Bryan Singer Talks X-MEN 3 And X-MEN: DOFP; "Ellen Page Was Something I Liked..."

X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer talks more about how he felt after seeing X-Men: The Last Stand and reiterates his plans to fix a few things (as well as revealing that he liked Ellen Page enough to bring her back for this movie). He also talks about humour in the "inbetweenquel".

We've heard a lot from Bryan Singer about his plans for X-Men: Days of Future Past while he's been doing the rounds promoting Jack the Giant Slayer, but Bleeding Cool managed to get more out of the director in regards to his feelings about Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand and what the upcoming "inbetweenquel" will do to fix some of the more controversial decisions that were made in that movie. Singer also tells a pretty interesting tale about how he ended up seeing the follow-up to his two X-Men instalments, while also reiterating his plans to fix a few things in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Hopefully that will include bringing back James Marsden as Cyclops...

X-Men 3 was a strange situation for me. I didn’t have anything to do with X-Men 3 or Wolverine except for the actor. I don’t think Brett [Ratner] knows this but I was so emotionally charged up about seeing X-Men 3 that someone who wasn’t supposed to took me into a building in the middle of the night and showed me it long before it was finished, on a computer, just so I could see it, understand what it is and not be freaked out when I went to the theatre to go see it.

[Eventually] I went to the Chinese theatre because I wanted to see it in a big theatre and they let me in, I had a baseball cap on, I hid in the back but suddenly, Brett Ratner shows up. He was like “Bryan!” and suddenly the audience [all see me] and Brett Ratner talking and I’m stood there sipping my soda out of a Superman cup.

There are parts of X-Men 3… it isn’t what I would have done, but parts of it, I liked. Ellen Page was something I liked in X-Men 3 and I’m bringing her to Days of Future Past. Certain things are different. There was a lot going on in it and I wasn’t so happy with so many people dying, but then there were some really sweet moments with that kid, the cure kid.

I said I’ll “fix a few things” [with Days of Future Past]. It won’t be its primary function but there will be some fixing. It’s a really cool story, and incidentally, it facilitates all of these characters. They weren’t just thrown in there. And they all play a fun role. I want there to be some humour and some fun. In Days of Future Past there are some genuinely things in it. I can’t wait, and I know they will be fun to shoot. I want to keep that humour [because] the thing about X-Men is that the themes are serious, but the film doesn’t need to be…

ellen page one of the highlights of x-men the last stand.
manymade1 - 3/17/2013, 5:05 PM
@ marvel72

And that was a film with very few highlights at that.

I hope she has a bigger role in DOFP seeing as she's central in the comic.
Spideyguy94 - 3/17/2013, 5:11 PM
I agree with marvel72, Ellen page was great as kitty pryde, and hopefully she will have a big part in DOFP
marvel72 - 3/17/2013, 5:11 PM
@ manymade1

i'm trying to think of some more, very difficult........

-ellen page as kitty pryde
-kelsey grammar as beast
-danger room
-angel looked good flying about
-bit more colossus action
-magneto mutant prison break convoy scene

that's about it
dezdigi - 3/17/2013, 5:12 PM
How long are we going to use "inbetweenquel"?
thewonderer - 3/17/2013, 5:21 PM
Bryan Singer makes best X-Men films: X-Men, X-2, X-Men First Class (heavily involved in)

People here still attribute him to the shittyness of Wolverine and X3.

DOFP is in good hands with Singer.

Crossbones - 3/17/2013, 5:22 PM
Am I the only one who thinks after Days of Future Past that Bryan Singer should reboot or remake X3 and gives us what he had in his head for it?
ATrueHero1987 - 3/17/2013, 5:22 PM
I guess we will see if things will be "fixed". I hope one day they get Cyclops right on the big screen one day. Cyclops has a lot of story and ties into other characters of the X Universe(Mr. Sinister, Cable, and etc.)
DukeAcureds - 3/17/2013, 5:24 PM
I like how he was sipping out of a Superman soda cup. That tickled me. He does kinda bear a little blame for Cyke dying, though, by hogging Marsden for Superman Returns, but whatever.
I am loving all the announcements about this film. Every. Single. One. Especially the Ellen Page as Kitty and the inclusion of Blink and perhaps even Apocalypse. I'm glad to hear that they will serve a purpose. Blink has obvious roots in the whole post-apocalyptic reality thing, so it wouldn't make sense to choose her for this film and then just have her be a random character.
Hoping to hear news on other alternate future/reality characters like Cable and Bishop.
But just because the core cast members will be used properly, and not just thrown in there willy-nilly, I hope this doesn't mean we won't get a shitload of Easter Eggs detailing the background.
Singer has already proven himself an EasterBunny (master of the Easter Egg art) with X2. There was even a Blink Easter Egg in there, all those years back.
sephiroth211 - 3/17/2013, 5:25 PM
The cure kid?! You mean Leech who they f@cked up?

