Hideo Kojima Reveals Which Type Of Actor He Wants To Play 'Snake' In METAL GEAR SOLID

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima once said that he would like to see Hugh "Wolverine" Jackman bring 'Snake' to life on the big screen, but the creator of the critically acclaimed video game franchise now reveals that he and Avi Arad have a different type of actor in mind...

Talking today at the Eurogamer Expo in London, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has revealed the type of actor that he and producer Avi Arad (Spider-Man, X-Men) are hoping to find to play iconic Playstation character, 'Snake'. A lot of big names have been suggested in the past, but it appears as if they are far more interested in finding a lesser known actor for the role (similar to what Marvel Studios did with THOR's Chris Hemsworth). Many thanks to IGN Movies for the quote below. Be sure to click on the link at the bottom of the page to read more of Kojima's comments on the big screen adaptation, and specifically how he feels about not being involved in either a writing or directing capacity. Who do you guys think would be a good choice?

"If I talk to much about this Avi might get mad at me, but after thinking about it more, it’s probably better to go for someone new, a rising star, someone who hasn't been typecast before as a particular kind of character, so that’s the route we’re going right now. Avi is very good at finding these people, and I think we can find someone who can make it big and have Solid Snake be their break into the movie industry."

I think they should just use David Hayter for the role. He hasn't done a lot of acting recently and is obviously good for snake since he already provides the voice
Sparrowsabre7 - 9/27/2012, 8:05 AM
I think this is probably a good direction to take. I'd love to see Hugh or Bale take the role, but a new actor has plenty of potential to blow us away and show us something new.
toco89 - 9/27/2012, 8:08 AM
The right way to go. But Hugh Jackman being considered for the role worries me. Good actor, very close in appearance and fit, but I can't help but be reminded that he's been miscast his entire career for tough and rough characters.

Obviously wolverine, but Van Helsing also, and most notibly for me Australia.

It was interesting to find out that Russell Crowe was first offered wolverine, and he was going to be the lead in Australia and even helped develop the film. But just before production began, he got screwed over by the director and was replaced.
CampBlood - 9/27/2012, 8:14 AM
YES this means no mumble voice bale or wrongverine jackman
nowtheresaBATman - 9/27/2012, 8:17 AM
Powers Boothe back in the day would've been perfect for Snake lol
CampBlood - 9/27/2012, 8:25 AM
joshua jackson should play snake and Jennifer Lawrence should play Meryl
spidey1994 - 9/27/2012, 8:25 AM
I think Christian Bale would make a great Solid Snake and I think David Hayter should write the script because he's a excellent writer.
Scabsallover - 9/27/2012, 8:33 AM
I'm concerned about if they'll follow the ACTUAL timeline. I think up until 4&Peace Walker, the tech was very close to the times. A bit of a stretch, but with DARPA actually releasing bi-pedal robots now, you could argue that they've had this tech secretly for a decade and has been included in Black Ops.

My point is: you can't [frick] with SNAKE EATER. It's gotta be all there, or none at all (its already a brilliant movie when watched in the viewer mode).

Scabsallover - 9/27/2012, 8:34 AM
And BIG BOSS needs to be a popular actor I think. Everyone else can be new names, but star power would help for the series' backbone
InfiniteMonkey - 9/27/2012, 8:35 AM
Guy Pearce. Perfect bloke for it.

He hasn't been in anything big of late. He could totally mold this and own it.
Scabsallover - 9/27/2012, 8:37 AM
Sorry again, but I think everyone is so passionate about this series that we pray its done right. If I tear up, I'll find you Kojima, and I'll never stop saluting you.

Vic Boss!!!
13echo - 9/27/2012, 8:43 AM
A young Kurt Russel since he based Snake off of Kurt in Escape from New York!
sciencefriction - 9/27/2012, 8:43 AM
Whoever they find, I think he needs to be able to play Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, and (through CGI) Big Boss. Let's be honest, how bad ass would it be if they all actually looked like they were the same person, like they should?
nowtheresaBATman - 9/27/2012, 8:47 AM
@infinateMonkey Really? He stole the show in Lawless. & after seeing Lockout I'd agree he'd make a great Snake.
ManOfKrypton - 9/27/2012, 8:47 AM
Get Josh Holloway (Sawyer from Lost). He hasn't done anything big, but definitely has the Kurt Russell factor about him!
whoa123 - 9/27/2012, 8:56 AM
Liam McIntyre for Young Snake and Powers Boothe for Old Snake!
weaponx123 - 9/27/2012, 8:57 AM
Eric Bana would be an awesome Solid Snake!
Nubase - 9/27/2012, 8:59 AM
from what l know assasins greed is about to be made with fassbander as the lead, l just hope they stay true to the game and mythos as its one of my fav games,

As for Metal Gear Solid, those games is what made me buy a playstation 2 and 3 in the first place so l hope the movie delivers but with hideo invovled l'm confident it will.

