Hugh Jackman Reveals That Bryan Singer BANNED Comic Books From The Set Of X-MEN

We already know that Bryan Singer failed to pay much attention to the source material during the making of X-Men, X-2 and Superman Returns, but check out what Hugh Jackman had to say to about him BANNING comic books on the set of the first movie after the jump.

ComicBook.com have posted an excerpt from Hugh Jackman's interview with EW about The Wolverine, and the Academy Award nominated actor revealed a very interesting story from back when he was first cast as Logan by Bryan Singer for X-Men. The director apparently banned comic books from the set of the movie as he didn't want the actors to be influenced by them instead of the script for the movie. That explains a lot. Regardless, the cast still managed to find a way around this as the comics secretly found their way around the set ("Through the trailer door would come comics," the actor recalled). It was in fact during the production of this movie that Jackman read Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's Wolverine series that the upcoming solo movie is based on.

On a related note, Singer has now removed the Tweet in which he seemingly made either a dig at Marvel or a simple reference (it depends on how you decide to read into it) to Quicksilver being an Avenger. Popular theories for this include Fox not wanting moviegoers to think that the two versions of the character will be related to one another or that Singer was given a dressing down for the negative backlash which followed his apparent swipe at Joss Whedon's plans for the speedster and his sister, the Scarlet Witch. You can see the original Tweet below.

Suddenly Nolan and Shane Black don't seem like such bad CBM directors.
PsyGuy - 5/24/2013, 6:25 AM
Ughhh I just want a reboot!
X1 and X2 were great, but lets let it die. The actors are turning 50 and the audience has moved on!
untipoconboina - 5/24/2013, 6:25 AM
Which totally makes sense in a comic book movie.
HavocPrime - 5/24/2013, 6:26 AM
As Kevin Smith once said when Tim Burton declared he has never read a comic book. "Well that explains Batman".

This whole Quicksilver thing is getting funny, wonder who will win out of the Fox or Mouse.
marvel72 - 5/24/2013, 6:28 AM
that's not a good sign, they should of at least read x-men days of future past.
wcwpoet - 5/24/2013, 6:30 AM
That explains a lot, I had high hopes for DOFP but thanks to Singer's dick move and his recent films fantasy films Jack The Giant Killer & Superman Returns. My hopes are diminishing, I'm seeing a ton of characters added with no rhyme or reason to it.
JoeMomma29 - 5/24/2013, 6:32 AM
LMAO!!!! I am glad Singer is in bed with FOX!!!! Those two deserve each other!
Earth69 - 5/24/2013, 6:32 AM
Im starting to think that X1 and X2 were just a fluke, and that this guy has no idea what he's doing.
JordanKing - 5/24/2013, 6:32 AM
This just gets better!
KingMarvel - 5/24/2013, 6:34 AM
Fox can have the 616 versions i wanna see the Ultimate QS and SW in the Avengers straight up!

SimpleObserverOfThings - 5/24/2013, 6:36 AM
@untipoconboina

I agree...perfect sense. Comic book movie. Who needs the source material, just wing it I say.
TheManFromMars - 5/24/2013, 6:36 AM
@KingMarvel

YAY FOR INCEST!

KrazyForKomix - 5/24/2013, 6:36 AM
Yup. Kind of like banning comic book uniform/costumes from the movies. Huh . . . sucks to be a comic book fan.
thewonderer - 5/24/2013, 6:37 AM
"..By July 1996, Singer had further turned down the film X-Men another two times, and finally accepted after reading the comics and watching the animated series.[5] The themes of prejudice in the comic resonated with Singer."

There is going to be a whole lot of misconception here.

Singer wrote the script based on the comics.

It can be confusing for an actor to have two different mediums to draw from.

But of course, let the hate continue.
dellamorte1872 - 5/24/2013, 6:38 AM
MARVEL already won as far as im concerned. SINGER is a douche i vowed to never see any movie of his after he revealed himself to be a turncoat and go direct shitty SUPERMAN RETURNS
calin88 - 5/24/2013, 6:38 AM
Raise the white flag Singer! Movie-making just isn't for you, 'cause you SUCK!!!
SimpleObserverOfThings - 5/24/2013, 6:39 AM
We all will just have to wait for Fox to lose the license to X-men and Marvel gets it back, then we'll see good renditions of the movie....

Hopefully before the sun explodes or the galaxy Andromeda collides with our milky way galaxy...would be nice.
kevberg - 5/24/2013, 6:39 AM
First of All, If you guys lok up reports from that time,...Singer spent a lot of time in th trailer puking his guts out because he was nervous making his first big budget film.

While I don't like hearing that the guy banned comics, he probably had a hard time trying to Find his voice on teh film and didnt want to be campy like Band R.

Second, Both X1 and X2 are excellent portrayals of most of the characters and FIRST CLASS took FAR more liberties with continuity. AT LEAST in Singers Scott and Jean are actually the First X-men. (BTW I liked FIRST CLASS for the most part)

Third-- JOSS WHEDON rewrote X1. ....just sayin. ( even wrote jokes about his own script in several tv shows)

Finally- Both Blade and X1 were catalyst for the modern era pf Superhero films...they took the material more seriously and saved the Genre from the damage that B atman and Robin did .

KingMarvel - 5/24/2013, 6:39 AM
@TheManFromMars LOL
Tempo - 5/24/2013, 6:41 AM
I hope someone will stop this guy.
RocknSntchRvlvr - 5/24/2013, 6:42 AM
Excuse me folks, but I'm about to wax eloquent. Bryan Singer is an absolute moron! Why would you rehire a director that has ruined the comic book genre? The first 20 minutes of X-men 2 was the only good part of the 3 main films. Granted, I loved X-men FC, but did he direct? Thank GOD NO! Hugh Jackman was a great find as Wolvie, but they numbed him down. And banning the very thing from the set that made this world possible, how dense and self sustaining can we be Bryan? The worst of it all was his foot stomping, petty little childish move against Marvel's success in sneaking in Quicksilver. Go to your place in film history as one of the worst directors of all time up there with Joel Schumaker's Batman Forever.

