Talking more about how Agent Coulson's apparent death in Marvel's The Avengers will be addressed in S.H.I.E.L.D., Clark Gregg also comments on what it was about the show that convinced him to head to the small screen and shares his thoughts on possibly returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe too.

In an interview with Collider at WonderCon over the weekend, Clark Gregg has dropped a few more intriguing hints about how Marvel and ABC's S.H.I.E.L.D. will address his, you know, not being dead! While he doesn't reveal how the fan favourite character managed to survive being stabbed through the chest by Loki in Marvel's The Avengers, the actor does confirm that we should at least expect the Joss Whedon helmed pilot to give us a few clues. Gregg also shares his thoughts on his "death" in the superhero ensemble, why he decided to become a part of the TV series and whether this all means that we should expect to see him return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point. A full transcript of the interview can be found by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.

On Why He Decided To Return As 'Agent Coulson' On The Small Screen:

"I signed a multi-year deal for Agent Coulson when it was just three lines. It just turned into something more. It’s always a little nerve-wracking because it’s not something you’re used to. We have designed obsolescence, we actors. At the same time, the relationship between Agent Coulson and the fans is moving to me, and I don’t think it comes along very often, and I’ve been doing this a while. And some of this stuff is happening to me when I’m not in my 20s, not by a long shot. Once I knew that Joss and his brother Jed and Maurissa, his wife, were involved, and I saw the script, and thought, “This is what it’s going to be like,” then there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing."

On Whether The Pilot Will Reveal How He Survived Loki's Attack:

"After people see the show, they’ll have some clue as to why I’m still there, still breathing. But I don’t think they’ll know everything...

On How He Felt When He Learned Of The Death Of 'Agent Coulson':

"I’ve been so happy and living this geek fantasy as they kept adding Agent Coulson to everything including The Avengers and then gave him this magnificent, almost Shakespearean death scene, and I found out on that day how much I loved this guy and had come to identify with him partly because of the way fans responded to him, and also because he had such a great niche in those movies. He got to be funny, he got to be, in this case, heroic. And then I got to say good-bye to him, and it was a very emotional day. And yet I feel what Joss did with that was a fantastic conclusion of the character. And even though my friends at Marvel said, “You know, we spent a lot of time talking about how Coulson lives, and we know that there’s a movement out there, and there are t-shirts and people paint on bridges ‘Coulson Lives’, we’re going to bring you back”, and it’s one of the many things people tell you that never ever happens. And then I get this call from Joss saying, “Well…there’s a script. And here’s what we’re thinking, and it’s after The Avengers, and here’s the concept.” By the time Joss finished telling me, I was in."

On Whether This Means We'll See 'Agent Coulson' Back On The Big Screen:

"Joss is right over there. That’s a really good question. I want to go ask him. I don’t know. If my schedule doesn’t conflict, and they need him in one of the movies, will they come calling? My feeling is that there’s no breaks in continuity with this and the Marvel movie universe. It makes sense in that universe, and I certainly feel like his chances of appearing in those movies are far better than when he was far out dead."

I'm still holding out hope he's a sentient LMD on the show and that the real Coulson died.

Would be cool to have a few episodes with SHIELD in Wakanda. Also wanna see a Luke Cage and maybe even a Doctor Strange cameo.

It doesn't matter if he did get brought back to life or he is an LMD, bringing Coulson back is a dumb idea that cheapens his death in The Avengers.

I like Coulson and Gregg is awesome, but bringing that character back from the dead is one of THE most ridiculous things in cinema/tv history. We're talking Dallas "it was a dream all along" levels here.

I'm alright with them bringing him back for the tv show, I can understnd why(though they should have been kept dead) just as long as they dont bring him back for the films

I'm fine with them bringing him back. We never even saw him DIE in Avengers. Plus it would make the heroes distrust Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. in later sequels.

@Ror, "Bringing that character back from the dead is one of THE most ridiculous things in cinema/tv history."
You're joking right? They probably have access to extremely advanced medical tech (S.H.I.E.L.D.). And also people IN REAL LIFE have survive far worse injuries than being stabbed like that. Hell there are people in real life who survived being shot in the head or shot five times.

I liked the character and therefore want him back. I think bringing characters back to life shows a lack of planning on the studios part. However I love marvel and am very interested how they will say he lived. I also would welcome him back in the movies.

Before I declare how "dumb" or "ridiculous" it is that Coulson is returning, I'll wait to see just how they're bringing him back. If it's Norman Osborn-ish, it'll get a big thumbs down; if it's Bucky-ish, I can live with it. Most importantly, the SHIELD show has to be good!

Until we see the story told, its obviously too soon to say this is a dumb idea or not. I'm not particularly fond of the idea, but if whedon makes it work then great. Besides, we're talking MCU here, not late night tv soap opera rubbish.

Yes we did. We really did. Remember that part where he died? That was it.

He lost alot of blood. He stopped breathing. He stopped talking. His eye-lids stopped blinking. If that's not death, I don't know what is.

I think what is really upsetting some people about Coulson's "resurrection" is that it seems to have happened so soon. (Nowadays it's typical for dead characters in comics to come back within a year or two). But by the time S.H.I.E.L.D. airs, two more MCU movies will have come out, and another will be in marketing mode. That's plenty of a story progression buffer for the general audience to have become used to Coulson being dead, and to welcome his return.

"He lost alot of blood. He stopped breathing. He stopped talking. His eye-lids stopped blinking. If that's not death, I don't know what is."

Those are signs of clinical death, yes. However, that doesn't mean he was beyond resuscitation (particularly if SHIELD had some nifty medical tech as well as stuff that punches Lokis through walls).

And besides, it wasn't that much blood. You're not allowed to lose that much blood in a PG-13 movie.

Ror: That would be a shocker for the pilot. Scenes of Phils death and then CapAm wakes up screaming/crying only to se Phil standing besid the bed in a towel. "I had a terrible dream" "It is ok Cap, you are still my mint.." and then they hit the shower. "mmmmm.. minty fresh.." Fade to black.
