BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Has The Second Biggest Opening Of 2012 In The UK

While the UK is nowhere near as big a market as North America when it comes to box office totals, superhero films are equally as well-received on this side of the Pond. Want proof? Well, The Amazing Spider-Man has the second biggest opening of 2012. Read on for details.

The Amazing Spider-Man ended up finishing a few million dollars below estimates in the US last week, but Marc Webb's reboot has still been a hit for Sony Pictures and a sequel shouldn't be too far away. Digital Spy now reports that the film (starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans) has opened with over £11 million, giving it the second highest debut of 2012 behind only Avengers Assemble - as it was known in the UK - which earned a whopping £15.78 million. The total made by The Amazing Spider-Man is more than every other film in the Top 10 combined as it held off competition from the likes of Ice Age 4: Continental Drift, The Five-Year Engagement and Katy Perry: Part of Me.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

STARRING:

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy
Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors/The Lizard
Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben
Sally Fields as Aunt May
Denis Leary as George Stacy

RELEASE DATE: Out Now.

Being a British fan myself, i thoroughly enjoyed the film but The Dark Knight Rises will finish its reign at number 1 I think!

Orehrepus - 7/11/2012, 4:11 AM
What's the global number now? I really hope this gets a sequel. It's an awesome movie and it deserves a sequel, or several sequels!
SUPERMAN2013 - 7/11/2012, 4:13 AM
I think the dark knight will do well just because people will have high expectations from the last,so even if it ends up being a shit movie it would still make alot of money,it wont blow avengers out of the water though
BenderDickCumPatch - 7/11/2012, 4:19 AM

GO SPIDEY GO.

UncleJimmy - 7/11/2012, 4:25 AM

@SirWinsalot- STOP FOR [frick]S SAKE YOU WHINY BITCH. All I hear from you is "TDKR will own this, this sucks, Marvel Turd this and Marvelite that"
Jeez just shut up and enjoy something apart from TDKR.
FilmsFan - 7/11/2012, 4:34 AM
It's interesting cuz in UK, The Dark Knight is still the highest grossing SuperHero film!
The Dark Knight did almost 90 million$.
Avengers did 77+ million$.
While SpiderMan-3 did 67 million$!

"Dark Knight" brand is a huge thing here as well; I think if TDKR is good enough it can do 100 million$ in UK!!
Waiting ... Waiting ... July20 coming!!!

[frick] yeah Spider-Man!
Tajin88 - 7/11/2012, 5:02 AM
TASM was better than the avengers, which was also good, but its huge success comes from the new design, from the different marvel heroes in one movie. If only it had a real story and score plus spiderman in it, then it would have been the best CBM, but maybe in the future.

TASM really surprised me.
SuperSomething616 - 7/11/2012, 5:14 AM
Saw it...loved it...better than Raimis films put together...will defo see again!!!
Maxi91291 - 7/11/2012, 5:14 AM
Well deserved ... This movie is awesome ... Some of you do youselves a favor and stop bringing up other movies ... You think this makes you look like some kind of credible movie critics ..... :D ... just stop ... you dont have to point out things that are obvious , that doesnt make you smarter or more sophisticated
TheMaster2011 - 7/11/2012, 5:31 AM
Should be 1st. The Amazing Spider-Man was the best movie of 2012 so far (Will probably remain there)
BenderDickCumPatch - 7/11/2012, 5:39 AM
@Vegakingblade-

CrowPirate1 - 7/11/2012, 6:06 AM
I frankly am very tired of the DC vs Marvel crap. I am just happy any comic movie is doing great!!!

That said, Is the Lizard playing an electric piano in the toon above me? wonder what song he'd play? hmmmmmmmmm
CPBuff22 - 7/11/2012, 6:08 AM

rea1dea1stee1 - 7/11/2012, 6:17 AM
Great film!! bring on a second!! AND THAT IS ALL!!!
BattlinMurdock - 7/11/2012, 6:22 AM
Can we stop with the "Stop bringing up TDKR in a Spider-Man thread!" shouts?

Because it's a Box Office thread, and discussing a film's box office competition should be allowed.

I'll say that saying that saying a movie sucks compared to one that hasn't come out yet, though, is the most childish of insults. We need to enjoy 2012 while it's the best superhero movie year of all time. Next year, we'll have some good cbms, but they won't have near the hyped level of excitement as 2012.
Opt1mu5Pr1m4l - 7/11/2012, 6:29 AM
Fair play The Amazing Spider-men was bloody awesome. Can't wait for the sequel. Enter Norman Osborn. Can't believe Captain George Stacey got killed off. I think Webb could've waited til the sequel to kill him off.
Godzillafart - 7/11/2012, 6:54 AM
Not only was TASM better than all the Raimi movies, it was better than many of the Marvel movies and Batman Begins. I was very pleasantly surprised by this.

Matador - 7/11/2012, 7:07 AM
WHAT Captain Stacy got killed off in the first movie!? I haven't seen it yet.

