In a recent interview with IGN Comics, Scott Snyder (who will next year team up with artist Jim Lee (Justice League) on a new Superman comic book series entitled Man of Steel) has shared his thoughts on the Man of Steel trailer which blew us all away when it was released last week. As you can see from his comments below, he enjoyed The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises just as much as the rest of us, but his take on Superman will be far more similar to both the latter movie AND Zack Snyder's upcoming grounded take on the iconic DC character. Be sure to click on the link at the bottom of the page to read the interview in full and sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

"I’m really excited for it. It’s hard because it’s just what I was hoping in that it doesn’t reveal too much at all, so I watch it and it just makes me eager to see it. I definitely was excited when you saw him about to fly and you saw his fist down and the ice started to shake and you got the sense that he really existed in the real world. You know what I mean? You can see something happening and it almost looks like a real-time molecular reaction there. It’s so interesting; it’s really what it’d look like and I never thought about that. I love Superman in the real world in a big way."

"As much as I adore movies and stories that take place clearly in a world that’s more comic booky-y – I loved The Avengers (don’t kill me, DC) and Spider-Man – but at the same time I really loved the Dark Knight movies because they are so grounded in a realistic world. That definitely works for Batman, but I also think that’s a really interesting way to approach Superman and I will say that our Superman is deeply rooted in that idea. It’s not going to be the book where you see Superman fighting a lot of supervillains and a lot of crazy colorful space aliens and stuff like that."

Man, I really wanted to see Supes fighting giant alien robot spiders.
Spideyguy94 - 12/18/2012, 10:07 AM
So freaking pumped for man of steel, the movie and the comic. Snyder is an awesome dude, I have loved everything he's done so far, batman, detective, gates of gotham, american vampire and swamp thing have all been fantastic. Really interested to see how he handles superman.
Bandido - 12/18/2012, 10:09 AM

fanboy03191 - 12/18/2012, 10:19 AM
6of13, he'll be fighting Zod. I wouldn't worry. Its going to be awesome.

O am quite sure MOS will be the CBM event of 2013
fettastic - 12/18/2012, 10:32 AM
Well I'm really excited to see this "realistic" take on Superman.....and I can't believe I just said that.
GUNSMITH - 12/18/2012, 10:58 AM
THEY HAD TO GO THERE CAUSE' NOSTALGIC..

..WAS NOT WORKING..
MutantEquality - 12/18/2012, 10:59 AM
I just want to see Superman fight something big and threatening and super strong with todays tech.

GUNSMITH - 12/18/2012, 11:00 AM
WHERES GRIF?..

MutantEquality - 12/18/2012, 11:00 AM
What the hell is "realistic" when it comes to CBM's? Someone give me an intelligent explanation.
MutantEquality - 12/18/2012, 11:02 AM
There is like 3 or 4 people with Grif's avatar. I even saw one the other day with the name Grif.

WILL THE REAL GRIF PLEASE STAND UP?
mr2324jgf - 12/18/2012, 11:08 AM
those people that use grif's avatar are pathetic...
Vadakin - 12/18/2012, 11:11 AM
Grif is sitting alone in the dark in his big house, brooding and waiting for the day CBM needs him again, the day the Grif-signal will shine through his window, the day Grifman Returns...to fight Danny DeVito...wait, what?
mr2324jgf - 12/18/2012, 11:14 AM
@vadakin, in my imagination, a big fuzzy, disgruntled looking teddy bear was sitting in a dark room with the window behind him when suddenly a big bear symbol is shining in the clouds... cue danny elfman music...
IgnurRant - 12/18/2012, 11:14 AM
If you want supervillains and crazy space villains, read the comics. That's what there made for. Fanboys. smh.
soberchimera - 12/18/2012, 11:29 AM
This isn't going to be Superman Returns guys, he's fighting Zod, Faora, the military, and some other alien creatures from the Phantom Zone.
PeeJ - 12/18/2012, 11:32 AM
Superman vs Zod huh? So it goes one of 2 ways, either its Smith vs Neo again, or its giant selephane 'S's and powers we never see or hear of again. Colour me unexcited.

For the love of all that is Comic Books, will someone please do a live action Doomsday.
DoubleDion - 12/18/2012, 11:33 AM
Im happy to say that I was around to see grif finally get canned like tuna... So long Grif, we barely miss thee... stupid idiot...
Fogs - 12/18/2012, 11:35 AM
I'm excited for this movie but the phrase "It’s not going to be the book where you see Superman fighting a lot of supervillains and a lot of crazy colorful space aliens and stuff like that"... It doesn't make me happy at all.
fettastic - 12/18/2012, 11:40 AM
Let's not go over the edge here. The villain in MOS is Zod after all. He's a super-powered space alien.

And the bad guy in JLA is heavily rumoured (if not confirmed?) to be Darkseid.

