BOX OFFICE: THE BOURNE LEGACY Takes Aim At A $45 Million Weekend
It looks like early tracking was nearly spot on as The Bourne Legacy now looks set to earn somewhere around $45 million at the North American box office this weekend despite mixed reviews. Hit the jump for further details!
Thanks to big budget flops like Battleship, it hasn't been a particularly good year for Universal at the box office. However, The Hollywood Reporter now reveals that The Bourne Legacy is set to earn a little more in North America this weekend than originally expected. It is now expected to open today with between $15 million and $18 million, putting it on course for a total of around $45 million. With Matt Damon unwilling to return to the role of Jason Bourne without director Paul Greengrass (who is currently occupied with various other projects), the studio are hoping that Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross will help them launch an entirely new franchise. How The Bourne Legacy performs this weekend will play a big role in whether or not that ultimately happens.
The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.
Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross
Rachel Weisz as Stephanie Snyder
Edward Norton as Byer
Joan Allen as Pam Landy
David Strathairn as Noah Vosen
Albert Finney as Dr. Albert Hirsch
Scott Glenn as Ezra Kramer