And personally as long as a CBM knocks the hell out of Titanic from the number one spot in my time I'll be a happy man.
Spidey31 - 7/11/2012, 7:14 AM
TDKR Won't beat TASM at the foreign box office, spiderman always beats out every super hero in the foreign box office
DragonofDarknessXIII - 7/11/2012, 7:14 AM
Wouldn't it be funny if the three top openings in the UK were all superhero films?
Ceejay - 7/11/2012, 7:30 AM
Want to talk real Box Office and not propaganda?

Well here's the facts:

Spider-man 1 opened to a $13 million weekend in the UK while The Amazing Spider-man could only manage $11 million.

Just for the record, Spider-man 2 made $16 million and Spider-man 3 made $23 million openings in the UK!

Spider-man 1 opened in just 3,615 screens back in 2002 and made over $151 million in 7 days. But The Amazing Spider-man opened in 4,318 screens and even with boosted prices with 3D showings could only manage $144 million!

Just for the record again, Spider-man 2 made $192 million (4,152 screens) and Spider-man 3 made $182 million (4,252 screens) in 7 days, no 3D assists for either!

The new Spider-man film suffers form very pedestrian storytelling and a banal villain. It tries to be more serious and emotional than the Raimi movies but in doing so only ends up less entertaining to watch. The movie just doesn't do enough to justify a reboot instead of a continuation and its lower than expected box office will still make it a financial hit but in terms of the box office potential the Raimi movies realized, this flick is falling short big-time!
Ceejay - 7/11/2012, 7:39 AM
And just for a CBM reboot comparison, Batman Begins had a $48 million opening weekend, 2nd largest out of all the Bat movies at that time. It also went on to be the biggest grossing Batman film both domestic and worldwide until The Dark Knight annihilated every record set by any bat-film in history.

This Spider-man "too-soon" reboot is simply not living up to its predecessors as well.
R888 - 7/11/2012, 7:47 AM
Awesome, the amazing spiderman was an awesome film
Minghagz - 7/11/2012, 8:07 AM
"held off competition from the likes of Ice Age 4: Continental Drift, The Five-Year Engagement and Katy Perry: Part of Me."

LOL!
NOLANITE - 7/11/2012, 8:27 AM
TDKR will beat avengers and smash their records..

On a better note..

Welcome to Americas society tea
You're a true American in my eyes.
marvel72 - 7/11/2012, 8:37 AM
not bad, marvel regins supreme in the uk.

UrbanKnight - 7/11/2012, 10:05 AM
Ceejay@

True but there is room for improvement. Go spidey!
Spidey31 - 7/11/2012, 10:22 AM
@Ceejay first off SM3 left a bad taste in almost everyone's mouth so it Defiently plays a role. Spiderman 2 made less domestically. SM1 approval rating on RT is 60% thus further supporting why SM2 made less than SM1 and SM3 made the most out of all because of SM2. If the previous film was bad AND it's a too soon reboot its bound not to make as much as the previous films. TASM is the 2nd best overall with the Genereal Audince scoring A- with CinemaScore and a 84% with RT I would say its a pretty solid film with almost every Audince member. And with some it's the best out yet, I can assure you the sequel will make the most out of all and be the best out of all. Sorry but TASM just delivered and it's gonna have an Amazing sequel.
SkateandDestroy88 - 7/11/2012, 10:34 AM
All Rite Spiderman. Why all the hate girls. Spiderman was cooool. The Avengers was radicallness and holy f#ck i kind of get wood when thinking about uncomfortable waiting high as f#ck in line to get good seat and little ass theater where my friend all ready has tickets to see The MOTHER F#CKING DARK KNIGHT RISES YEAH!!!!!!!!!!
Spiderman was amazing. WORD.
TheWebSlinger - 7/11/2012, 11:12 AM
Seems that TDKR trolls/tryhards have a new found confidence, shame, cause to them only Nolan's films exist. They are under this idea that every Batman film has been top notch.
SpiderBob - 7/11/2012, 11:31 AM
Personally I know I'll end up loving all three CBM movies this year, they'll all be/are good in they're own right,my fav was Spidey but I loved Avengers and I know I'll love TDKR,I'm not particularly interested in what did better or worse cos they'll all be/are good movies if you're a CBM fan,Spidey ain't Batman and vice versa they're all their own thing, get a frikkin life or a girl friend and just enjoy them.
xcan28 - 7/11/2012, 12:20 PM
Sadly I broke my vow of not seeing this in a theatre, but silly kid made me go. Fortunately no $'s were spent from my pocket to view it.

I am glad to report though that the movie didn't disappoint. It was a fckin mess. Thanks Sony!

I will give them credit though as you could see that they tried to be ambitious with it, but it ended up being way too long for a near 2.5 hour movie which was probably closer to 3.5 hours until Sony realized that that was too long and cut out tons o material.

SPOILERS..................

Why did Papa Stacy feel the need to hunt Spidey over a 10+ foot Lizard when given the choice? IT'S a FCK'IN 10+ FOOT LIZARD THROWING CARS OFF BRIDGES AND ATTACKING PUBLIC SCHOOLS, but sure, let's hunt a 5'11 120lbs guy who webs up criminals... good call chief!

