Deadline reports that Corey Stoll has signed up as lead character 'Dr. Ephraim Goodweather' in FX's upcoming pilot, The Strain. It's based on the vampire novel trilogy and Dark Horse comic book series written by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro. The latter will direct the pilot based on a script written by him and Hogan. TV veteran Carlton Cuse (Lost) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. According to the site, "The project already has a full writing staff in place churning out scripts, and I hear FX has committed $500,000 to creature creation." The Pacific Rim helmer will be spending a lot of time with small screen projects it seems as it was yesterday revealed that he's working on an adaptation of Japanese manga Monster. "To me, having the right lead for The Strain series was perhaps the most important creative task," del Toro told the site. "To be able to secure the perfect actor in Corey Stoll sets the project on the right track. To embody a character like Ephraim Goodweather – who transitions through every emotion and situation imaginable, and which anchors the narrative of the series – requires amazing talent and craft. Corey has both in spades as he has demonstrated it over and over again."

exe is sitting in front of a computer and instead of googling "The Strain" (great series by the way) he chooses to type
"who, or what the [frick] is this"

awesome.

Love the series.
I hope they can imbue this iteration of it with the same as The Walking Dead on AMC or anything close.

So keen.

Sounds kinda like the Ultraviolet film (in the sense of a viral outbreak = vampirism) - Can't wait, Corey is very talented :D

so does that mean the hulk series is on the back burner now?

When I read the first book, I don't know why, but I pictured the lead character very like to Aaron Eckhart.
xD

@JorlBola, I had that same thought in my head when reading the series. Also with how dark the series got, I wonder how much they will allow on tv?

Can't wait to see how this turns out. Loved the novels. Has anybody read the comics? Are they worth reading? David Lapham's usually pretty good.

LOVE these books!! Felt like a combo of Blade 2 (the camps are similar), Salems Lot and The Stand. When reading the books I always pictured Thomas Jane as Ephraim.

*vamps* [frick]ing smart phones.

I pictured Alexis Denisof from Buffy and Angel as Eph. Starts off as kind of a weiner, turns into a badass. Think it's too much to hope for Rosario Dawson as Nora?

Stoll might work. Somehow i saw Noah Wyle in the role but whatever.

I wish they could get Ian McKellen as Prof. Setrakian. He was always in my mind while reading the books. And the character even looks like him in the comic version.

Comic was cool too.

I JUST finished reading the novels. The first book is absolutely FANTASTIC. I haven't read the comic adaptation yet, tho Lapham is a helluva writer.

The ONLY person I could picture playing Setrakian is the one and only John Hurt, because no matter how you cut it, the character in the book is the SPITTING IMAGE of Prof. Broom.
RexDartEskimoSpy - 4/26/2013, 12:49 PM
I pictured "Professor Bruttenholm" John Hurt as Setrakian, too.

Y'know, John Hurt is sort of a more affordable Ian McKellan. Not that Hurt isn't a great actor in his own right.

If Abraham Benrubi doesn't play Fet, I'll be a very disappointed fanboy:
