BOX OFFICE: EVIL DEAD Starts Off Strong; JURASSIC PARK 3D Set To Take Second Place

Early numbers are in for this weekend at the North American box office, and it sounds as if Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead will be frightening A LOT of people over the next few days! The 3D re-release of Jurassic Park meanwhile looks set for a so-so second place.

Deadline reports that Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead remake took $1.8 million last night for what studio execs are reportedly calling one of, "the best late show openings of the year" and "A great start for the film." This means that early estimates of a $20 million+ weekend are now looking to be closer to around the $30 million mark. Not bad at all for a movie with a budget of only $17 million. As for Jurassic Park 3D, that took $462,652 at late night showings, although this is nowhere near the $1.3 million earned by Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace last year. Steven Spielberg may have overseen the 3D conversion, but will that be enough to draw in moviegoers? It's thought that the re-release wil tale only between $15 million -$18 million for the weekend.

Will be viewing both films this weekend. The JPIMAX3D is because my wife and brother in law are huge JP fans and Evil Dead is cause my brother is a huge horror guy.

Both movies I'm excited to see. Evil Dead comes out in two weeks in Brazil, while the re-release of JP is only in August.

Saw Evil Dead. It. Was. Awesome! I hadn't seen a really good horror film in the theaters in a while, so I decided to treat myself to this today. By far the best decision I've made in a long time, and seeing it in theaters with a bunch of people is almost a test of endurance for some. I was fine with everything (gore), some in the theater weren't. The use of practical effects was put to amazing use in this film, confirming my belief in using practical effects for as long as you can and only use CGI for what you absolutely must or to embellish what is already a beautiful shot. Also, best horror film since Cabin in the Woods, even though the latter features a lot more dark humor. See Evil Dead, you'll thank me later.

HMMM....I WONDER WHERE G.I. JOE IS...CTHU!

I TOLD YOU IT WOULD DISAPPEAR THE FOLLOWING WEEKEND.

@Mori
Totally agree. LOVED it. It was so different yet it had everything that made Evil Dead 'Evil Dead' plus an awesome finally. Can't wait for the next one. Five Groovy Stars.

Hail to the King, Baby.
MementoMori - 4/5/2013, 8:15 PM
@jlocklin - Groovy. Ha! You caught that, I wondered how many people would.
flames809 - 4/5/2013, 8:20 PM
I got to see it!!!!1 And Cabin In The Woods sucked ass, bad horror movie. Felt more like a comedy than a horror film and it was just whack.
flames809 - 4/5/2013, 8:22 PM
and people haven't forgotten about g.i.joe people are still watching it.. only because is not mention this weekend don't mean people aren't watching it.
YoungThanos - 4/5/2013, 8:34 PM
^^^ A 60%-80% DECLINE IS STILL A FLOP!

AND JUST BECAUSE SOME DID SPEND THEIR MONEY AND TIME ON IT DIDN'T MEAN THAT THEY ALL LIKED IT.

HELL ONLY 57% OF THE GENERAL AUDIENCE ON ROTTENTOMATOES WHO DID WATCH THIS FILM SAID IT WAS DECENT. WHICH MEANS THAT 43% (WHICH IS ALMOST HALF) DID NOT!

SO JUST BE CLEAR GOING TO SEE FILM DOESN'T MEAN WIN IF ALMOST HALF THE PEOPLE WHO DID WATCH WISH THEY COULD GET THEIR TIME AND MONEY BACK...

JUST EXCEPT THAT YOU ENJOY MEDIOCRE CRAP. IT'S FINE WITH ME..BUT THE OVERALL NUMBERS STILL DON'T LIE.
flames809 - 4/5/2013, 9:43 PM
i mean i went to the movies and everyone in the theaters clapped when it ended for g.i.joe.... and nobody said anything about it flopping or not, because it didn't since its getting a third one. And really you think they want their money back? did they really said that? And dude its not crap, its a good film to watch.