So it's not like he's going to be catching purse snatchers or something.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 12/18/2012, 12:13 PM
Good guy. He should write the next Batman movie lol.
jimoakley666 - 12/18/2012, 12:26 PM
That's a shame. I personally think Superman should be more sci-fi, like Morrison's All Star run.
avengersleagueofjusticeforamerica - 12/18/2012, 12:30 PM
Forget realism..... Jeese before special tx caught up they were realistic kinda as in no amazing feats or abilities. If you want realism get away fromthe comic genre and watch Dr. Phil. this is COMICBOOKmovie.com. iwant over the top action, mind blowing fight scenes and cheesy lines that no one would question due to the fact your such a badass. I love movies but above all else I love comic books and the ESCAPE from reality. I'm not a nolanite, marvelmaniac but yes I am a fanboy and if you're not then you have no business on this site. so ignuRant, choke on a bag of Johnson's. as for superman I'm tired of luthor and zod. gimme doomsday, parasite, metallo, braniac, gross, grundy, blockbuster, vandal savage, someone new who poses an extreme physical threat. I'm also concerned that we didn't see heat vision or x-ray vision.
avengersleagueofjusticeforamerica - 12/18/2012, 12:31 PM
O yea bizarro too
ATrueHero1987 - 12/18/2012, 12:32 PM
@IgnurRant Wow...you truly are "ignorant".smdh That's a shame

I enjoyed all 3 CBMS this summer. TASM was my least favorite out the 3 but it was still good.

Next year though....we got IM3, MOS(which I'm getting kinda excited about),and Thor:TDW. I'm still on the fence on The Wolverine....until I see a trailer.
113 - 12/18/2012, 12:32 PM
This gives me a lot of hope for Man of Steel comic book series. I'm so tired of ridiculous storylines like multiple-dimensions impacting each other, and time travel, and yadda yadda yadda.

Yes i recognize the inherent ridiculousness of almost all comic book heroes especially Supes, but at the same time I want to really imagine how a being like that would fit into our actual real world.

The types of comic book stories I want to read are not just "villain-of-the-week" stories but how Clark deals with his power, how the world views Superman. If Superman actually existed this would have huge rippling effects on diplomacy, military excursions, politics, and probably even the economy.

What does Superman do when confronted with a massacre happening on one end of the world and another happening at the same time? How does he deal with this moral dilemma? How does he hope to have a relationship when he feels a responsibility to human kind. How does the world react when Superman isn't able to stop something horrible from happening? How does he deal with huge failure on such a public stage?

How does the military treat him? If he refuses to be an arm of the US military, is he viewed as a threat? Are there warrants for his arrest? What sort of public relations issues would exist for politicians who embrace or reject Superman? Would there be a backlash by the public on the fact that Superman's primary interventions are on relatively minor crimes happening in a 1st world city like Metropolis and not on violence in places like Syria?

How would he approach civil wars in other countries? Does he sit idly by and watch the carnage? Does he simply try to assist the innocent civilians? How does he determine who's a civilian and who isn't? What does he do with refugees?

There are so many incredibly interesting angles and questions with which to approach Superman that I don't think have been adequately explored in any medium, especially the comics.

I essentially want an "adult" take on the character and I think that would lend itself more to a huge graphic novel (that's not just a collection of previous comics) possibly and not a monthly series. But given the constraints of a monthly title I think they could still explore some of these issues. And I hope they do.

Eventually I think it would be fine to introduce villains like Darkseid but only way down the road after dealing with truly worldly questions of Superman.

Those issues are addressed in comics.
Read the new 52 superman or superman earth one.
avengersleagueofjusticeforamerica - 12/18/2012, 12:39 PM
The military and luthor tortured him for info about extraterrestrials because he refused to be their nuclear deterrent.
avengersleagueofjusticeforamerica - 12/18/2012, 12:42 PM
At knight of steel

I know, there's a panel in final crisis after Batman toasted with omega beams that superman plows into the city and slowly walks up to darkseid eyes glowing huge looking all pissed and jacked. truly an iconic comicbook moment for me.
avengersleagueofjusticeforamerica - 12/18/2012, 12:47 PM
I just hope this is what I hope they are selling.... I love superman and I'm sure this movie will be great.
JDUKE25 - 12/18/2012, 12:58 PM
Good, because most of the Superman stories so far have been subpar. I like that it won't be him fighting space aliens and monsters all the time. That gets very old and generic. Oh look, Superman's fighting another monster from space, AGAIN. Gets old. Looking forward to Snyder and Lee's approach.
JDUKE25 - 12/18/2012, 12:59 PM
@Kamen love those pics bro

A worlds Finest movie with a great director could easily surpass Avengers numbers.
113 - 12/18/2012, 2:05 PM
@avengersleagueofjusticeamerica

I have and do reason the new 52 and own both Earth One books by JMS and yes some of the issues I mentioned are touched on but they are touched on fleetingly, not in much depth, and with the backdrop of some ridiculous villain and/or dialogue imho.

