Edgar Wright Talks ANT-MAN And Marvel Studios; "It’s A Big Effects Movie"

Talking to IGN Movies, Edgar Wright has talked more about his plans for Marvel Studios' Ant-Man. The project has seemingly been in development hell for years, but last year's San Diego Comic-Con finally saw the adaptation confirmed for a 2015 release. Not too long after, it was revealed that the pint-sized superhero will hit the big screen on November 6th that year. Below are a selection of quotes from the Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World helmer about the movie, including his thoughts on the visual effects and working with Kevin Feige. To read Wright's thoughts on his favourite Marvel Studios movie, be sure to click on the link at the bottom of the page for more!

"It’s a way of doing a superhero film within another genre. I wanted to tell an origin tale in a slightly different way. It’s part of the Marvel cinematic universe, but it also feels like its own piece."

"I’ve been collaborating with [Marvel boss] Kevin [Feige] during the whole of that cycle. I think people have always assumed… ‘Oh why is it taking so long to make?’ Part of it is because I wanted to make two other movies first. I wanted to make World’s End… me and Simon were very keen to make it and it felt like it was unfinished business and we wanted to wrap up the trilogy. The script came together really fast. Well not really fast, but it came together at a certain point where it was like ‘I really want to do this next.’"

"But to be honest, the later I do it, it feels like I could learn more, especially about special effects. It’s a big effects movie, so I’m pleased to go into it having done Scott Pilgrim and The World’s End because you’re always learning more about that side."

"I hope that at some point we’ll be able to show that at some venue all finished. Because obviously at Comic-Con we showed it unfinished. All done it looks really good."

superotherside - 2/6/2013, 9:22 AM
Glad he's at least pleased with Avengers. Perhaps he won't mind Ant-Man crossing over at some point.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/6/2013, 9:28 AM
I agree Edgar Wright,I agree. It's good to hear him talk more about this movie.I wonder if they will start casting for Ant-Man by the end of this year. This could be Marvel's next Iron Man.
Mystery - 2/6/2013, 9:30 AM
I would love to see that footage
JatevinM - 2/6/2013, 9:37 AM
I still just honestly have no faith in this character having a solo movie. The general audience is going to take him as a joke based off of his powers and the name of the movie alone. I believe that he should have been used in another characters movie rather than have his own film.
DrDoom - 2/6/2013, 9:45 AM
I still have a feeling this is going to be a disaster, regardless of Wright's brilliance.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/6/2013, 9:46 AM
"It's A Big Effects Movie"

That is very good news.I can't wait.
SotoJuiceMan - 2/6/2013, 9:46 AM
Gee whats the next Marvel movie?

IT'S PART OF THE CINEMATIC UNIVERSE BUT IT'S PRETTY MUCH ITS OWN THING

-_-....
Knightrider - 2/6/2013, 9:48 AM
Marvel's "2nd Tier" characters seem to be taking a while to get off the ground. This might be perhaps Iron Man, Cap, Thor and Hulk are already established, but there just appears to be more energy behind those projects.

I do wonder how it works in terms of Avengers 2, does Joss write a script and say: "Hey I have written Avengers 2, it includes Ms. Marvel, so you we need her solo movie before, of which I need these elements included"

Or is it Fiege pushing the movies through and Joss has to work with what is produced, personally I would prefer the Joss option, however be interesting.
Haven - 2/6/2013, 9:48 AM
I hope he fully utilize's Pym's strengths in that not only can he shrink, he can grow to Giant Man as well. Showcase both and highlight Pym's intelligence and I'm pleased.

It wouldn't hurt to introduce Jan/Wasp either.

At the end of the movie, the obvious stinger should be Pym creating Ultron to set him up as the Avengers 3 villain.
Mercwitham0uth - 2/6/2013, 9:48 AM
To the guyswanting to see the test footage, this is as close as you'll probably get to seeing it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGJ0tMAxbkk

It's a storyboard slideshow from a member of the audience that got to see it.

Hope this movie turns out good though. This is the one MCU film that has me worried.

