BOX OFFICE: THE BOURNE LEGACY Set To Take The #1 Spot From THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

The release of The Bourne Legacy was pushed back in order to keep the film out of the way of The Dark Knight Rises, and early tracking indicates that the decision may have paid off as it now looks set to earn $40 million this weekend. Read on for details.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that The Bourne Legacy should have no trouble walking away with the #1 spot this weekend as The Dark Knight Rises looks set to battle it out with Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis' The Campaign. The reboot of the Bourne franchise sees Jeremy Renner taking over from Matt Damon's Jason Bourne as Aaron Cross, although events in the film run parallel to events seen in the previous instalments. Early tracking indicates that The Bourne Legacy will debut with around $40 million. The Bourne Identity (2002) opened to $27.1 million, The Bourne Supremacy (2004) opened to $52.3 million, and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) opened to $69.3 million.

The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

STARRING:

Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross
Rachel Weisz as Stephanie Snyder
Edward Norton as Byer
Joan Allen as Pam Landy
David Strathairn as Noah Vosen
Albert Finney as Dr. Albert Hirsch
Scott Glenn as Ezra Kramer

RELEASE DATE: August 3rd 10th, 2012

TheRabbit - 8/9/2012, 5:43 PM
I would rather watch Renner than Damon hes to busy kissing Douglas in that liberace movie they are filming
BreakingBad - 8/9/2012, 5:44 PM
I think TDKR deserves so much more money than its getting, but well what can you do.

Really really sad that Campaigns apparently better than Bourne, ugh what a disappointment.
GoILL - 8/9/2012, 5:45 PM
@cipher Shit is crazy man.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 8/9/2012, 5:47 PM

GoILL - 8/9/2012, 5:53 PM
@cipher so damn true my friend, I hate reading articles that mention TDKR or TA because all the dumb shit really comes out. I enjoyed both films as well as TASM and that's it box office take and all that other bullshit doesn't matter to me since i'm not getting a damn dime of it.
GoILL - 8/9/2012, 5:54 PM
@yossarian NICE.
dellamorte1872 - 8/9/2012, 5:55 PM
already decided a while back i am NOT interested in this film; cable all the way!
Battabing - 8/9/2012, 5:58 PM
They're saying there's almost no action in this movie. That's kinda strange for a Bourne film.
Anyway, I'm not interested in looking at Renner's droopy eyebags for 2hrs.
lunesta - 8/9/2012, 5:59 PM
TASM WAS SHIT THE CAMPAIGN IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE BETTER
ninjaturtle11 - 8/9/2012, 6:03 PM
the amazing spiderman was GREAT.
SageMode - 8/9/2012, 6:03 PM
GOILL and CIPHER

Satisfaction. Good enough for ya?
NeoBaggins - 8/9/2012, 6:11 PM
I'll rent this, wait for SkyFall and in the mean time, hit up TDKR again.

The thing about Renner being genetically enhanced sounds dumb and the "events in the film run parallel to events seen in the previous instalments" seems to be a red flag for me.

The cool thing is that the existing trilogy is intact if this falls off.
AmericanPsychoWolf - 8/9/2012, 6:11 PM
If this doesn't then Expendables 2 will
NITRAMtheJudge - 8/9/2012, 6:11 PM
Let's be honest, most likely this new Bourne film will take the number one spot, cause quite frankly many people have seen TDKR too many times than they probably should... Me myself I've seen it twice, and that's enough. Because truthfully even though TDKR is a great film, it's too long for just a casual movie goer. Not saying that's it too long like King Kong, but it's still long, but it's necessary long. I'm not saying the Bourne film is better than Batman or anything, but it looks to be quite entertaining. And it does take a realistic approach. Now since everyone knows about the people who made Jason Bourne, why wouldn't they try to kill off operatives who may or may not talk... And Hawkeye is a good actor... But I do miss Jason Bourne, but hey least he's mentioned in the film...
AmericanPsychoWolf - 8/9/2012, 6:12 PM
Hey its better to be beat by Borne Legacy then Men in Black III.
pud333 - 8/9/2012, 6:14 PM
I guess Hawkeye is now a bonafide star?
Ranger14 - 8/9/2012, 6:14 PM
I am really not that interested in seeing it in the theater, but the lady wants to see it. :-(

