James Gunn Talks GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Casting; Wants To Adapt THUNDERBOLTS

Writer and director James Gunn talks briefly about what other comic books he'd like to adapt for the big screen, comments on whether he has freedom to cast whomever he likes in Guardians of the Galaxy, and reveals that he has a "long, long list" of choices for Rocket Raccoon.

Talking at the "Celluloid Heroes" panel at this weekend's MorrisonCon in Las Vegas, Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn was quizzed about exactly how much freedom he has with casting the Marvel Studios movie. "It's not cast-dependent. We could make the movie with unknowns if we wanted to," he revealed. "I can't talk too much about this, because Marvel will kill me!" Of course, there's one character in particular that fans care more about that the rest. Rocket Raccoon. "There's such a long, long list for all our casting choices, we've barely begun."

Finally, he revealed which other properties he would like to adapt. "There's only four comics properties that ever interested me in turning them into movies," Gunn declared. "One was 'We3.' The others were 'Thunderbolts,' 'Hit Monkey'...and 'Guardians Of The Galaxy.'" Marvel Studios don't own an awful lot of their characters, but a Thunderbolts movie (with the right roster) is a definite possibility! Which of these properties would you be most interested in seeing become a reality on the big screen from Gunn? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about.

Let's see some professional voice actors in major feature roles.

And thus...FRED TATASCIORE AS THANOS LADIES AND GENTS!
DrDoom - 10/1/2012, 11:26 AM
Meh. Leave Thunderbolts off the table. Just get casting done for Guardians.
rockerdude22 - 10/1/2012, 11:37 AM

KaneVonDoom - 10/1/2012, 11:40 AM
It would be cool to see Thunderbolts after they do the Masters of Evil thing and in a setup toward a Civil War flick.

Ready for this movie. Ready to see who they cast.

SN: Next year, is when I officially read all the great Marvel cosmic titles.

Regarding who you cast, I think it's going to be interesting with who they bring on. I think they need three big name people in order to sell the movie to the general public (*Salutes* "General Public").

But there have only been three movies ever to gross an opening weekend over 60 million in August and those three barely did $200 million domestically. So you have to be careful about getting big people because let's be honest, the movie is not going to bring in that much money compared to the other Marvel franchises.

I'm sure anyone who has actually read GOTG or want to see a movie with StarLord involved care about "that cartoon Racoon".
marvel72 - 10/1/2012, 11:55 AM

jimpinto24 - 10/1/2012, 12:05 PM
Thunderbolts. If they go with the current team from the Thunderbolts comics for Marvel NOW! Red Hulk, Deadpool, Venom, Electra, & The Punisher. And I hope Marvel cast Nathan Fillion as Star-Lord.
sexfoodcomics - 10/1/2012, 12:05 PM
Nathan Fillion or Bradly cooper as Star Lord.
DrDoom - 10/1/2012, 12:06 PM
GROOT
sciencefriction - 10/1/2012, 12:11 PM
Hit Monkey huh? They'd need to get Deadpool back first, b/c a Deadpool cameo would be necessary. Still, Thunderbolts would be awesome. They could introduce Zemo in Cap 2 then lead Thunderbolts.
Jollem - 10/1/2012, 12:12 PM
i'm still trying to figure out who these guys are. are they from milestone or image comics?
Batcowliveson - 10/1/2012, 12:12 PM

marvel72 - 10/1/2012, 12:15 PM

but i very much doubt i'll get to see that line up,what with osborn & venom being at sony.
AlSimmons - 10/1/2012, 12:17 PM
Thunderbolts, eh? I like the idea for a movie, but I don't think there are enough redeemable villains at the moment. Abomination, maybe. But dudes like Loki? hahahaha nooooo.
superotherside - 10/1/2012, 12:17 PM
Cool, I really can't wait to see his take on these characters. Also can't wait to see all the haters have to shut up because the movie will be mind blowing.
sicknimon - 10/1/2012, 12:18 PM
ADAM WARLOCK IS ALL I CARE ABOUT!!!! At least until marvel72 brought up who would play Gamora! Also DWAYNE JOHNSON BETTER NOT BE DRAX!!!! I was pissed when I found out he could be playing Lobo
sicknimon - 10/1/2012, 12:22 PM
to hell with Nathion Fillian, I would rather see Bill Pullman play Starlord (but not really). A good Starlord... hmmm how about Johnny Depp.. Kidding... but serious how about Karl Urban!
dnno1 - 10/1/2012, 12:23 PM
Thunderbolts would actually be a good movie. I guest you could say that it would be Mavel's version of "RED".
TheDpool - 10/1/2012, 12:24 PM
Yes Thunderbolts but how would they go with it like the Original team or the Norman Osbourne group?
DioFoRio - 10/1/2012, 12:35 PM
I just hope they don't hire a dog to play raccoons part. That would be a cop out. Raccoon's gotta eat.
ajones325 - 10/1/2012, 12:36 PM
Seth MacFarlane as voice of Rocket Racoon....jk
sicknimon - 10/1/2012, 12:40 PM

@marvel72 oh yeah...
TheAbomination - 10/1/2012, 12:59 PM
The key to this film will be finding the right people to play Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon. They're really the prime characters of the '08 Guardians. Get the right people to play them and half your casting worries are gone.
