UPDATE: BOX OFFICE: MADAGASCAR Edges Out PROMETHEUS For The #1 Spot

Despite early estimates claiming that Prometheus would finish the weekend with a total of $68M weekend, DreamWorks Animation's Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted has edged it out for the #1 spot in North America. Read on for details and an update on Marvel's The Avengers.

Deadline reports that Ridley Scott's Prometheus looks likely to finish the weekend with $49.5M (although other analysts are predicting a final figure closer to $50M). Despite there being talk that it would manage to hold off competition from animated feature, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted - which it did actually manage to do on Friday - that ended up finishing with $59.6M thanks to a big boost from children being at home. Prometheus took $21.4M on Friday, $16.1M on Saturday and $12.4M on Sunday according to @ERCboxoffice. It's debatable whether or not this is a disappointment for Fox as they quite conservatively estimated a weekend total of $56M on Friday and this figure obviously falls short of that. However, an opening of nearly $50M is still very impressive for an R-Rated flick and it exceeds their initial their initial estimate of $30M-$35M. Marvel's The Avengers finished fifth with $10.8M, taking its domestic total to an incredible $571.8M.

UPDATE: @ERCboxoffice now tells us that the film has made a total of $91.5M internationally, thereby taking its current worldwide cume to $141.5M and pretty much guaranteeing a sequel due to the fact the budget for Prometheus was reported $130M.

In the distant future, two superpowers control Earth and fight each other for all the solar system's natural resources. The only people I have heard that bated the movie was people expecting that direct link between this and Alien. And now I see why Ridley kept saying it was not because people keep comparing it to it and I even read some reviews in which reviewers clearly did. Now I know some of you may not have this pressumption in their head and may genuinely not liked this movie but as of now I completley understand why Ridley Scott kept dogging the questions about this being a preview.

I dont think fans were looking for another Alien movie. I know for myself was looking for a cross over or direct connection to Alien. Yeah the ending is sort of a connection but not a direct connection. The ending leaves you asking more questions. For instance look how everyone is debating if the creature at the end is a queen or not, or is a first step in the evolution to a true Xeno. Hopefully there will be one or two more movies that will connect the two franchises.

Prometheus was pretty shit, so this comes as a pleasant surprise (although I'd love to see The Avengers make a miraculous comeback), based on how well-regarded Ridley Scott is as a director, Prometheus was the most disappointing film I've seen since X-Men Origins: Wolverine... or Green Lantern. Amazing effects, stunning cinematography, and brilliant acting from Michael Fassbender (Idris Elba and Charlize Theron are pretty good too) is all this film has going for it - script is appalling, story is predictable and cliched, and all the 'questions' that were supposed to make us think were completely forgettable.

@Neo yeah it was posted a few days ago

Not very surprising. The reviews have been very mixed on it and what I have heard from my friends hasn't been too positive on it. I'm pretty much hearing that the visuals are great, but the rest falls flat. Pretty much what Avatar delivered for me.

IronFan93@ I don't want to give out any spoilers by giving specific reasons, but there are a lot of people who have seen the film and though it has its own story, feel it's connection to Alien is very evident.

And to the people saying that the film is being bashed solely on fans' disappointment that Prometheus didn't have stronger ties to Alien - I've never watched Alien. I'm not sure I even want to after watching Prometheus.

@Ranger14 the Avatar comparisons sound about right to me, although I have to say Prometheus is better than Avatar in almost every way, although I don't really like either film.

"Rotten Tomatoes has it at a 74. That's pretty good."

It's a different world now when a low to mid "C" grade is considered pretty good. That used to mean very average.

@csdot yeah I'm getting it with a different article. There's also an article that has been posted in the news section that redirects to Euro 2012 coverage (to be fair it is advertised as a link to Euro 2012). Is there any way to contact the admins to see if they can fix the problem?

"Rotten Tomatoes has it at a 74. That's pretty good."

Rotten Tomatoes have their own opinions... and they've been wrong before. I don't rely too much on them since I know they've made some questionable numbers on some movies that have NO business being given a higher ranking.

@Gambit89 I felt the score was so out of place, quite lighthearted for a dramatic movie. Writing completely sucked! Damon Lindelof needs to go away somewhere and never return. So much potential!

SPOILER ALERT!!! SKIP RIGHT OVER MY COMMENT IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE YET... I apologize if anyone read my comment before I attached the warning.

I definitely understand some questions not being answered like"Why did the engineers create us in the first place..." but this movie raised ton of questions, good ones in fact, just to not answer any of them and left a lot of the plot and story up to assumption.

Why did the "Engineer" at the beginning of the movie drink what was so obviously a big cop'o'death?

What in the cave paintings made the archeologist think that we were Engineered? Primative humans wouldn't have any idea what that is, so it wouldn't be on the cave paintings. If "because I choose to believe it" was supposed to answer that in the move, thats horrible, which leads to the next question.

How the hell did the archeologists convince a mega-corporation to invest ONE TRILLION DOLLARS in finding the "Engineers". Yes the old man was desperate not to die, but this goes back to why do they think that we were engineered in the first place.

How did the geologist that released "puppy" mapping drones, not find his way out of the cave. One of the best geologists in the world, so it couldn't have been his first cave.

The 2 lost scientists were attacked in the cave, one became a zombie and the other appeared to be "impregnated" Alien style. What ever happened to that guy?

Why did the Android poison the male archeologist? By the androids behavior, we could make a few different assumption, but they would be just that, assumptions, not story.

Why did the "Engineers" base, facility, or whatever look so "Low tech"??? This bugged the hell out of me. So they were hopping across the galaxy dozens of eons ago, and their base of operations looks like the temple of doom?! They kept extinction level viruses in stone vases??? No labs or anything. The only advanced technology found was their ship.

Why does the "Engineers" want us dead? I mean, they obvious came back to earth and interacted with us, hence all of the cave paintings, etc. I mean, all of our ancient languages originated with theirs, right? That's how the android learned how to speak it. So, why to they want to exterminate us all of a sudden? I understand maybe this being left for a sequel, but it leads to the next question...

Why did the last living "Engineer" IMMEDIATELY upon waking kill everyone. Honestly, I had assumed(because the movie didn't say, of course) that it was because he was a soldier and view them as a treat or hostile invaders. But THEN he decided to, without hesitation, make a bee line to earth to kill everyone there??? Dude, you were just woken up after thousands of years to realize that all of your comrads are dead and the first thing on your mind is to exterminate everyone on earth? That was way to radical to go without explanation...

great movie for adults who appretiate the art of the slow burn and are not vexed when things dont end in absolutes. Maybe not the right film for the hyper-distracted video game entertained, IPOD zombified, IPHONE lobotomized generation of ADD kids that make up the majority of todays youth. For those of us who have not lost the ability to ponder...we are entertained.

i was really looking forward to this movie and i know it was supposed to be a stand alone movie from the alien universe that being said it tryed so hard to be the first alien movie and when that other guy got infected he looked like that guy from the first thing movie i hated it and i have a question that surgery scene how come ripley was not able to do that in alien 3 its like a 100 years later from this movie.

THANK YOU MOONDOGGYX!^ You just asked almost ALL of the questions I did after seeing it twice....I really wish they would have explained more, I blame that all on LINDELOFs terrible writing... How does a guy get infected, have sex with a girl and get her preg with a squid baby who grows to be massive who in turn looks like a giant face hugger who inpregs the Jockey create a Xeno??? It just made no sense.... And seemed like Holloways infection would have turned him into a Jockey, but who knows since they didn't explain or expand on much....

SPOILER ALERT!!!

@Prot3ctor - Even with with all of my gripes, i have to agree with you. Everything from the acting and directing to the SFX is definitely A+ material to me. Only the story/plot fell flat. Prometheus reminds me of X-Men: First Class in that aspect B is definitely a fair grade for this movie

@gaikinger - Pondering os one thing, but the movie raised some good questions in the first 2 acts. I was really invested in finding the answers along with the characters. But when it was time for the film to put out, so to speak, they just killed everyone off. The main character was so distraught and desperate at the lack of answers at the end of the movie that instead of going home to safety, she flew into what can only be considered certain death, judging by the reception they received from just 1 "Engineer", just to get any answer at all. The audience was left with just as much information as she was and I felt just as desperate for answers.
