BOX OFFICE: Analysts Not Predicting A Big Weekend In North America For DREDD

Sadly, it looks like Lionsgate's unimpressive marketing campaign and some stiff competition from a bunch of other releases will mean that DREDD struggles to hit the double digits at the North American box office this weekend. Read on for details!

It's going to be a busy weekend at the North American box office and that unfortunately means that DREDD probably won't perform as well as fans hoping for a sequel would like. It faces stiff competition from End of Watch, House At The End Of The Street, The Master, Trouble With the Curve, and last week's holdovers Resident Evil: Retribution and Finding Nemo 3D. This means that despite opening at 2,506 locations (2,200 of which are 3D) it will likely finish in the high single digits, although good word of mouth could ensure that it reaches $10+ million. The advertising campaign for DREDD has been poor as it essentially ended after the film was released in the UK two weeks ago. With so many other choices on offer, Lionsgate should have been doing everything possible to make sure that the 2000AD adaptation was the #1 choice for moviegoers. Read my review by clicking HERE.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson, a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan's inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound's control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

STARRING:

Karl Urban as Judge Dredd
Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson
Lena Headey as Madeline Madrigal
Domhnall Gleeson as Travis Synders
Langley Kirkwood as Judge Lex
Francis Chouler as Judge Guthrie
Deobia Oparei as Judge T.J. Alvarez

What a surprise?

Amazing film
Ranger14 - 9/20/2012, 6:23 PM
I have to agree with Gambit89. I don't think it has much to do with the marketing campaign or competition. It is a very niche' film for a select group of comic fans and main stream public isn't going to be that interested. At least with the first one you had a name draw in Stallone to appeal to Joe Q. Public.
marvel72 - 9/20/2012, 6:24 PM
i didn't think judge dredd comic's were that popular in america in the first place.so i didn't expect it to do as well there like it did in the rest of europe, especially when you have to compete with spider-man & batman.

superman2013 - 9/20/2012, 6:26 PM

HellsHammer - 9/20/2012, 6:33 PM

ZombieOverEasy - 9/20/2012, 6:35 PM
Didn't they say this about Total Recall and it totally blew away their expectations?

I'm going to see it for [frick]ing sure. Looks hella-awesome. Everyone I talk to at work is planning on going.
Bane2099 - 9/20/2012, 6:37 PM
Imma laugh if these " analysts " are proven wrong...I, for one, am very interested in seeing this movie :]
fettastic - 9/20/2012, 6:45 PM
I've thought this movie looked like crap since the very first pic of Urban in his ginormous helmet and S.W.A.T. outfit.

However, the reviews have been enormously positive so I've3 decided to give it a shot.....on video.

It just looks really cheap and darkly lit, which just isn't going to be appealing to many people.

The commercials have spent all their time focusing on the stupid slo-mo and not on the action. HUGE mistake in my opinion.

Low budget action films have done well throughout cinema history, not be shooting their load all over the screen on the one big special effect they could afford, but by building tone, iconography and showcasing action.

I still think they should have kept the visuals bold and sci fi, like the Brian Boland Dredd. Win or lose, at least it would have looked like the damn books!

Instead it just looks like S.W.A.T. 2 with weird helmets and bullet time. I never thought it would make more than $30M-$40M, but this sounds like it won't even get that.
Fastestmanalive - 9/20/2012, 6:50 PM
I see it advertised everywhere here in NY
fettastic - 9/20/2012, 6:50 PM
@zombieovereasy, no Total Recall really did bomb.
jimpinto24 - 9/20/2012, 6:52 PM
I hope Dredd does well at the box office! *Fingers crossed*
Scabsallover - 9/20/2012, 6:52 PM
After talking to a chair, Eastwood is no longer a threat this weekend, however the OTHER Amy Adams movie coming out this week will turn out in the top 3: THE MASTER.
SH - 9/20/2012, 6:54 PM
"The advertising campaign for DREDD has been poor as it essentially ended after the film was released in the UK two weeks ago."

