GREEN LANTERN Director Martin Campbell To Bring Back BLAKE'S 7 To Television

Classic British sci-fi series Blake's 7 (once adapted into a short-lived Marvel UK comic book) has been off the air for thirty years, but now Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, Green Lantern) has signed up to reimagine the series for a whole new audience. Hit the jump for details.

Deadline reports that Georgeville Television have teamed up with Green Lantern director Martin Campbell to bring back cult classic British sci-fi TV show, Blake's 7. He will direct the pilot (reimagined and written by Heroes' Joe Pokaski) which is currently being shopped to various US networks. The original series ran for four years back in 1978 and was later adapted into a comic book by Marvel UK; running for 23 issues in total. The site describes the series as revolving around, "A group of criminals convicted and given a harsh sentence who, en route to pay the ultimate price for their crimes, get a second chance. These criminals without a code will gain a calling - the opportunity to become most unlikely, but most sorely needed heroes of their time."

I hate how producers and suits bully directors into changing this, changing that, and the audience wants this or that. And then when the movie comes out all of the ownership is on the director. The invisible string pullers never get blamed.

I'm not saying that directors are innocent or powerless, but sometimes if they don't toe the line the get what Sam Raimi got.

I'm not saying this happened with green lantern but some CBMs stray so far away from the source material that they only share the hero's name.

sSo he got demoted to TV because of Green Lantern. At least he still gets to work behind a camera. If this fails, he will be directing a puppet show in his garage in 2014.

i use to love blake 7,its a classic sci-fi series.

i look forward to seeing what they do next with this show.

Martin Campbell really isn't that bad of a director. GL had many, many problems but I really do believe Campbell's direction was what made it somewhat watchable. He made the best of a lousy script and a mediocre cast with the good actors (Sarsgaard, Robbins and Bassett)reduced to bit-players.

As for the idea of a Blake's 7 reboot, as someone who spent most of the late 90s watching the original show on VHS during my childhood it's somewhat close to me, all I'm hoping is they don't mess it up and keep the spirit of the show intact. And, of course, when the show does end they go for the kick-ass ending the original show had rather than some feel-good Americanized ending that TV execs think audiences would respond better to.

Why are we referring to him as the Green Lanter director? Why remind us of one of his worst films when the guy made arguably the greatest Bond film of all time. Let's stick with "CASINO ROYALE Director Martin Campbell".

Also, TV isn't a demotion. Especially not for Campbell who has done a TON of TV.

And Finally, to write off a director after one bad movie is just childish. Grow up.

Martin Campbell is a good director and it wasn't his fault for Green Lantern (even tho I didn't hate it) it was the bad writing and script. Casino Royale was fantastic and hopefully we can see him do another Bond movie someday.

This guy still gets work? Nothing personal but when you make a 200 million dollar pice of crap, and that crap happens to be the first GL movie! I don't think you can be trusted.

blakes 7 is ready to be redone yes i think so it realy does look badly dated by todays standards.
a new series or movie though ?? or both may be but be advised the main reason blakes 7 is a cult tv show is its creator terry nation had serious links to another iconic tv series that in recent years has suffered badly from underfunding and industry not listening to fans that series is ofcourse dr who and in a small way its part of british heritage now so think and do well,
england expects.

sadly the green lantern failed due in part to the way the studio handled the making it was comittie led and too many wanted it there way a sequel is required and it needs to be made without delay but we know how Dc Warner seem to love to mess about before going ahead.
i liked the green lantern movie it had just that spark to make it better but its as if some accountant was red flagging every thing you know no cant do that too expensive etc spoilt a good movie.

astromerc- I totaly agree. It was original and got better as the years went on. Some shows got worse, but this one got better and they always did the unexpected, which I loved. Plus, Claudia Black was so hot in the final seasons.