Also, hopefully I can find the Marvel Premiere #47 (1st app of Scott Lang as Ant-Man) at this years Vancouver comicon.
rockerdude22 - 2/6/2013, 9:49 AM
I'm sure we're going to get some awesome visuals in this film. I think we may be in for a very nice surprise come November 2015!
Ocelot - 2/6/2013, 9:52 AM
@JatevinM dont see how "Ant-Man" is any sillier than "Spider-Man" or even "Bat-Man" regarding his powers size changing is actually cool and will look very good on screen and is refreshing from the usual superstrength, superspeed, flight powers
Moakynubs - 2/6/2013, 9:54 AM
It's funny how we all hate crossover after crossover with every other book tying in, yet hate it when the movies DON'T do that. What's wrong with making a stand alone film? Is a stand alone issue that isn't tied in to AvX not good enough for you either? :P
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/6/2013, 9:54 AM
@AcidicHeart I think this movie will be good.I want to know who the villain or villains are.I hope AIM is a part of this movie too.I know the rumor is Radioactive Man will be the villain in this movie.
teabag - 2/6/2013, 9:54 AM
Anyone seen Nomis?

:P
JatevinM - 2/6/2013, 9:56 AM
Ant-man is way sillier than either of those characters. You cant even compare him to either of them.
Reverend - 2/6/2013, 9:57 AM
@Haven

Though I think that would be a damn cool Avengers 3 story, I think they're setting up World War Hulk for Phase 3.

I cannot wait. Been waiting years for this. Ant-Man is one of my favorite comic characters. Scott Lang especially. Love to hear anything from Wright on this movie. CANNOT WAIT. I agree, could be Marvel's next Iron Man. And yes, one of those rare circumstances that the character/powers are MEANT for the big screen. Totally pumped. Would love to see the finished footage. Been wondering just how it will look. Love it. Can't wait.
teabag - 2/6/2013, 9:58 AM
Nothing wrong with Ant-Man..infact there have been more movies over the decades about shrinking or growing then people think

its a fun idea for the public and captures their imagination

I can see some excellent set pieces coming our way :)
TheLokey1 - 2/6/2013, 9:59 AM
I hope the movie focuses on Pym being ant man and using his super small stature to become a super spy. Hopefully at the end of the movie he will figure out how to reverse the process and become giant man, thus setting him up for a future as a super hero.
Reverend - 2/6/2013, 9:59 AM
^^ Though, the link I posted can be categorized as speculation, your guess is as good as mine.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/6/2013, 10:01 AM
Ant-Man's powers alone will look great and cool onscreen.I hope that he will be able to grow to a larger size too in the movie. And,Hank and Jan need to be the stars of this movie.Ultron also needs to be either a work in progress or fully funtional in this too.
KilledHal9000 - 2/6/2013, 10:03 AM
I wonder if the Ant-Man movie will have Scott Lang or Hank Pym. Big fan of both, but especially Lang. I know the rumors before had both characters in the script... but now?
Gary8264 - 2/6/2013, 10:05 AM
I always liked Pym better as Yellow Jacket
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/6/2013, 10:07 AM
I know this is off topic but, would anybody else like to see Grim Reaper in a Marvel Studios movie as a villain.I would like to see him or and Baron Von Strucker in some of Marvel's movies.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/6/2013, 10:08 AM
TROLL ALERT!!!!!!!!
Ocelot - 2/6/2013, 10:10 AM
@JatevinM I was talking about the names of the characters, not the characters themselves. You said people wont go to watch the movie because the name "Ant-Man" is silly but it's no less sillier than "Bat-Man" or "Spider-Man"
SpideyQuad - 2/6/2013, 10:11 AM
I can see how you would think this movie might end in as disaster. After all "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" was a major flop right?

Oh yeah, that only spawned the trilogy. I can see your logic now, but it is flawed. You must be assuming this is a DC movie from Warner Bros. if that's the case that I can understand your pessimism.

