BOX OFFICE: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Finally Crosses $100 Million In North America

It took three days longer than expected, but Star Trek Into Darkness has now passed $100 million domestically. However, with a Memorial Day weekend which includes the release of Fast & Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III, it won't hold on to #1 for much longer...

By Josh Wilding - 5/23/2013

Despite a 3D conversion, Star Trek Into Darkness took almost the exact same amount of time as 2009's Star Trek to surpass $100 million at the North American box office. It was originally thought that the sequel would surpass this number by last Sunday, especially as it opened early on Wednesday in IMAX screens. Regardless, the film took $5.33 million yesterday, which gives it a current domestic total of $103.77 million. This weekend will see both Fast & Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III hit screens across the country, although it's thought that the former will dominate with upwards of $85 million. As these films roll out internationally as well (Fast & Furious 6 had the second highest opening of 2013 in the UK last week), they will more than likely make a large dent in Star Trek Into Darkness' overseas takings, so a third instalment is from from guaranteed at this point despite a strong opening so far outside the US. Stay tuned for further updates.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

:( god damn it. To think people will actually go watch Hangover instead of this. Fast 6 is at least dumb fun.

Star Trek deserves more.
iam8bit - 5/23/2013, 10:55 AM
Oh, stop this already.

The film's doing good, why is everyone writing like it bombed? It missed expectations but is far from a failure, and will make good profits for the studio.

I'm pretty sure we'll see Star Trek 3.
MrMartinMarvel - 5/23/2013, 10:56 AM
Good! It deserves it.
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 5/23/2013, 11:01 AM
[frick]ing LOVED it. Period.

This is the second Star Trek film that I watched (first one was the '09 Star Trek) and by far my favorite. I think what really made my experience watching Star Trek Into Darkness was watching it with my old man. Seeing him enjoying the film and telling me how muh it brings back memories watching the Star Trek series as a kid really made it an amazing time watching STID. :)
tonytony - 5/23/2013, 11:02 AM
star trek has never done huge box office numbers. This will prob do between 200 and 250 domestic and another 300-400 internationallly. to make it the most succesful of the franchise and it would give it similar box office performance to IM1 and IM2. Stop spinning the result like its doing badly as that is good results
Scooby - 5/23/2013, 11:03 AM
JJ said the Millennium Falcon can beat the Enterprise in a dog fight . . . lol! That right there is the reason JJ should have nothing to do with Star Trek. [frick] off JJ.
gulducati - 5/23/2013, 11:09 AM
I think the studio feels that if ID does less than ST09, then a STIII will do less than this. Which is fine, just lower the budget a tad on the third picture. Some of the best TOS films were the ones with smaller budgets (STII, STVI).
ParisSun - 5/23/2013, 11:12 AM
Sorry tonytony but Star Trek will not perform better internationally. No one said it is doing badly but it has not met expectations. Stop being a blind fanboy. JJ has lost the heart of what makes Star Trek what it is. He has created a beautiful spectacle and one worth seeing multiple times but...

Star Trek works better in the hands of true science fiction writers and on the small screen.
stoptheworld - 5/23/2013, 11:16 AM
OMG I just came up with an awesome saying!
"Your movie is only ever as good as its villain".
Khan was underused in this movie! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Mike89 - 5/23/2013, 11:18 AM
Its such a shame that audiences prefer another worthless Hangover sequel over this. This movie deserves alot more.
Ill admit i liked Fast Five and ill soon check out Fast 6 but too many sequels is overkill for me.
xXkryptoniteXx - 5/23/2013, 11:19 AM
It lost its momentum with the four year wait. Let's face it a lot of people see star trek as boring and the first changed that, 4 years ago. It's really sad that this film is a financial flop in the eyes of paramount but this film was great, not as good as the first but it was a good follow up. I just hope that we get another one from JJ. I will also buy this one on release day.
xXkryptoniteXx - 5/23/2013, 11:30 AM
@scobby

Well he did make the best star trek movie in years and that's comparing it with the star trek next generation movies. I do like the wrath of khan, the undiscovered country, the voyage home, star trek first contact and insurrection. Those are my favorite films from star trek but what JJ did just made star trek cool to other audience. His just a fan of star wars more and he gaved all the star trek fans a great film.

Also he respected the franchise that he brought the best reboot without denying the past star trek films. No other reboot did what JJ did with his first star trek. Music, sound, characters, feel and drama.
Ocelot - 5/23/2013, 11:33 AM
Dont know why people seem to think that Star Trek is Star Wars, as I've said many times it never can and never will be. It will never be an 800 mil franchise. This is what happens when people let their expectations get out of hand.

Though on the contrary it probably would have opened better if it came out in 2011 or last year why they waited 4 years i'll never know. Also shouldn't have been wedged inbetween the likes of Iron Man 3, Fast 6 and The Hangover 3.

