SUPERMAN's "Ma Kent" Phyllis Thaxter Passes Away Aged 90

Perhaps best known for her role as Clark Kent's (Christopher Reeve) mother in 1978's Superman, actress Phyllis Thaxter sadly passed away on Tuesday at her home in Florida at the age of 90.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms the sad news that Phyllis Thaxter died on Tuesday at her in Florida after what they describe as, "a long bout with Alzheimer's." The actress will be best known to comic book fans for playing Ma Kent in Richard Donner's Superman over 30 years ago. "She was one of the most beautiful and patrician icons of the golden age of movies, TV and theater," veteran movie critic Rex Reed told the site. Thaxter was also known for roles in the likes of Bewitched, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo and Act of Violence.

I just saw Superman:The Movie four weeks ago.I get kind of teary eyed every time I watch the scene of Young Clark telling Ma Kent he's getting ready to leave the farm.Superman is a classic and R.I.P. Ma Kent.

Richard Donner really made a classic comic book movie when he made Superman:The Movie.That movie has lots of heart and is still beautiful to this day.And what a classic score by John Williams.Zack Snyder and Hans Zimmer has some big shoes to fill.

I always found it funny that Thaxter was Donner's second choice. He originally wanted Joan Crawford for Ma Kent but she passed away from cancer before filming began. Can't you just see those kryptonite coat hangers in action.

The scene where she meets Clark in the cornfield and he tells her he has to leave is one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever. She says "remember us son, always remember us". They have this really emotional embrace as the John Williams music kicks in. It gets to me every time I watch it. Ill always remember her for that scene. May she rest in peace.

I remember her as Lois Lane in the 1st season of the Adventures of Superman. Her Lois was very different from Noel Neill's.

She was fantastic in one of the best CBM of all time. The first half of Superman is still some of the best storytelling in any CBM.

90 is a ripe old age. Hope she had a great life.

Phyllis Thaxtet, excellent actress. Saw her in other films besides Superman. R.I.P. @ClydeBarrow, that was Phyllis Coates not Thaxter in Adventures of Superman.

Oh wow, all the Kents are now gone.. with the exception of Jeff East who played young Clark. Chris Reeve, Glen Ford and now Thaxter. .. We will always fondly remember you. RIP

RIP. I saw a movie from 1944 (Thirty Secondsover Tokyo) and noticed that the female lead looked familiar- it was indeed Phyllis Thaxter. She really had a good career. And she was great in Superman. RIP.
