Jimmy Smits Talks STAR WARS: EPISODE VII: "If They Want To Call, Let Them Call"

'Senator Bail Organa' died in A New Hope when Darth Vader destroyed the planet Alderaan, making his return extremely unlikely. Dexter star Jimmy Smits reveals here whether he would be interesting in reprising the role and shares his thoughts on the prospect of Episode VII.

If Star Wars: Episode VII was going to fill in the gaps between the prequels and original trilogy, a return for Jimmy Smits as 'Senator Bail Organa' would seem likely. However, reports (and the "VII" in the title itself) indicate that Disney's planned trilogy will take place long after the character dies on the planet Alderaan during the events of A New Hope. Regardless, this doesn't really seem like a role that the Sons of Anarchy star is particularly desperate to return to! "My character was gone after episode whatever. If they want to call, let them call." Fair enough then. As for how he feels about Disney's acquisiion of the franchise, he added: "Congratulations to George, because that was like a mega deal. It’s great that it will kind of live on in a different kind of incarnation." Smits continued, "There’s more stories to tell, of course, I think. You look at the 007 franchise and it’s going on for [50] years. I mean, there are a lot of people that grew up watching that, so I know that he didn’t pass that on without a lot of caveats. I think there will be involvement with George down the line." Would you be interested in seeing him return?

I would rather Billie Dee Williams come back!
RorMachine - 11/8/2012, 1:58 PM
Completely redundant, pointless character, stuffed in only so Leia had somewhere to be shipped off to at the end. I don't even remember a single scene with him tbh.
HellsHammer - 11/8/2012, 1:59 PM
Don't give a damn about his character!
KingEmperor - 11/8/2012, 1:59 PM
@DarthTesla

Nice. And if Mrs. Organa can't have any babies, maybe he'll have one with Leela.

"My character was gone after episode whatever. If they want to call, let them call."

Wow, he seemed really committed to the role. Whatever...

Smits is awesome on this season of soa
FoxForce5 - 11/8/2012, 2:12 PM
Let me just point out that Senator Organa's death is just a presumption. There is no evidence weather he was on Alderaan or not when it exploded. Remember, most of the day Glactic Senators spend most of their time off of their homeworlds.

That being said, it really doesn't matter if we see him or not, he'd be pretty damn old and his roll, after raising Liea, was less than crucial.
FoxForce5 - 11/8/2012, 2:14 PM
@ jessepostal: agreed. He is pretty awesome on SoA.

@foxforce5 Thank you for that, I was just coming on to say the same thing. We presume he died but it is very possible he didn't.

When you think Star Wars you think Jimmy Smits. Can't make a Star Wars movie without Jimmy Smits.

Do we really need pointless Star Wars things like this every ten seconds?

Let's talk about some god@mn superheroes.
LancerEvo - 11/8/2012, 2:59 PM
Nope, he's space-dust. Move on.
HonestFan - 11/8/2012, 3:01 PM
WOW!
Do we really have to go through the next three or more years hearing about every single 'bit' actor that either cares or doesn't care about being in these films?

First of all, some of these actors (MARK HAMMIL included) are horrible actors! Of course, they'll jump at taking a part in what promises to be the biggest money making movie of all time! Carrie Fischer has NOTHING else to do but eat and walk her dog and make appearances at 2nd-rate comic shows. She'd be an idiot not to hire a personal trainer, lose 85 lbs, and take some acting lessons in the next few years. Jimmy Smits is a TV guy who will do whatever a 'paycheck' tells him to do. All of these actors are nothing but overjoyed to have Star Wars coming back... even Harrison Ford, who said he'd NEVER play Han Solo again, but now that his career is taking a nose-dive (see Cowboys & Aliens for an example) he'll be more than happy to don the vest and laser gun once again!

why?....
Boogie138 - 11/8/2012, 4:55 PM
honestly, if some flashback happens to exist that needs characters from smitts tenure then get him for contintuity's sake. but other than that long shot no need.

i do dig the smits tho
marvelstudios - 11/8/2012, 5:15 PM
His awesome in Sons of Anarchy.
nld3 - 11/8/2012, 5:28 PM
I guess he doesn't know he's dead.
beane2099 - 11/8/2012, 6:31 PM
Are we are next going to hear that the Cantina band guys, the guy who played that alien that looked like the Devil, and the dude who remote controlled the little wheelie droids in A New Hope would also come back if the call came? Let's just put a bow on this now. 99% of everyone who was in a Star Wars movie would come back if they were asked (Everyone except probably Jake Lloyd).

Oh, and what possible reason would there be for Jimmy Smit's character to come back? "We just felt there was more story to be told there..." I doubt that.

Wanna see a great fan made Star Wars + Dazed and Confused video??

I literally laughed out loud when Smits appeared onscreen in the prequels. [frick] that guy. Put him on ice until some studio-[foo foo] tries to revive L.A. Law.
Dunejedi - 11/9/2012, 1:39 AM
^ foo foo is how we're flipping c.u.n.t. ? alright then.
chewie - 11/9/2012, 4:54 AM
Pointless article.
Boogie138 - 11/9/2012, 9:52 AM
@chewie: pointless comment
EtriganTheDemon - 11/9/2012, 10:17 AM
@HonestFan

Mark Hamill may be a sub-par actor, but he's better than Hayden Christiansen (and he's the God-Damned Joker). Harrison Ford as Han Solo again would be quite a treat, and Carrie Fisher returning as Leia? Regardless of their acting capabilities, because I don't think that has EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER been a factor in ANY Star Wars flick, it's a fanboys' dream come true, so I don't see why your panties are in a bunch.
