@R888 - Couldn't agee more.
marvelstudios - 5/28/2012, 7:51 AM
fk that thor and hulk gif is awesome.

i have complete faith that iron man 3 and thor 2 will top their predecessors
coalesce - 5/28/2012, 7:51 AM
Doubt it's the Silver Surfer, as I think those rights are with another studio. Hercules wouldn't be a bad choice, but he's a good guy in the end, and having him in may start to resemble an old-time sword and sandals epic.
maximus - 5/28/2012, 7:57 AM
Sweet more is always good DC take notes you have potential

That is cool!

I like the sweat or whatever it is that is coming of Mjölner.
Timerider84 - 5/28/2012, 8:02 AM
Charlize Theron for Enchantress
thunderforce - 5/28/2012, 8:05 AM
I thought that scene was the reason hulk sucker punched Thor later on .
dmm5 - 5/28/2012, 8:08 AM
Hope Asgard doesn't change, just a darker tone maybe. It was beautiful in the first movie.
superotherside - 5/28/2012, 8:14 AM
Awesome. I think it's Subtur.

thalidomide Awesome gif sir! That video is the most iconic scene like ever IMO. :D

It was kind of a dumb theory. Yeah, they introduced the antagonist of the first Avengers movie in the first Thor movie, but to my knowledge Thanos doesn't have any strong link to Thor.
marknjoanna - 5/28/2012, 8:16 AM
Rodimus9 - 5/28/2012, 7:13 AM
Report Comment I wonder who would play executioner. He'd have to be bigger than Hemsworth and able to act

not if nolan did it he wouldnt. just look at the miget he came up with for tdks bane lmao.
JoeMomma29 - 5/28/2012, 8:16 AM
Hopefully they will depict Asgard correctly this could be a really great film and not a semi success as the First Thor.

the guy with thanos said if we dont get the cube (or whatever) there is no place you can hide,so a strong link may be on its way.
thunderforce - 5/28/2012, 8:22 AM
I think they could change Asgard if they wanted too , they could relocate to another realm because the rainbow bridge is trashed .
aztecRaingod - 5/28/2012, 8:31 AM
This sounds way bigger than the Executioner. Surtur, maybe.
SageMode - 5/28/2012, 8:34 AM
I can't wait to see this.
ThePowerCosmic - 5/28/2012, 8:45 AM
I don't understand why not Thanos. Why would you introduce Thanos in the Avengers and then use him in a Guardians of the galaxy movie? The Other said to challenge HUMANS would be "To Court Death" so does that mean Thanos will fight Earth's forces?

But Feige said Thanos would be revealed in a GofG film. Does this make sense to anybody? The Cube and the Infinity Gauntlet are in Asgard! What the Hell is going on! Somebody explain!

Not complaining, I love this stuff!
mstaley3000 - 5/28/2012, 8:54 AM
No love for the Norn Queen? How about Hela? Out of all the characters Marvel currently controls, Thor probably has the deepest bench. Not only are they strong they are also cunning. They also include family members and one thing I know is that Odin is not one of Jane Foster's fans.
AlexDeLarge87 - 5/28/2012, 8:56 AM
If Thanos is going to appear somewhere it has to be The Avengers 2.

Cant wait to see who the villain new coming villain is.
Kinda hoping Malekith or Surtur.

They could show someone steal the gauntlet from Asgard and in the last scene that someone to give it to Thanos.
Loki perhaps.
ThePowerCosmic - 5/28/2012, 9:08 AM
Surtur probably would not be a character played by an actor. Wouldn't he be CGI unless his look changed drastically. Don't think they would hire a great actor and cover him in CGI. Yes, I know the Hulk was, but he was Banner a lot of the time.
TheLivingTribunal - 5/28/2012, 9:09 AM
Only thing I am wondering is the Guardians of the Galaxy take place in the 31st century so unless you have Thanos from that time, then it doesn't make sense why he appears in the Avengers. Granted Thanos father is Kronos, and the time gem grants time travel, but I still think he will appear in an Avengers movie also.
ThePowerCosmic - 5/28/2012, 9:10 AM
That would be great...Loki giving up the Gauntlet at the end of Thor 2 so Thanos doesn't kill him. Go with that Feige!
ThePowerCosmic - 5/28/2012, 9:11 AM
They May Just make the GofG film take place at the same time. I could see them make that change. They are a cosmic group most people won't pay attention to when it takes place.