It's sad this director knows nothing about the source. How long have you been working in the world of X-Men, yet you use terms like "cure kid" to describe a character that has an established name?
thorhulk77 - 3/17/2013, 5:25 PM
I liked Ellen Page too.
ricko8687 - 3/17/2013, 5:26 PM
With so many characters in this movie, is it going to be a two parter
ATrueHero1987 - 3/17/2013, 5:29 PM
If Singer directed X3, he would've wanted Sigourney Weaver to play Emma Frost, so....
genesis609 - 3/17/2013, 5:29 PM
Just give them there jim lee costunes damnit lol
pud333 - 3/17/2013, 5:32 PM
There are so many mutants in this thing, I highly doubt most will have any significance in the movie except to clog it. I am imagining that scene from the Simpsons when the doctor is explaining to Mr. Burns how all the germs are all trying to get in through the door at once, and getting stuck in the doorway.
Superguy15 - 3/17/2013, 5:33 PM
Does that mean Leech will be in DOFP?
MisterNiceGuy - 3/17/2013, 5:38 PM
[frick] this shit bring on the reboot already. And no, going back and time and creating alternate realities does not count. That goes for the wolverine too
BboiBlack - 3/17/2013, 5:38 PM
Zack Snyder should write this same story about SUPERMAN RETURNS.
sikwon - 3/17/2013, 5:40 PM
Days of Futures Past is pretty much ALL about kitty and Logan. Hes going to take the very basic story and change the vast majority of it. Really i hate Singer. Hes made one good movie and a few decent ones. I hope like hell this (and wolverine) are good movies but i have no expectations at all.
StormLoganSummers - 3/17/2013, 5:41 PM
Yup. Cyclops is coming back!

gambgel - 3/17/2013, 5:42 PM
I feel its a bit weird that Singer hasnt mentioned Kelsey Grammer's Beast yet. He was a perfect choice, but for some reason Singer has only mentioned Ellen.

In any case, Im really interested to see what he does with Kitty this time, the same with Colossus and Rogue and Iceman. The action this time will be fun, to say the least
Ocelot - 3/17/2013, 5:47 PM
@marvel72 ahem, the golden gate bridge scene with magneto and the brotherhood was a good scene, "charles always wanted to build bridges" that line during the scene always cracks me up
xinstituto - 3/17/2013, 5:49 PM
Sometimes I think Bryan will erease X3.. in the first scene (at danger room) the time travel happens and then... X3 happens again with dark phoenix and the cure but with Bryan's point of vew
xinstituto - 3/17/2013, 5:50 PM
Sometimes I think Bryan will erease X3.. in the first scene (at danger room) the time travel happens and then... X3 happens again with dark phoenix and the cure but with Bryan's point of vew.. anyway.. maybe not
gambgel - 3/17/2013, 5:51 PM
the dialogue on X3 was horrible. And I'll always hate how that movie had a running time of just 1:45 minutes!

what a stupid decision, Ratner, soo stupid. The third part of an ensemble franchise and he made one of the shortest movies of the genre. Thanks so much
CherryBomb - 3/17/2013, 5:52 PM
I did love Kitty in X3.
I thought Ellen Page captured the playful, but also caring side of Kitty, I'm so glad she's back.
SlaveMasterFlexXx - 3/17/2013, 5:52 PM
Kelsey Grammar was the best part of X3 too bad well never see him again. Think it's a mistake they brought Singer back, at least Wolverine has a chance with new blood taking over. There's no point in Singer saying he's fixing shit unless its Cyclops being alive. Also Bishop??????
InfiniteMonkey - 3/17/2013, 5:52 PM
I'll wait till this bit comes out on HBO or someone rents it by accident.
The timeline and the introduction of characters are still wrong and not another movie will fix it.
I'm looking forward to a reboot.
Niktest - 3/17/2013, 5:52 PM
After DOFP it's AOA Now is a good time to be X-men fan
marvel72 - 3/17/2013, 5:53 PM
@ Ocelot

yeah i suppose you can add that scene as well.
DrRockso - 3/17/2013, 5:57 PM
Ben Foster
ricko8687 - 3/17/2013, 5:58 PM
Please Bryan give us action in this movie and not so much talk one thing Ratner did do was bring the action scences to life
Inhuman511 - 3/17/2013, 5:58 PM
They have to fix not only the last stand but origins as well. Those 2 movies [frick]ed up the continuity of the series.
Ceejay - 3/17/2013, 5:59 PM
@dezdigi - Tell me about it, "inbetweenquel" is right down there in the gutter retard invented words like "threequel" and also the over the top misuse of the word "Reboot".