Trust me, this will turn out mighty fine. After all it's coming from the house of ideas! They'd definitely taken their time with it and they have an excellent director.
DrDoom - 2/6/2013, 10:11 AM
If they're going to make this movie, they'll need to make sure of some things:

1) Only one Ant-Man. Anymore will get confusing for the audience.
2) Only one moniker. Ant-Man should not change his name to Giant-Man or Goliath or any other even more stupid name, because that will also get confusing.
3) Focus on Pym's scientific applications. It will take the audience's mind off of Ant-Man's inherent silliness.
4) Use Wasp as the person who keeps Pym's sanity in check.
5) Radioactive Man and AIM as villains, with the threat of Ultron lurking in the background.
AINTNOTHINTOFOCWIT - 2/6/2013, 10:11 AM
sounds shitty
teabag - 2/6/2013, 10:12 AM
Nomis@ lol Well clearly im taking a photo of Gusto riding the Mrs :)
TheAbomination - 2/6/2013, 10:13 AM
Been waiting for this one since it was announced several years ago!!
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/6/2013, 10:13 AM
The way jCameron trolls around this website I don't ever want to hear anyone say anything bad about Grif again!
Haven - 2/6/2013, 10:15 AM
Reverend - Yeah, I read about that. As much as I'm amazed by that prospect, I hope they don't for numerous reason. Planet Hulk, sure 100%, but WWH creates more issues than anything.

MARVELPSYCHO79 - After seeing how they handled Reaper in A:EMH, 100% yes. If they cane make him close to that I'm all for it. He'd be a good villain for S.H.I.E.L.D.
teabag - 2/6/2013, 10:15 AM
Nomis@ That's why im always trying to palm her off :P
gambgel - 2/6/2013, 10:17 AM
anticipating this movie since last year.
hopefully we get first casting news at the end of this year or so
CharlesTheIncredible - 2/6/2013, 10:19 AM
Good to hear. I think it will be a good film tho Im still worried it might not be a box office hit.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/6/2013, 10:19 AM
@AcidicHeart They do need to focus just on Hank,Janet, his scientific abillities.Like I said before this movie has potential to be another Iron Man(2008).Plus,I hope the after credits scene gives a glimpse of Ultron turning evil.
TMW1987 - 2/6/2013, 10:21 AM
Hopefully this spawns off a shit load of Ant-Man films if it's a success.

Could be a franchise that goes on for years because you could do Ant-Man films around Pym, Lang & O'Grady.

Also, it wouldn't be that confusing to audiences to explain him using the Giant Man / Goliath names if you take the time & care to make people understand what they are seeing, I'm sure it can be done in a way that explains it clearly to both sophisticated & stupid / short attention spanned people alike.
KaneRomita - 2/6/2013, 10:22 AM
Alan Tudyk for Hank Pym.!
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/6/2013, 10:22 AM
@KamenRider Who said Janet won't be in Iron Man 3?I think she will be in it.I think the rumor is true.
comicb00kguy - 2/6/2013, 10:24 AM
A "big effects" movie? This doesn't bode well. This translates as "yet another movie with all this fancy expensive CGI stuff taking the place of a good story and strong characters". Add lots of big explosions and some computer-assisted stunts, and you have a movie. Meh. I still think Ant Man is more of an ensemble character than someone who can carry a movie by himself.
PapaMidnight - 2/6/2013, 10:24 AM
@teabag, huahauahuhaauhau
my coffee is all over the place now!
Only one man can beat Lionel and his name is Jon Secada.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/6/2013, 10:24 AM
@Haven I think they did a great job with Grim Reaper and Baron Von Strucker on that cartoon.I would love to see them kicking ass on the big screen.
teabag - 2/6/2013, 10:27 AM
Papa@ Well iiiiiiiiiiiiiii.....IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII didn't waaant to say it :P

Nomis@ All I can see is a little black box with something white in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
SpideyQuad - 2/6/2013, 10:28 AM
Antman In the comics has never been handled "silly" with maybe the exception of the last run. Try picking up a few back issues and then make an opinion.

Personally I picked up the Scott Lang issues when they came out and I love them, but I always loved the character.
unknownfacts - 2/6/2013, 10:28 AM
The only way to tell if it's going to be good or not is seeing the finished product.
HAILHYDRA - 2/6/2013, 10:32 AM
Even if this isn't your favorite Marvel character this is exciting. Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy is Marvel Studios flexing their muscles. These movies represent hope to all comic book fans that one day their favorite lesser known heroes may receive high dollar big screen production. If these movies succeed who knows what movies will come next? Black Panther, Heroes for Hire, Inhumans, and we already know a Dr. Strange movie is coming. It's an exciting time to be a comic book fan.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 2/6/2013, 10:33 AM
@Kamen I too can't wait to see Tony and Hank together onscreen. Two very different personalities going at it.I hope Hank and Jan are both in The Avengers 2.