I love the New 52, it's an improvement in trying to ground superheroes more in reality, at the same time, it's not exactly what I'm looking for. I'm hoping the Man of Steel comic will finally give me what I'm looking for.
Jollem - 12/18/2012, 2:13 PM
scott's awesome! i wonder if jim lee still digs on strawberry kit-kats :)

i think sometimes people get a little too worked up about this "realism" thing

while the nolan bat-films are more "naturalistic", i don't think anyone involved with the films has ever said they are supposed to be 100% realistic. c'mon, people: blue flower that makes "fear gas", the bat, bane's cool-lookin' mask?

after all, the comics themselves are supposed to take place in our real world(or a similar one)and have fantastic elements involved with them. every cbm is comic-booky

to each their own my friend.im just happy as fans, no matter how different we are we have a place to go and discuss things.
113 - 12/18/2012, 2:32 PM
@Jollem I'm one of those people who like the "realism" or a "naturalistic" approach more than a "comic-booky" approach.

And i say this knowing full well how unrealistic and inane the very idea of superheroes are. I'm not naive in this respect.

The realism I'm talking about is more of a restraint on the more silly secondary elements of a comic book or comic book movie.

For instance, a movie about a Superman is inherently ridiculous. That's a given. But as fiction-consumers we can live with the primary element of the story (the protagonist) being "out-there." What I find kind of annoying is when secondary elements like the setting, secondary characters, plotlines being "out-there" as well because it diminishes the importance of the primary character imho.

Many times comic can feel like the classic example of a writer throwing all these crazy ideas at the wall and seeing which ones stick, instead of just concentrating on one fantastical element and seeing how that fantastical element would work in real life. To me that's more interesting.

An extreme example of the "wrong" approach in my eyes would be like entirely abandoning the laws of physics in comics. They already mess with the laws of physics with Superman flying and all, but imagine if they just completely did away with gravity, so everything floats? Or what if they made gravity so strong that everyone was 2 inches tall? Or what if water was depicted as green and the sky was purple? We all want some level of "realism."

My point is that we do except some element of ridiculousness to any fictional universe, but this can go to far. So we just have to find a point on the spectrum between completely unrealistic ridiculousness and 100% real-world setting where no fantastical elements exists. I just fall on the part of the spectrum where I think many elements in certain comics have gotten ridiculous overtime and we need to pull back a bit and try to ground these ridiculous characters in our actual world.

Sorry for going on so long, just trying to explain a sometimes complicated position.
KeithM - 12/18/2012, 2:43 PM
@MutantEquality: "-istic" pertains to something that is akin to or characteristic of whatever the istic part refers to. Therefore "realistic" means something that is akin to or characteristic of something real, but - and this is key - not necessarily real itself.

In other words, a dream can be 'realistic', a drawing can be, or, in fact, pretty much anything that isn't actually real (real things aren't realistic - that's redundant - they're real, not characteristic of something real). Although a film, by its very nature, is not real, so the lines blur a little depending on the level of artifice involved.

In relation to fantastical things, like superheroes or superpowers, it means that they behave in realistic ways (they have a realistic effect on their environment, they obey the laws of physics, or have 'realistic' sciency explanations for why they don't - see Star Trek, which is full of 'realistic' explanations for things that don't actually exist, along with a few things that aren't realistic at all, like most aliens looking like humans with bumps on their heads).

For example, to make Ant-Man realistic all you need to do is (i) explain how he shrinks in sciency physical terms, preferably not complete nonsense (ii) ensure you account for things like preservations of mass and energy.

In filmic terms they often also mean in terms of how the character and world around them react to each other - Superman being a political being just by existing, governments being concerned about him, people being afraid of these walking gods, etc. All these are how the world would 'realistically' react, rather than just accepting everything without a murmur, without having any appreciable effect on the world as we know it in any significant way, as is often depicted in 'unrealistic' stories.

You can have both in the same film too, btw - you can have some parts treated very realistically and then have other parts completely throw those rules out the window (e.g Terry Gilliam has made a career over the clash between reality and fantasy, with some of his films being very gritty and ultra-realistic in parts and being completely out-there bonkers in others). That balancing and mixing of tone is probably quite difficult to do successfully though I imagine.

In Superman's case, to make his flying 'realistic' you need to factor in wind-resistance, inertia, increased kinetic mass at high velocity, the effect of gravity (and perhaps some explanation of how he defies it), and so on, rather than simply ignoring these types of things.

It is not a contradiction to treat something inherently unrealistic (like flying men, super-powers, dragons, or magic, etc.) realistically. It just means treating them as if they WERE real.

Hope that helps.
TnTflash - 12/18/2012, 2:53 PM
i'm more excited to see him come up with some original villains that aren't just ridiculous.
Jollem - 12/18/2012, 3:03 PM
@KamenRiderJ22 & 113 - i dig it :)
KeithM - 12/18/2012, 3:13 PM
btw - realistic works both ways too - you can have a film which contains nothing fantastical whatsoever, contain all real (even non-actor) people, and even portray actual events and still be completely unrealistic. Even a straight up documentary can be unrealistic if the artifice or manipulation of reality is such that what is shown is not, in fact, characteristic of the reality.