What happened to the school fight right after Stan Lee's cameo? Garfield had his mask off for no reason and Lizard was gone. Why??

The "heroic" moment at the end with Connors holding Spidey. After the initial stop, why didn't Petey say to Connors "No worries bro, I can stick to walls" instead of a pointless struggle to hold Spiderman up???

And WHAT the FCK was the point of that crane scene?? "He helped my kid, everyone works overtime!" WTF?? Did spidey forget that he can swing from ANY solid object IE; buildings??

And don't even get me started on a Hulk body + tail and goomba face = this movies version of the Lizard.

Absolute crap.

I hope you CBM'ers got plenty of Sony bucks for your awesome 4/5 reviews :)

XxSnakeProxX - 7/11/2012, 12:57 PM
^Pathetic to see how butthurt one could be simply because people enjoy a film they didnt. Talk about bitter..
SkateandDestroy88 - 7/11/2012, 1:06 PM
I thought TASM was great. Haters gonna hate. That'd be funny if some of the users talking all the smack on the Amazing spiderman was actually Kirsten Dunst or Tobey Maguire haha
xcan28 - 7/11/2012, 1:20 PM
SNAKE?? BELIEVE ME I only care about myself lol. I couldn't care less if you or any "butthurt" hated or loved a movie.

In my eyes, the movie sucked, plain and simple. At best a 5/10 on any scale.

How anyone above their teen years could think this movie was anywhere above a 5-6/10 is beyond me... UNLESS there were reasons, Sony $'s what?, to grade it higher.

MasterApoc81 - 7/11/2012, 5:43 PM
Movie wise ...TDKR will be a more gripping movie ..acting wise..more suspenseful for sure .....but avengers was just an event unlike any other it was amazing to pull off those characters together in one movie ...but u honestly cant compare batman to avengers ...they r totally two types of movies ....one more action and fantasy ....other more dramatic suspensful and hints or realism . TASM was another great marvel film ....i loved how they did it ...sony did great ...giving marvel more control room for how they did it .....fox realized that when marvel is allowed to do it ...it can be great ...thats why the new xmen first class ..pretty much a reboot was good as well loved how they did professor x and magneto and kevin bacon was great as shaw......the only other movie coming out that is gonna be a able to hit near the awesome event of avengers as in action and specticule is gonna be superman ....it has the potential to make a parr stab .....trust me ...he is the most iconic comic character of all time ...dc or marvel fan would have to agree ...people all over the world ...even people who dont even know comics ...know him ......with the powers he has and the villians they can use ...it could be a worthy event if done right i always said ....im hope man of steel is the superman movie ..comic fans deserve ....the fight the powers the earth at stake ...all that ...not say!!!!! its gonna be better than avengers ...but its more of a action fantasy event than tdkr ......tdkr ...will be the great of the films in terms of a full put together movie ...but the man of steel will be a event if it doesnt turn out to be another failed atempt. If it fails ..let me write the next try ....people want to see earth in jepordy...a powerful villlian for supes to fight.....think they did nice using zod instead of luther ...luther is burnt out ...he can be a secondary protagnist if need be ...they could do a braniac/lex in sequel...then on to doomsday or darksied
MasterApoc81 - 7/11/2012, 6:05 PM
TO BE A TRUE CBM FAN ...YOU SHOULD APPRECIATE AVENGERS, SPIDERMAN , AND BATMAN ...THEY R ALL GREAT FILMS AND SHOULD BE COMPARED BUT ENJOYED.........they r finally making good comicbook movies....be happy ....these batmans are the best batman films since the first time burton one with keaton and jack as joker..........this spiderman is the best so far .....spidey 1 and 2 were pretty goood but this felt more like him ..........the avengers was awesome period .....and cmon man of steel u can do it !!!!.....the only cbms im disappointed in is ghost rider and green lantern.....for diff reasons GL was done too close to comic and not enough action for GL and not the right villian to use for GL beginnning ..RR is a goood actor but since i liked his movies as a comedian its hard to take his dramatic acting serious but give the dude props .....he is not one dimentional...and would make a awesome deadpool.....GL ......ghost rider ....i mean they should made it more horror film like ...made the demons scary ...people scared out their minds ..inject ghostrider ...maybe mcG could done it well .....done mind nicolas cage but def mind the writing and the corny humor ...........GL since they did space as most the back drop ..maybe jj abrams could have been a better director choice.
MasterApoc81 - 7/11/2012, 6:26 PM
Ceejay .....also keeep in mind that was the first time spidey hit the big screeen and ...people didnt have a ton of visual effect driven movies to compete and the economy wasnt as bad .....got put the situation into prospective before comparing movies .....the amazing spiderman was btr for the most part then any of the previous three ....keeep all in mind when trying to compare movie totals
Opt1mu5Pr1m4l - 7/12/2012, 5:11 AM