I've seen ads for this consistently for the past 3-4 weeks, no idea what you're talking about.
Spidey31 - 9/20/2012, 6:56 PM
One does not simply go against Clint Eastwood and win
SuspenseSmith - 9/20/2012, 7:00 PM
Word of mouth is everything for this movie now.
LAXtremest - 9/20/2012, 7:03 PM
There's barely any theaters showIng it by my house and those ones have limited showings. I'm definitely going to see it. Probably tomorrow.
LFANCH - 9/20/2012, 7:03 PM
I think DREDD has had plenty of adds, the trailer was less than impressive in my opinion though. I'm not a huge DREDD fan and there really wasn't anything in the trailer that made me want to become one.

and please let Grif say what he wants, the guy never says anything bad about other users and you know he's not trolling cause he would have stopped many years ago if he was. Grif is a part of what makes this site great.
LAXtremest - 9/20/2012, 7:03 PM
And yes, here in the U.S. I'm seeing ads everywhere for this.
LAXtremest - 9/20/2012, 7:05 PM
Before the weekends over Josh will post 4 articles that go back and forth on how much money this movie will make.
Viltrumite - 9/20/2012, 7:11 PM
I'm taking my dad to see this Saturday night. I've heard great things and I'm expecting to love it. Hopefully, word of mouth spreads and it does well enough for to warrant a sequel.
polarkyle - 9/20/2012, 7:12 PM
how can this be when everywhere i go i see ads for this film
darkknight2149 - 9/20/2012, 7:16 PM
I know I'm planning on seeing it. I just started reading the comics and am actually enjoying them.
OdinsBeard - 9/20/2012, 7:24 PM
CBMers unite! go pay to see this movie!
Fastestmanalive - 9/20/2012, 7:34 PM
LOL @MrEko

or the underworld ads. but those John Carter ads were the freakin worst of them.
DioFoRio - 9/20/2012, 7:42 PM
John Carter ads and those shiitay motion comics that were 14 decibels louder than the ad that preceded it.
xcan28 - 9/20/2012, 7:45 PM
Solid weekend with Dredd and 'The Master' coming out. I love me some PT Anderson, but sadly for my man crush PT, I'll be Dredding it up this weekend and Mastering it next.
ckal - 9/20/2012, 7:46 PM
Dredd only has like 5 [frick]ing showtimes on Saturday at my theater. And it is a big theater.

What the [frick]??? That's why.
gaikinger - 9/20/2012, 7:47 PM
Going to first show in the morning
Lego - 9/20/2012, 7:55 PM
I wonder if Clint is talking to an empty chair in that movie?
DrDoom - 9/20/2012, 9:01 PM
Well, they'll be getting mah moneh.
deanwilkins - 9/20/2012, 9:02 PM
Support it we must.
Maximus101 - 9/20/2012, 9:02 PM
It will make more than that, my guess is 30+ million. Who know nowadays though, the box office is random and unpredictable.
lokibane2012 - 9/20/2012, 9:11 PM
As I have said hundreds of times, now.

This film will be excellent but it won't make much money.
lokibane2012 - 9/20/2012, 9:11 PM
^coz the marketing's [frick]ing shit.
SiriusC - 9/20/2012, 9:32 PM
Nothing against him, but a non-comic-book-fan friend of mine thought that this was a remake of the Stallone movie, of which he didn't even know was based on a comic book. To me, that's indicative of the general pop & what they might perceive this movie to be. I wanna see it, but I'm not gonna go rushing out the door.