The male lead for snake, l can understand the jackman talk cos he looks like jackman but l agree with ManOfKrypton who suggested Josh Holloway from lost, he has the attitude of snake from the games.
RunawaysHD - 9/27/2012, 9:02 AM
Sean Bean. End of discussion
AlexDeLarge87 - 9/27/2012, 9:13 AM
Rising star or Unknown would be perfect way to go.
thewonderer - 9/27/2012, 9:21 AM
Sean Bean really deserves to be a main character in a franchise, give it to him
sinchsw - 9/27/2012, 9:23 AM
This is good, and Hollywood producers should take more chances on people like this. Did you know that you can't be in the Screen Actor's Guild until you've starred in a big budget movie, and the union makes the movie production company pay an extra fee for hiring NON-union actors who are not in the Guild? Yeah. It is a disgusting loop, only broken by good guys like this.
IMNAvenger - 9/27/2012, 9:31 AM
Why don't they just use David Hayter as Snake since he does the voice? It makes perfect sense to me
CREAD - 9/27/2012, 9:39 AM
@earzmundo-- Don't know this Oliver Cohen, but he definatly looks the part. Also, coming from an American perspectative, it's sad but true. The better movies lately have all stared non-Northern Americans. Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Gary Oldman. . .etc.
CampBlood - 9/27/2012, 9:42 AM
for those of you wanting bale to play snake please reconsider and imagine snake talking in that marble mouth voice
CharlesTheIncredible - 9/27/2012, 9:50 AM
Im a big fan of the series and I really dont think this needs to be made into a movie. I dont think it will do it justice honestly. The storyline is already complex and convoluted with hours of cutscenes, idk that a 90-120 min film is gonna help. If it does get made I prefer it to be CG cuz then the entire voice cast can be brought in cuz i had a weird thing about someone trying to sound like snake, and just doin a Bale Growl.
sahin86 - 9/27/2012, 9:54 AM
jackman is a nice choice.
christian bale would also be nice!
LoganSmith - 9/27/2012, 9:55 AM
Bradley Copper I think would make an awesome Snake
supermarioworldE - 9/27/2012, 10:03 AM
I don't know how they can make a metal gear solid movie without adapting the first two metal gear games. It was hard enough to understand what was happening in the game without playing the first two.
katshadow - 9/27/2012, 10:21 AM
funny!!! I just did this piece on Hugh Jackman as Snake

Bumble - 9/27/2012, 10:33 AM
Still so glad they finally got moving on a movie for this. One of the best game franchises ever! Now, onto the matter at hand...

Who you cast as Snake is going to depend on what story you're adapting. That dictates what age the actor needs to be.

Personally, I hope not someone who's too young. Someone early 30's with solid acting skills whose been under the radar. Not some muscle bound, monotone statue either. Snake's special ops; he needs to be lean and mean.

I used say a guy like David Boreanaz because of his skills as an actor and he's got the right build. Now, I tend to shy away from that.

If they didn't mention the "type-cast" comment, I'd throw in Karl Urban. He's perfect. Maybe even James MacEvoy (look at a picture of him with a beard, wouldn't take much to have him looking like ol' Snake).
Squish - 9/27/2012, 10:38 AM
Ahh Wonderbread
MatchesMalone1989 - 9/27/2012, 11:26 AM
Photobucket

This is what it should have been.....
AlexDeLarge87 - 9/27/2012, 12:02 PM
MatchesMalone@ Thats pretty cool.

Karl Urban would be awesome Snake if they wanna do justice for the original look.

mr2324jgf - 9/27/2012, 12:28 PM
Taylor Kitsch ...
Roland - 9/27/2012, 12:29 PM
JOSH HOLLOWAY FOR SNAKE
fanboy03191 - 9/27/2012, 12:40 PM
Wait, they're still making this?! Hope it doesn't fail.
TheRationalOne - 9/27/2012, 12:42 PM
If they are doing Metal Gear SOLID, they need an older actor. He was already retired basically in that game. You cant do it with some new guy. If they did just Metal Gear they could, but I'd rather see Solid.
LeoAtrox - 9/27/2012, 12:44 PM
This has David Hasselhoff written all over it ... And I mean that it a totally "Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." sort of way.
AlexDeLarge87 - 9/27/2012, 12:57 PM
Karl Urban or Hugh Jackman. If they go with known actor.
AlexDeLarge87 - 9/27/2012, 12:58 PM
CaptainCool@ I dont really dig Fillion but i guess it could work.
TankD - 9/27/2012, 1:02 PM
@mr2324jgf hahahaha gtfo. Karl urban is probably THE best choice but he has Dredd and star trek I bet if they asked him he would do it. but with the poor dredd box office performance i doubt its even a possibility. Bale would be the best and his Name would draw new comers to the franchise. But I guess the unknown thing if it does happen? Im not to sure who I would like to see in the role. should be interesting either way.
TankD - 9/27/2012, 1:04 PM
oh yea! fillion sucks I mean he was good in 1 thing!! he is getting chubby and his voice is so lame!! give up on that dude forreal.
locuaz - 9/27/2012, 1:11 PM
Hugh is a good actor but he will be bussy with The Wolverine 2, 3, etc, X-Men First Generation 2, 3, etc, the reboot of The Wolverine, etc.
I think that Oliver Cohen, Jake Gyllenhall or Christian Bale would be the perfect options for the role.
lokibane2012 - 9/27/2012, 1:31 PM
Avi Arad...

Oh no
ThaReaperAssassin - 9/27/2012, 2:50 PM
Joel Edgerton for snake FTW!!!!
DevilHulk666 - 9/27/2012, 3:27 PM
I chose Urban ages ago for the role ,perfect
snook101 - 9/27/2012, 6:53 PM
I think that guy Sawyer from Lost...Josh Holloway would be good at it. And he hasn't really been in a real movie but I'm sure he would do great...
mgeoff88 - 9/27/2012, 8:46 PM
I think going with an unknown is the best way to go. I grew up on this series, so I really hope this a way above average video game adaption.

Man, I remember the first time I bought MGS at EB Games(formerly Electronics Boutique). I bought it while I was out town, and I was so excited to go home and play it. Good memories.
toco89 - 9/28/2012, 8:18 AM
@norsegod

Cuz they have the same build. That's where it stops.
