Scott Snyder Shares His Thoughts On The MAN OF STEEL Trailer And This Year's CBM's

I'm really excited about the Man of Steel comics!

So freaking pumped for man of steel, the movie and the comic. Snyder is an awesome dude, I have loved everything he's done so far, batman, detective, gates of gotham, american vampire and swamp thing have all been fantastic. Really interested to see how he handles superman.

Well I'm really excited to see this "realistic" take on Superman.....and I can't believe I just said that.

I just want to see Superman fight something big and threatening and super strong with todays tech.

What the hell is "realistic" when it comes to CBM's? Someone give me an intelligent explanation.

This isn't going to be Superman Returns guys, he's fighting Zod, Faora, the military, and some other alien creatures from the Phantom Zone.

Let's not go over the edge here. The villain in MOS is Zod after all. He's a super-powered space alien.

And the bad guy in JLA is heavily rumoured (if not confirmed?) to be Darkseid.

So it's not like he's going to be catching purse snatchers or something.

That's a shame. I personally think Superman should be more sci-fi, like Morrison's All Star run.

This gives me a lot of hope for Man of Steel comic book series. I'm so tired of ridiculous storylines like multiple-dimensions impacting each other, and time travel, and yadda yadda yadda.

Yes i recognize the inherent ridiculousness of almost all comic book heroes especially Supes, but at the same time I want to really imagine how a being like that would fit into our actual real world.

The types of comic book stories I want to read are not just "villain-of-the-week" stories but how Clark deals with his power, how the world views Superman. If Superman actually existed this would have huge rippling effects on diplomacy, military excursions, politics, and probably even the economy.

What does Superman do when confronted with a massacre happening on one end of the world and another happening at the same time? How does he deal with this moral dilemma? How does he hope to have a relationship when he feels a responsibility to human kind. How does the world react when Superman isn't able to stop something horrible from happening? How does he deal with huge failure on such a public stage?

How does the military treat him? If he refuses to be an arm of the US military, is he viewed as a threat? Are there warrants for his arrest? What sort of public relations issues would exist for politicians who embrace or reject Superman? Would there be a backlash by the public on the fact that Superman's primary interventions are on relatively minor crimes happening in a 1st world city like Metropolis and not on violence in places like Syria?

How would he approach civil wars in other countries? Does he sit idly by and watch the carnage? Does he simply try to assist the innocent civilians? How does he determine who's a civilian and who isn't? What does he do with refugees?

There are so many incredibly interesting angles and questions with which to approach Superman that I don't think have been adequately explored in any medium, especially the comics.

I essentially want an "adult" take on the character and I think that would lend itself more to a huge graphic novel (that's not just a collection of previous comics) possibly and not a monthly series. But given the constraints of a monthly title I think they could still explore some of these issues. And I hope they do.

Eventually I think it would be fine to introduce villains like Darkseid but only way down the road after dealing with truly worldly questions of Superman.

The military and luthor tortured him for info about extraterrestrials because he refused to be their nuclear deterrent.

I just hope this is what I hope they are selling.... I love superman and I'm sure this movie will be great.

I have and do reason the new 52 and own both Earth One books by JMS and yes some of the issues I mentioned are touched on but they are touched on fleetingly, not in much depth, and with the backdrop of some ridiculous villain and/or dialogue imho.

I love the New 52, it's an improvement in trying to ground superheroes more in reality, at the same time, it's not exactly what I'm looking for. I'm hoping the Man of Steel comic will finally give me what I'm looking for.

@MutantEquality: "-istic" pertains to something that is akin to or characteristic of whatever the istic part refers to. Therefore "realistic" means something that is akin to or characteristic of something real, but - and this is key - not necessarily real itself.

In other words, a dream can be 'realistic', a drawing can be, or, in fact, pretty much anything that isn't actually real (real things aren't realistic - that's redundant - they're real, not characteristic of something real). Although a film, by its very nature, is not real, so the lines blur a little depending on the level of artifice involved.

In relation to fantastical things, like superheroes or superpowers, it means that they behave in realistic ways (they have a realistic effect on their environment, they obey the laws of physics, or have 'realistic' sciency explanations for why they don't - see Star Trek, which is full of 'realistic' explanations for things that don't actually exist, along with a few things that aren't realistic at all, like most aliens looking like humans with bumps on their heads).

For example, to make Ant-Man realistic all you need to do is (i) explain how he shrinks in sciency physical terms, preferably not complete nonsense (ii) ensure you account for things like preservations of mass and energy.

In filmic terms they often also mean in terms of how the character and world around them react to each other - Superman being a political being just by existing, governments being concerned about him, people being afraid of these walking gods, etc. All these are how the world would 'realistically' react, rather than just accepting everything without a murmur, without having any appreciable effect on the world as we know it in any significant way, as is often depicted in 'unrealistic' stories.

You can have both in the same film too, btw - you can have some parts treated very realistically and then have other parts completely throw those rules out the window (e.g Terry Gilliam has made a career over the clash between reality and fantasy, with some of his films being very gritty and ultra-realistic in parts and being completely out-there bonkers in others). That balancing and mixing of tone is probably quite difficult to do successfully though I imagine.

In Superman's case, to make his flying 'realistic' you need to factor in wind-resistance, inertia, increased kinetic mass at high velocity, the effect of gravity (and perhaps some explanation of how he defies it), and so on, rather than simply ignoring these types of things.

It is not a contradiction to treat something inherently unrealistic (like flying men, super-powers, dragons, or magic, etc.) realistically. It just means treating them as if they WERE real.