Also, the box office has been generally shit. It's like everyone spent their money on Avengers & Batman & blew their wad!
GiantNerd0720 - 9/20/2012, 9:35 PM
Seeing it tomorrow. Chyeah.
TheAbomination - 9/20/2012, 10:01 PM
Seeing the Master this weekend; probably on Saturday. I might catch Dredd sometime next week.
UltimateHunt - 9/20/2012, 10:07 PM
Well it will get tickets from people who knows about movies and not all will see Dredd rather then End of Watch(i saw the trailer in Avengers and TDKR friday premier) by that it has ALOT of people in the back. Dredd also is not popular the trailer looks dumb people say its REALLY good different from trailer. Eastwood lost popularity :( after appearing for (Racist and ALOT other things i cant say here) Mitt Romney, people got really mad. My prediction its End of Watch (30-40) Dredd (15-20)TROUBLE with the curve i dont know, i hope nothing
FOOM - 9/20/2012, 10:21 PM
Dredd is the CBM dark horse of the year regardless of the box office numbers it pulls. Makes TDKR look like the Power Rangers.
mattattack - 9/20/2012, 10:24 PM
I will be giving my 16$ this weekend to Dredd!!
ManOfKrypton - 9/20/2012, 11:19 PM
This film in my opinion is better then The Avengers and TDKR!! I kid you not... It's a real man's movie... I'm talking stuff like Robocop, Die Hard, Escape from New York etc. if you loved 80s action flicks then Dredd is the film to see.

If you go see anything other then dredd this weekend, you're just a bloody p@&sy in my eyes... Forget the master and anything else. This film needs all the support it can get.

As much as I love PT Anderson, I'd never pay to see anything of his on the big screen... Mainly because it would be no different to watching it on my TV. A film like Dredd however is made especially for the cinema!
BenderdickCumPatch - 9/20/2012, 11:32 PM
Can't wait for this.
rea1dea1stee1 - 9/20/2012, 11:48 PM
ive said if before an i'll say it again this movie is the dogs bollax!!! best film this year for me!! there where even four 80+ grannys watchin it! so i think this will make the numbers...
ratthawks - 9/20/2012, 11:54 PM
You luck buggers, we Kiwi's don't get till October like the Aussies......DAMIT!
Kayo - 9/21/2012, 12:45 AM
this is gonna be a thrill ride from start to finish................can't wait
DudeGuyMan - 9/21/2012, 1:16 AM
THE SENTENCE... IS DEATH!
dreddhead123 - 9/21/2012, 1:47 AM
In terms of characterization, Dredd 3D is rather good. It does capture the essence of the Judge Dredd character. However, in terms of its plot it's rather poor. The plot is a variation on Die Hard, there is little Dredd world content, the block looks too modern and slummy, the action content isn't that high and a bit brief.

I don't consider it a great Judge Dredd film. A great Judge Dredd film would require a much larger budget and a more imaginative, inspiring storyline. There's not much to be inspired about in Dredd 3D - not unless you think watching the main hero walking along slummy corridors for much of the plot is the height of 'originality'! Plot-wise it's pretty lame so its predicted low box office isn't a surprise.

It would have helped the film's marketing had Lionsgate not shown a certain character being pushed through a window! That was a major dumb decision. A better title would have helped too. 'Dredd 3D' is the lamest title someone could come up with.

Speaking as a life-long Judge Dredd fan I believe too much is lost when the character is transferred to the big screen. Something is missing and that's...

The Britishness of the character.

Judge Dredd is set in future America but the comic strip has a British sensibility. Without that sensibility - the humour, the wacky quality, the concise, taut, inventive writing style of John Wagner and Alan Grant, you lose the essence of the character and the world. No exaggeration but Dredd 3D is just a simplistic variation on Die Hard but 2000AD's Judge Dredd has so much more to offer. There are so many one part six page Judge Dredd stories that are more imaginative, funnier, more absurd, more intelligently plotted than what you will see in Dredd 3D. That doesn't mean Dredd 3D is an outright failure but it does make it unoriginal and uninspired. When a new Judge Dredd film is made and people are eager to compare it to Die Hard or The Raid you know it's got major storyline problems. It's just too unoriginal and that's a great pity.
Hardshaw - 9/21/2012, 2:10 AM
Heres some word of mouth...Just saw DREDD 3D it was FANTASTIC!!!! It has the film style of early Carpenter with a throwback to 70's/80's action films. It's a fast paced dystopian future R rated violent action flick..Full disclosure i'm a lifelong Dredd fan so don't be a lazy bunch of fellow yanks and READ some great DREDD comics!!