@Mike89

fast 6 is a very entertaining movie, better than all of the films except fast 5
tonytony - 5/23/2013, 11:33 AM
@parissun I disagree with you. The first star trek was a terrific interpretation of star trek on the big screen and made believers of lots of people.
To be honest this star trek felt a bit removed from that but its still a decent watch. and factually speaking I am confident at the end of its domestic run it will do 200- 250 mil domestic and 350-mil international. which would put it on par with the performance of the first two iron man movies.
tonytony - 5/23/2013, 11:34 AM
also the 4 year gap really hurt it. I think it should have been 2 years or 3 at most.
Tony93 - 5/23/2013, 11:35 AM
what world do we live in where IM3 makes more money that this awesome film... ;/
Tony93 - 5/23/2013, 11:36 AM
general audience arent that bright
st1s - 5/23/2013, 11:38 AM
COOOOIIIINNNNNN !!!!
xXkryptoniteXx - 5/23/2013, 11:46 AM
@tony

It's just what Jay Z. "Overrated or underpaid." it goes wit everything.
DrDoom - 5/23/2013, 11:47 AM
I'll go see it a few more times to help out.
Brainiac13 - 5/23/2013, 11:54 AM
Really good movie!!
Lizardking310 - 5/23/2013, 11:59 AM
I don't care how good this movie is I'm not a fan of Star Trek not running to the theater to see it. I'm staying away from the theater this weekend nothing good is out. Time to stay home and rewatch past seasons of game of thrones to hold me off until next weekend !
CaptainSpain - 5/23/2013, 12:02 PM
STID-MAXIMUM FAIL.

This is the true-STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS is a mindless movie and an EPIC FAIL...

ST 2OO9-Budget-140 millions+ 50 millions(Marketing)<190 millions.

Total final-258 millions in USA

STID-Budget-190 millions+ 100 in marketing.
Total final -according to BOXOFFICEMOJO and others-200 MILLIONS IN US.
Huge fail.
NEXT ABRAMS´s victim-STAR WARS.

TheOzmaofOz - 5/23/2013, 12:13 PM
Ahhh. The sad days when opening with 85 million is considered failure.

@CaptainSpain What are you so butthurt about again?
Sanderman - 5/23/2013, 12:31 PM
Maybe if they stop raising the freakin prices people will be more willing to see more movies! Ridiculous I had to pay $10 to see a regular movie (none of that god awful 3D or overpriced digital IMAX)
CaptainSpain - 5/23/2013, 12:34 PM
If you spend huge more, and you earn less IT´S A FAIl...
Greengo - 5/23/2013, 12:40 PM
Yeah.

If you were disappointed in this movie you might want to check your [frick]ing pulse.

InfiniteMonkey - 5/23/2013, 12:52 PM
This is what they get for waiting 4 years and in the end just copying and pasting from a former movie.

I had high hopes. I hope they make enough to at least warrant a third movie and this time, IT HAD BETTER NOT BE 4 YEARS LATER. 'Nuff Said.
Azazel1 - 5/23/2013, 12:53 PM
It is doing well overseas it will do at least as well if not better than the first...
Azazel1 - 5/23/2013, 12:55 PM
@infinitemonkey-Did you even see the film? It was definately not a cut and paste job, anything but..
Azazel1 - 5/23/2013, 12:57 PM
@Captainspain-Star Trek into Darkness

86% on Rotten Tomatoes yeah, huge fail-lmao

It has already made its budget the rest is profit now loser..,
Tevii - 5/23/2013, 12:58 PM
this movie is not a flop at all, not sure why people are responding like it is.

i do feel it deserves better. its a better film than Iron man 3 was.

The release date was off a little bit. no time to gain traction.
darkknightmare2012 - 5/23/2013, 1:01 PM
i saw star trek sunday ... i didnt really care for it ...the whole we need khans blood whenever there were allready other super soilders to get it from ... also it was obvious kirk was not going to stay dead thus proving it to be a pointless death anyways ... also i saw hangover 3 last night ... EPIC.
Gnyah123 - 5/23/2013, 1:07 PM

Gnyah123 - 5/23/2013, 1:11 PM
Why r ppl saying the 4 year gap hurt them??
All the batman movies were 4 years apart
BB was in 2005...tdk came in 2008 and TDKR 2012
Most sequels come out 4 years ...I'm sure we won't
Get a man of steel sequel Til 2017 the latest watch
marvel72 - 5/23/2013, 1:15 PM
star trek into darkness had a budget of $190,000,000 it has currently made $178,946,262,if it makes between $450-$500,000,000 that should be enough for a third movie.

fingers crossed it does,it could be one of the best trilogies.
Ryguy88 - 5/23/2013, 1:15 PM
I don't think CaptainSpain understands how profits work for movies.

Simple rule of thumb is that the movie needs to gross double its budget world wide to break even. If Star Trek can gross about $400M world wide it'll break even. If it makes $500M world wide it'll bring in a solid profit.
CaptainSpain - 5/23/2013, 1:20 PM
STID is a JOKE, a BAD TASTE JOKE. 3 plotters AND FOUR YEARS for making a mindless supermix of TOS´s space seed +STII+ST NEMESIS, typical Abrams product- COPYNG AND PASTING. Not original at all

ABRAMS turns the most intelligent sci fi show ever into GIJOE.

in ROTTEN TOMATOES a lot of critics are pure MARKETING, pal

THIS IS HOLLYWOOD.

seriously, 86% is a score for a masterpiece, not for a popcorn movie...
CaptainSpain - 5/23/2013, 1:32 PM
RYGUY,

STID 190 millions -budget + 100 millions marketing<290.

If STID earns 220 millions in USA, it means, - 70 millions in USA...and not including TAXES....

HUGE FAIL STID.
Facade - 5/23/2013, 1:37 PM
I still haven't seen IM3 or Star Trek. Maybe this weekend.
