Budget For THE LONE RANGER Increases; Gore Verbinski's Spending Is "Out Of Control"

Disney clearly didn't learn their lesson after big budget flick John Carter flopped at the box office earlier this year as their measures to cut costs on The Lone Ranger have reportedly failed, taking it back to over $250 million.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that despite production being halted being last year and an expensive train sequence being scrapped, rewrites are once again underway in order to try and trim the budget of Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger. Disney were concerned about costs and managed to bring it down to around $215 million, but the site has now been told by insiders that the film is already behind schedule and the budget has once again soared up towards the $250 million mark. It may have even surpassed that figure.

Disney are trying to get the director to cut more scenes from the film, although those close to the project claim that these expenses come as no surprise. As well as being heavy on visual effects, Verbinski has decided that they should build their own trains from scratch rather than hiring existing ones. The severe weather (such as wind and dust storms) has also caused damage to the set, and one insider had this to say about the situation, "It's out of control, but if you were going to bet on anyone, it would be on Gore, Johnny and Jerry."

STARRING:

Armie Hammer as John Reid, the Lone Ranger
Johnny Depp as Tonto
William Fichtner as Butch Cavendish
Ruth Wilson as Rebecca Reid
James Badge Dale as Dan Reid
Tom Wilkinson as Latham Cole
Barry Pepper as Captain Jay Fuller
Helena Bonham Carter as Red
Mason Cook as Will

RELEASE DATE: May 31st, 2013.

Seriously, the original series didn't have a budget like that, why on God's green earth does a movie about a masked cowboy and his Native American partner need the budget of some superhero comic book movies? Is Tonto summoning fire from the the ground to consume the bandits...or maybe Lone Ranger's horse can fly...I mean come on...this cost is ridiculous.

Im betting that now Johnny Depp with grow wings and metallic horns made of acid and Toto will transform into a 50 foot city made of rocks.

Thats why they changed the budget.

Don't you understand you have to have CGI sand in a Western. ....

I'm pretty sure 25 percent of every one of these budgets is some type of mob style cook the books pocket the money swag for top exec in Hollywood...

Vtopa - I am a massive Pirates fan, but this movie does not interest me in the slightest. I think this movie is going to make John Carter look like a record breaking blockbuster.

Amazing. If you adjusted the costs to 2012 dollars, I'll bet that every Lone Ranger TV episode and movie ever filmed didn't cost $250 million combined. I wouldn't be surprised if that cumulative total was one half, even one quarter that amount or less.

I could understand if this film was like John Carter, set on another planet, with all kinds of expensive CGI needed for the aliens and alien monsters that appear in the film. But the Lone Ranger? It's a f*cking WESTERN. Cowboys and Indians. Pretty basic stuff. What kind of CGI do you need to shoot that?

I was a huge fan of the Lone Ranger TV show. I have no interest in this movie though, it smells like a flop that will make John Carter look like a stellar success. And Dark Shadows has proven that you can't sell tickets on Depp's name alone.

It's 2012. I have to ask...does anyone still care about the Lone Ranger? Is he even relevant in today's time? I'm guessing this movie will do as well in theaters as Battleship.
DeadPoolTX

Last I heard Johnny 'Greedy SOB' Depp's salary is $75M so that is probably why this cluster[frick] of a flop waiting to happen is $250M.

MadJakHatesSpinoffs I care about the Lone Ranger, but not about this movie. This isn't the Lone Ranger it's Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinsky destroying the characters. I have been a Lone Ranger fan since I was a kid and will not even rent this movie much less pay to see it in a theater.

vtopa

MrsTonyStark0507: First Pirates was entertaining. The last three were progressively worse, and 4 was horrid. Its more from the Jerry Bruckheimer school of film making. Overwhelm the audience with special effects and grandiosity and watch the money roll in. JOhnny Depp has made $150 million (that is NOT an exaggeration) off of his involvement in these films and no doubt part of that fat $250 million is slated for him on this disaster.