We now how a generation of internet-slang-English failures who won't know how to use the words "Remake", "Sequel", "Trilogy" or "Bridge" let alone know the meaning of the word "Adaptation" or when to correctly apply any of them.
SlaveMasterFlexXx - 3/17/2013, 6:00 PM
It's pointless to reboot now everybody shoulda prayed for reboots after x3 & Spidey 3 that way the rights woulda gone back to Marvel just in time for the birth of the MCU. Adding them now would just cause confusion and stain the MCU.
ACira - 3/17/2013, 6:03 PM
@gambgel one of the shortest CBMs ever made, but it felt like one of the longest. Such a tedious movie.
n1ghtw1ng2832 - 3/17/2013, 6:04 PM
JUST BRING BACK JAMES MARSDEN AND MAKE CYCLOPS AWESOME!
ACira - 3/17/2013, 6:05 PM
@SlaveMasterFlexXx a reboot doesn't mean giving the franchises back to Marvel, it just means starting the movies again from scratch.
OtakuPapi - 3/17/2013, 6:07 PM
Ellen Page was a great Kitty Pryde maybe not a stick in the butt as people wanted to her be, but an awesome version of Kitty not to mention Ellen is a comic buff. She was epic in Super! And Kelsey was spot on as beast 100% accurate! Those are the most character faithful depictions in the entire X series!
OrgasmicPotatoe - 3/17/2013, 6:08 PM
@Beatnation No, the guy who revived the superhero genre after the turdfest that was Batman and Robin is talking about X-Men 3.

Ellen Page was also a good thing from X3. Not only character-wise, might I add ;)
SlaveMasterFlexXx - 3/17/2013, 6:09 PM
If anybody Singer is to blame of Cyclops dieing, he took him to supercrap returns so he was unavailable for X3. Not like it matters he made such a dooshy asswipe cyclops that was practically begging to be killed off in 3, had he lived he woulda whined about jean the whole movie anyways.
sephiroth211 - 3/17/2013, 6:20 PM
If they had developed Leech and the Morlocks as they should have we could have got some of this action.

Then once the Morlocks were established the fall of Angel could have been explored.

All in a perfect world that's what would have happened.
MrMartinMarvel - 3/17/2013, 6:22 PM
Really, who would have thought that Fraiser would make the perfect Beast?
BANEofExistence - 3/17/2013, 6:23 PM
Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde
KElsey Grammer as Beast
Eric Dane as Multiple Man
Colossus has a larger role
The Danger Room and Sentinel
Ben Foster as Angel

BAD

Everything else
ComicFan1134 - 3/17/2013, 6:37 PM
I Am Probably Alone In Thinking This, But, Whatever Happened To Being Surprised When Seeing A Movie?
Fastestmanalive - 3/17/2013, 6:38 PM
BRYAN SINGER, THE GUY WHO [frick]ED UP SUPERMAN MOVIES FOR ALL OF US!!!!!!!

But I do agree Ellen Page was great in X3.
EastcoastAvenger - 3/17/2013, 6:39 PM
When ever someone making a CBM says something like what Singer said about making a point to bring fun and laughter into it I get all scared we'll get Gene Hackman/Kevin Spacey Lex Luthor like camp.
I know it can be done well as the MCU has done a good job with it. But CBM's still have really just started getting permission from their studios to make them seriously.
Pooh - 3/17/2013, 6:41 PM
Maybe she is great as Kitty, but I just can't get past the hair-do. Looks nothing like the comics.
repulse93 - 3/17/2013, 7:15 PM
So far, things sound very promising with Days of Future Past.

Ironically enough, while I do feel it wasn't as good as X2 or First Class, I felt that The Last Stand was still an ok movie at least. Not great, but there is much, much worse out there. And The Last Stand was THE film that sparked my interest in comic books.
CoulsonLives - 3/17/2013, 7:23 PM
Ellen Page was a highlight!
Someone post a gif of her pwning Juggernaut!