Keldor - 5/24/2013, 6:42 AM
I didnt like X1 or X2 much less x3. Singer sucks...I never like The Usual Suspects. I guessed it withint 20 mins of that film. Singer is just a piece of shit director in my opinion.
ATrueHero1987 - 5/24/2013, 6:43 AM
Really Singer?smh
xXkryptoniteXx - 5/24/2013, 6:43 AM
I think his doing this just to piss off his haters. I wanna see what he does with xmen again, I stood by him before and this will prove if he can do a great xmen like x2. His giant slayer sucked but his directing is pretty good, it's just the costume and the way it looks sucked in live action.

Bryan Singer is in the fine line of make it or break for the Xmen universe. First class was great and now let's see the follow up as well as his follow up from x2. Superman returns wasn't bad as everyone is talking about. I prefer his better than what superman ideas that WB had that time. Burton's superman lol.
MightyZeus - 5/24/2013, 6:43 AM
wow...just wow.
the more i hear of Singer the more i hate the man.

going to see this with low expectations cant wait to see what they do with 'Quicksilver'.

@Levi

I like Nolan. I'm sucking his dick. I like Singer. I'm sucking his dick. How about you stop with the vulgar insulting.

"The financial and critical success of X-Men persuaded 20th Century Fox to immediately commission a sequel. Starting in November 2000,[16] Bryan Singer researched various storylines (one of them being the Legacy Virus) of the X-Men comic book series, choosing God Loves, Man Kills as the premise.[17] Singer wanted to study, "the human perspective, the kind of blind rage that feeds into warmongering and terrorism,"[18] citing a need for a "human villain""

Yes, truly the sign of a comic hater, reading up on comics for the sequel.

Singer is to be credited for X2, which is the best one. Troll elsewhere.
CaptainAmerica31 - 5/24/2013, 6:48 AM
I never liked any of the X films but FC. I have a feeling people will be extremely suprised by how good or bad this movie is. On topic, I don't see why in the world you would ban comic books on set?
thewonderer - 5/24/2013, 6:49 AM
And you know its sad, when people are insulting the guys sexual preference.

What does that have to do with anything? Whedon kissed Gregg, call him gay.
kevberg - 5/24/2013, 6:49 AM
BTW, just so you can remember...Singer did Apt Pupil and Usual Suspects before X-men, so just because he SCREWED superman returns ( which i too revile) He Has talent even if some dont wanna admit it.

Look, He has to get away from limiting himself to those stupid black leather costumes, but The vibe of his X-men movies has been awesome.

Like in X1-- that scene between Charles and Eric in the hallway--- still sends chills by how awesome the mood is, Or The Scene between Rogue and Wolverine in the Truck....Or How about X2 ..How cool was it when when wolverine ran down the hall taking out the Soldiers and actually slashing one in the head? Or when we finally got to see Colossus?

So maybe Singer might fail, but as far as the X-men movies are, His have been successes so far.
Tainted87 - 5/24/2013, 6:50 AM
This bullshit with Quicksilver is exactly that, but I really don't think it's going to make that big of a difference with the Avengers sequel. Seriously DICK move by Singer though.

As for comics being banned, while the actual censorship is really stupid, you may recall Heath Ledger explaining how he didn't read the comics as he didn't want to be influenced by someone outside the movie.

It's basically creating a controlled environment for a test. It's not at all unheard of, but considering how off some of the characters turned out, I'd say it didn't work out for the best.

Another thing to consider is Halle Berry. She is actually a good actress, but the way she played Storm - it never worked. She was angry with Singer afterwards because of how small a part her character had - I think someone either read the comics or talked with people who had. Afterwards, it's really just playing the character AS IS in the movie series, and not changing things up (which would be unnatural) - in order to maintain that inconsistency. I guess what I'm saying is: she might have actually been able to play the character RIGHT from the start.
dellamorte1872 - 5/24/2013, 6:51 AM
he didnt read the story WELL @wonderer - why else would we have so many unnecessary chan on boycotting thidaracters. obviously SINGER didnt read the comics or did and just doesnt give a crap! either way i plan on boycotting this film and everyone SINGER ever does. he will never get my money
Tainted87 - 5/24/2013, 6:51 AM
kevberg, I think we can actually agree on something. Awesome.
BmanHall - 5/24/2013, 6:51 AM
I think I'm more surprised at the people who are surprised at this surprising news.
smulkhash - 5/24/2013, 6:53 AM
What a dick.
kevberg - 5/24/2013, 6:53 AM
Some of you need to get your facts straight.

X1 was done Right after Batman and Robin. talking 98-99 timeframe. Hollywood wouldnt take hardly any chances on Superhero movies.

Singer SAVED the genre .

get your history straight goddamn and take supermans d@ck out your mouths.

QuanZen - 5/24/2013, 6:53 AM
He didn't want you all to realize how much damage he's doing to these characters on film.
kevberg - 5/24/2013, 6:56 AM
@nomis...costumes aside, How is First Class any better?

BTW..Lets all keep in mind Singer didnt Direct X3..that was Ratner.
Tempo - 5/24/2013, 6:57 AM
The only X-Men movie good was FC the others are only tawdry shit.

kevberg - 5/24/2013, 6:59 AM
@tempo