Looks like the first film all over except with different people playing the parts. Spy/assassin questions who he is...finds out he is a special project...meets girl...saves girl...falls for girl as they get chased all over the place. Been there, done that and got the t-shirt.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 8/9/2012, 6:20 PM
Meh, not seeing it.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 8/9/2012, 6:21 PM
If it was a fourth film with Damon, then hell yea I'd be there first showing.
FilmsFan - 8/9/2012, 6:27 PM
I think TDKR is doing great!
1 Billion$ worldwide is almost confirmed!
425+ in US!
I means 2nd MOST succesful WB film! Why on earth they'll complain!
1st is TDK... & at # 7 is INCEPTION!!
I think WB will be pretty happy with NOLAN!
He should now make a 200 Million$ R-Rated SCI-Fi like PROMETHEUS but with NOLAN Atleast lots of fans wouldn't be disappointed! (I'm not disappointed with Prometheus but lot of fans are)!! A daring R-Rated intellectual SciFi is now only made by NOLAN!!
DO IT NOLAN! Do it ... Please!!

On LEGACY ... I'm going to see it.. But what's shocking to me is to hear fan reviews about LACK of ACTION!
I thought TRANSFORMERS-3 taught Hollywood a great lesson!
Make a SHIT-Ass film but don't forget to have a 40+ mins Final ACTION set piece... If Bombed in US ... China, Japan, Korea & South America will make sure you'll make A LOT of money!!

& now i hear this BOURNE film is LACKING in what?... Action!
That's worse that making a bad film.
CPBuff22 - 8/9/2012, 6:31 PM
I am more excited about Expendables 2 in DBOX
TicklerMan - 8/9/2012, 6:32 PM
I've seen the TDKR 20 times since the release in IMAX. It sucks and it is just not worth seeing. Oh, got to go, heading to the IMAX to watch TDKR.

Spidey31 - 8/9/2012, 6:39 PM
^^ lol
InFamouslyCool - 8/9/2012, 6:43 PM
TDK & R will still be remembered as the best. LOL The Avengers never will
ninjaturtle11 - 8/9/2012, 6:48 PM
20 times ..... i seen the avengers 50 times
PopcornMode - 8/9/2012, 6:50 PM
Uh oh, someone's starting to flame bait again! Stop it, seriously. I have seen the Bourne Legacy and i did not like it. Renner was badass but the film's narration is incoherent and annoying. Camera work is too jittery in the action scenes, but fight choreography is pretty good. The premise of the story is good, but the editing did not do it justice. The ending was one of those WTF moments. Just my opinion though. You may like it in your own way. Peace!
lunesta - 8/9/2012, 6:51 PM
@Squaremaster more like the tourist
rockerdude22 - 8/9/2012, 6:54 PM
Hey, three weeks at the top is just fine!

Fun fact I'd like to share with everyone here. I am writing my own superhero script. You see, I'm currently in college right now studying to get a degree in Communication (I want to become a writer for film and television). Anyway, every year the Comm. department at my school does a student produced film (I acted in the one we did last year!). In November, a contest is held where students may write and submit a script. The winning script gets produced as that year's film. I decided to write a script and enter it. Guess what? It's a superhero film! Since we're living in the golden age of superhero flicks, I was inspired to write my own. not done with the script yet, but I'm getting there! Wish me luck!
StormLoganSummers - 8/9/2012, 6:59 PM
The juxtaposition of those two photos doesn't do TBL any favours.
lunesta - 8/9/2012, 6:59 PM
@rockerdude22 hey what superhero are you writing i hope its not shitty ass aquaman
TheOneSuperMan - 8/9/2012, 7:00 PM
@Rocker.. Best of luck my friend !
rockerdude22 - 8/9/2012, 7:00 PM
@lunesta It's an original hero I created. He uses random everyday objects to fight crime lol.
PopcornMode - 8/9/2012, 7:10 PM
@rockerdude22 what's your take on costumes? underwear or no underwear? lol! best of luck on your script!
lunesta - 8/9/2012, 7:11 PM
i had an idea for a hero ones i was going to call bethoven but then i looked at it and it was shit
mgeoff88 - 8/9/2012, 7:18 PM
Oh boy... here comes the DC vs. Marvel arguments.

@rockerdude Good luck! That sounds great, man. So he's pretty much MacGyver with tights? :P

There is a certain awesomeness with that concept.
darkmetal - 8/9/2012, 7:20 PM
This film may get 1 good weekend. But its a horrible film. Word of mouth will kill it fast. It will begin to fade Sat + Sun and do less than 40 million.
LAXtremest - 8/9/2012, 7:24 PM
Ill give it a viewing. The Bourne trilogy is probably my favorite trilogy.
Spidey31 - 8/9/2012, 7:24 PM
Why the hell are you trying to start a flame war?
