UPDATE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Coming May 16th, 2014

Following earlier reports that the Guardians of the Galaxy are heading to the big screen, Variety now confirm that the movie will be released on May 16th, 2014 and reveal that the film already has a screenwriter and completed first draft.

Earlier today, Latino Review revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy is Marvel's other 2014 movie. Variety has now confirmed this rumour (adding further credibility to the initial claims) and says that the studio are indeed planning to release it on May 16th, 2014. They mention that their reason for travelling back in time from the 31st Century is to, "help to battle the Badoon, an evil alien race that attempts to conquer Earth's solar system." However, it is not made clear whether or not this is the exact direction in which the film will go, although it matches up with what we heard earlier today. Apparently, Marvel are very happy with the script written by Nicole Perlman, a relative unknown who came out of Disney's screenwriting program. Their sources also tell them that the studio has prioritized this over Black Panther, although Marvel Studios is also said to be working on Ant-Man, Dr. Strange and The Inhumans (as well as The Avengers 2 in 2015).

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter also claims to have heard from reliable sources that a Guardians of the Galaxy movie will be announced at this year's San Diego Comic-Con and reveal that, "Those in the know say the project is in line with Avengers in tone in the sense there is plenty of comedic elements on display." Nicole Perlman has written two drafts of the screenplay (she also impressed Marvel with a Black Widow solo script) and worked on Thor. Marvel is said to be on the hunt for a director.

I'm stoker for this movie and all but does that mean no Black Panther? I'm not going to lie I will be extremely upset if we don't get a Black Panther film soon or have him in Avengers 2.

superotherside - 6/28/2012, 6:10 PM
Awesome! Can't wait! Perhaps they could even introduce Carol Danvers someway in some cameo or something!
Bark4Soul - 6/28/2012, 6:11 PM
Yawn...unless this has Nova, Silver Surfer, Quasar, and other more noticeable marvel characters...this might not be worth a damn, it could have them and I still don't care.
Greengo - 6/28/2012, 6:11 PM
I'd like to see the raccoon in it but skeptical about it happening.

I sure as [frick] hope they're doing Black Panther!!!!!!!!!!!
CyberBishop - 6/28/2012, 6:11 PM
Hell yeah!!!!
CBMM1 - 6/28/2012, 6:11 PM
AWESOME! CAN'T WAIT! At least one production company has their shit together with getting CBMs out.
JordanKing - 6/28/2012, 6:12 PM
As cool as Ant-Man and Black Panther could be, I think they made the right decision. Enough of these superhero origins for now, time to go full cosmic!
95 - 6/28/2012, 6:12 PM
Yes. Yes. Good!
AmazingFantasy - 6/28/2012, 6:14 PM
[frick]ING.SO. MUCH. WIN

So DC but MARVEL has you beat already.
felixxx - 6/28/2012, 6:15 PM
Im sorry but i think this is going to fail. No one knows who any of the guys are (aside from fans). Im a marvel fan and ive never found any of these characters interesting. I hope im wrong, but I see another "Green Lantern" here. (called GL being a complete FAIL from the first pictures i seen)
DrDoom - 6/28/2012, 6:15 PM
You know what? I'm going to believe that Marvel knows what they're doing. If they like the script, then I have more faith.
CPBuff22 - 6/28/2012, 6:15 PM
awesomem131 - 6/28/2012, 6:16 PM
no black panther?
Asterisk - 6/28/2012, 6:17 PM
I wanted Black Panther, but heck I'm not going to complain. This is awesome!
CorndogBurglar - 6/28/2012, 6:18 PM
Im willing to bet the people who dont want this have never read a single comic with the guardians of the galaxy. Which isnt surprising considering the amount of people on this site that dont know Dick.about comics.
drfate - 6/28/2012, 6:19 PM
not familiar with these guys, but anything with a damn talking racoon is shit. like Howard the Duck shit. looks like a BAD choice to me Marvel. Impress me.
JordanKing - 6/28/2012, 6:19 PM
Nobody apart from the fans gave a rat's ass about Iron Man, then he released a little film in '08. Same with Marvel's Thor, who cared? Hulk had a poor run in cinemas, yet turned out to be the stand out in the Avengers.

In other words, it wouldn't hurt to give anything a chance.
Giznad - 6/28/2012, 6:19 PM
<<<<<<<<<<< stoked
AmazingFantasy - 6/28/2012, 6:20 PM
Avengers+Guardians vs Thanos would-

There isnt a single word for that emotion.
TheDesertGorilla - 6/28/2012, 6:21 PM
Marvel will now show DC how to make an awesome space opera comic book film!
stumbleMaster57 - 6/28/2012, 6:22 PM
Am i the only one who is dissapointed about this? I don't understand how this will fit in with the MCU. Antman or black panther would have been so much better. Not only that, but production for ant man has been going on forever and he and wasp are necessary characters for avengers 2.

Please don't let me down Marvel.
MrAgamotto - 6/28/2012, 6:23 PM

MY GOD! Its going be the greatest thing in the history of humanity! And, IMO, it would more dificult to see what are they going to do with the fact that Phylla vell is lesbian and dates Moondragon, that if Rocket Raccoon will be in the movie or not.
DraculaX - 6/28/2012, 6:23 PM
Marvel is on a roll!
angus666 - 6/28/2012, 6:23 PM
From somebody who doesn't know anything about them, it looks stupid.
coalesce - 6/28/2012, 6:23 PM
Was hoping for The Inhumans, but hey, like JKM said, this can only help the MCU since it's all being done in-house.
ATrueHero1987 - 6/28/2012, 6:23 PM
I wished it was Black Panther. Anyway, now I really need to get caught up on the more cosmic side of Marvel.
Benjamitesandwich - 6/28/2012, 6:23 PM
Heck yes!

I would love to see the original lineup!

Although, if they went for the mode
bagadoosh - 6/28/2012, 6:23 PM
please don't hate on RR until you give the comic a read , I was very skeptical of the character at first but that little shit grows on you
CaptainObvious - 6/28/2012, 6:24 PM
This is interesting. I was expecting Black Panther or Ant-Man, but GOTG is definetly something I'm looking forward to.
bagadoosh - 6/28/2012, 6:24 PM
IMO you can't have thanos without adam warlock so I'm really glad their doing this
